Alas, I shall miss this for once as I shall be in Greece - now there's even more reason for the rest of you to go! Usually a good day with some contrasting bands (DPN+1 and our own King Street Smith & his Blues Buddies among the best), and they seem quite happy for spoons, swanee whistles etc joining in (maybe even shaky eggs). Small pub, so get there early to grab a stool.

There's plenty going on - just need the folkies to turn up and enjoy.....

Hi Roger,
I was at the festival site, but not in the pub bits. I heard the skiffle went ok - but that the Clifton Arms was less busy than in other years.

The usual suspects were skiffling away in a very pleasant atmosphere.
It was in fact the only bit of Caversham that had any publicity in the Folk Clubs London side of Reading. Top marks to Frank and Dave for the organisation.

The bands were good. The Jam session was excellent, very succesful. Numbers of visitors were down generally throughout the Caversham Festival as a whole, compared with previous years.

All right, what's skiffling?

A late fifties revival of the early predominantly black American music
described variously as Jug Juke or Washboard music. The first major skiffle hit was Lonnie Donegan's Rock Island Line/John Henry. The music tends to be very guitar orientated, with Tea Chest or Bath Tub bass and Washboard for rhythm. The songs range from blues through jazz to folk songs. Most of Woody Guthrie's songs seem to be 'natural' for
skiffle treatment.

Thanks for the explanation, Leadfingers. It sounds like something I would enjoy hearing.
