Lyr Req: 'Moon, moon, beautiful moon...'

Subject: Lyr Req: Lyrics Moon, moon, beautiful
From: GUEST,Susan in Australia

Hi all
You guys have helped me here once before which was greatly appreciated.
My 80 year old Mum (bless her) is trying to remember the words to a song she sang as a child.
It's a tough one as all she can remember is the first line being;
"moon, moon, beautiful moon" and there is also something about children sleeping and the moon comes peeping!!
If anyone can remember this I would be extremely thrilled!!!!
Best regards,
Susan in OZ

No luck at all with Google. Sorry. Was your mum raised in Oz or elsewhere?

Well. I don't know if this is it or not, but there is a mention of this song:

When the Moon Comes Peeping Thru

Written by Sam Gold and sung by Happy Stanley. Haven't found sheet music yet at any of the usual sites.

If it's the same sog, I can rmember this much:

I'm such a silly when the moon comes out,
I never seemt to know wjat I'm about;
Hopping, popping[?], never never stopping;
I can't keep still, although I try!
[...] when the moonbeams shine,
[...]
[...]
When the moon comes peeping through the sky.

It's not a song I ever knew all the way through, so I'm not likely to remember the rest, I'm afraid. I hope this will prompt someone who does.

Steve

Thanks for your help so far but still no luck.
Yes my Mum was raised in Australia - but I don;t think it's a traditional Aussie song - I think it may have been a lullaby.
The first verse was definitely Moon, moon, beautiful moon.
Oh well - maybe I'll get lucky eventually.
Thanks all

Hi
I'd like to find this song, too. A friend of mind said his father (in Scotland) used to sing it to him. If anyone has a lead please contact me at lindazachri@hotmail.com

Hello, I remember singing this when I was a child of 5 at school in South Shields in North East England. This is all I remember:

Moon, moon, beautiful moon, rising, rising rising still
Over the shadowy valleys and hills (not sure of this line)
Creeping and peeping where children are sleeping
Moon, beautiful moon.

I would love to know more about the song.

All the best,

Jackie

From: Jim Dixon

Probably not the right song, but what the heck.

From the sheet music at The Archive of Popular Music at UCLA:

WHEN THE MOON COMES PEEPING O'ER THE HILL
Words, Bob Cole. Music, Rosamond Johnson.
New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co. 1902

1. The turtle doves a-cooing,
The gentle breeze a-blowing,
At the close of day;
The golden sun is sinking,
The shades of night a-falling,
Daylight steals away.
Just the time to love and spoon,
And so I gets my heart in tune,
'Cause my lady said she'd meet me,
At the risin' of the moon.

CHORUS: So Honey; I will be waitin',
When the moon comes a-peepin' o'er the hill.
Honey, I will be watchin',
At the old trystin' place by the mill,
Honey! I will be hopin'
And my poor heart with gladness you will fill,
Honey, If you will meet me,
When the moon comes a-peepin' o'er the hill.

2. If all the owls am hooting,
And all the bullfrogs grumbling,
Makin' night feel queer,
You must not let it scare you,
For I'll be there to meet you.
Honey, have no fear.
'Way off yonder far away,
A-shining jes' as bright as day,
Mister Moon will be a-watching,
Honey, jes' to light the way.

Hello - I got goose bumps reading this request as my nan who passed away on Thursday at 91yrs used to sing this to my sister and I as a child and we are trying to source it for her funeral. Did anyone have any luck with it? Fingers are crossed. If so, please let me know: daniellehouten@hotmail.com
Many thanks
Danielle

By the way, the song 'I'm such a silly when the moon comes out' is by Lionel Monckton from the musical play 'Our Miss Gibbs'.

The US Catalog of Copyright Entries lists:

MOON, MOON, BEAUTIFUL MOON
Words by O. Roaten, music by Lee Darnelle
New Albany, Miss: Olivia Roaten, ©1931.
Unpublished*

* I think that means it was not published as sheet music at the time the copyright was registered; it probably appeared first in another form, such as a recording or a movie soundtrack. Maybe sheet music was published later; maybe not.

I am looking for this one also.
The first line, to my knowledge is: "Shadows are falling and daylight is passed,
Beautiful evening is with us at last," -I cannot remember the next two lines, only the tune. The Chorus as I remember:
"Moon, moon,beautiful moon,
Rising, rising,rising still,
Over the City and over the hill
And creeping and peeping where children lie sleeping,
Moon, beautiful moon. I think there is another verse but cannot remember it. I sang it at a Methodist Sunday school anniversary about fourty-five years ago.

It may first have been known as Moonrise. I just tripped over the following which dates to 1928.

The link below will open to a newspaper page. To the immediate left of an advertisement entitled OPPORTUNITY (in bold letters) is a heading entitled Selected Verses.

The link is

Please note again that the link seems to be to an Australian paper.

MOONRISE

Shadows are falling and daylight is past;
Beautiful evening is with us at last;
All the wide heavens with silver are dressed;
Night winds are kissing the flowers to rest.

Forest leaves rustle in quivering light;
Sing, all ye nightingales, lo it is night;
Sing to our Father your praises on high--
Praise for His beautiful moon in the sky.

Moon, moon, beautiful moon!
Rising, rising, rising still
Over the city and field and hill,
And creeping, and peeping, where children are sleeping
Moon, beautiful moon.

(It was I think contributed--sent in--to the paper by someone named Theodora Wilson Wilson [sic] and published Monday, March 12, 1928 on page 10 of the Cairns Post [which was/is a town on Australia's north coast in Queensland].)

We sang this in the 1950's at my school. I cannot remember all the words but I do remember the tune and words of the chorus.

Moon, Moon, beautiful moon
Rising, rising, rising still,
Over valley, field and hill,
Keeking and peeking where children lie sleeping,
Moon, beautiful moon.

Wish I could find the rest of the words myself!

I remember this song from my junior school in Luton, Bedfordshire, in about 1957. We had 7 girls called Susan in our class (!) and one of these Susans used to sing this as a 'party-piece'. I remember only the words to the 'chorus' but I remember all the tune and could write this out quite easily.

I sang this at infants school In SE EnglandAnd I’m now 70. I thought it was beautiful and it still haunts me!
The 2 verses are above, in a previous post, and the Moon, moon beautiful moon is the chorus after each verse.
Beautiful melody.

It gives me goosebumps to find the lyrics to this song. My nan in Solihull, UK used rinsing it when my sis and I were little and now many many years later I sing it for my young girls. So moving that it’s so old and everyone who knows it has fond memories of it, and had older family members sing it to them

My variant chorus line is 'Over the city and fields and mountains,
And creeping... etc.
Also learned from grandma - though only the chorus. Fascinated to find more, thank you!.

Moon moon beautiful moon. Fill my bag soon soon soon. Say it 3 times while spinning and filling up. Plastic bag. Then make a wish and leave it under your pillow overnight. Kids love it

I'm also struggling to remember this beautiful song but I believe it goes like this.

Shadows are falling the day light has passed.
Beautiful evening is with us at last.
All the wide heaven with silver is dressed,
night winds are kissing the flowers to rest.
Moon, moon, beautiful moon.
Rising, rising, shining high.
Over the meadows and over the cities.
And weeping and peeping to see children sleeping.
Moon, beautiful moon.

I can remember singing it with my sister. Happy memories.
