Well Dr Johnson had something to say about the drum/melodeon controversy, something about it's difficult to decide precedence between a flea and a louse.

When all are there our Morris side can provide a Quartet of Bagpipes, Bodhran, Banjo and Piano Accordian. Jokes can be shared equally among all instruments.

I recall that someone once said that the only time the mute swan makes a sound is when its on its deathbed - pity the same can't be said for drums (and gatherings of more than one melodeon)and some singers

In what world can a banjoman not be in sympathy with drums and melodeons? They all contribute to the genre of heavy metal folk, a genre who's dulcent tones I have often enyoyed. Pity the poor mandolin and flute so often blasted out of the room by the Jimmy Henrix Experience of sessions.

Nobody ever listens to us. Spoonism is rife! We have made a subtle contribution to egaliterian music then along comes some classically trained bernard on the piano accordian blasting chords all over the place. Sometimes I feel like going electric with humbuggers om me sheffields and a couple of hundred watts of Marshall's best parked under my seat.

Bloody hell Jimmy, if you go down that road you'll need to change the spelling of your name to 'Jimi'!!

Good call Rich, I was trying to be too clever and got me Jimmies in a twist.

People will play with who the want too. Martin Carthy wih all that brass in Brass Monkey comes over well but needs amplification. Trombones are good but how many is too many in a session?

Wiggy, have you ever played a melodeon? Have you ever played keyboard of any kind?

The first thing to do (supposing you haven't done it already) is to locate a melodeon and try playing it before you buy. See if you like the feel, the approach, the way you hold it and the way you see (or can't see) what your fingers are doing.

Anyhow, if "drums aren't welcome" you could:

1. play better, which includes not being harsh or drowning others out

2. tell the elitist snobs to stuff it.

3. find a different, more sophisticated group to play with

My melodeon is currently up for sale! It is a D/G Castagnari Lilly - excellent condition but £595 so might be beyond what you want to spend. If not PM me (I'm in Yorkshire but could work something out if you are interested)
