When I first taught myself to play guitar as a medical student in the mid-70s, I bought Happy Traum's book, "Fingerpicking Styles for Guitar." Here are his notes on Tom Paley: "In the late '40's, when the urban folksong movement was just getting under way, a few young city people were deeply involved in studying the traditional instrumental styles of the country. Tom Paley became one of the best guitar and banjo pickers in the city, and was the inspiration of many many other aspiring folk musicians. "Tom played and sang, took photographs, and taught college math throughout the '50's, until he, John Cohen, and Mike Seeger joined forces to form the New Lost City Ramblers in 1958. He is now [in 1966] somewhere in Scandinavia with Claudia, his wife." Then I took a trip to London after my internship in 1978. I went to a pub whose name I don't recall, and after a couple of singers the MC announced, "Next, we have Tom Paley." He was wonderful...and I was amazed to be seeing a man who had apparently dropped out and was supposed to be living "somewhere in Scandinavia"! Aloha, Mark |

A few months ago Tom celebrated his 75th birthday and at a gig at the Cellar Upstairs a couple of days later (with Joe Locker and his son Ben who play together as the New Deal String Band) they calculated that their combined ages added up to 200! |

Yes a legend. I remember being with some music friends in Olympia, Washington State about 1973 and meeting with some old timey fans (Burt and Di Meyer IIRC) who were amazed that the legendary Tom Paley was such a regular part of my musical experiences in London. It was good to have the latest version of the New Deal String Band at our club recently, Tom with son Ben and Tom's long time musical companion Joe Locker. Marks 1978 pub could have been any number of possibilities (Enterprise, Chalk Farm, ring a bell Mark?). |

His very first fiddler in the New Deal String band was Robin Williamson (pre Incredible String Band) then, I think, Bobby Campbell. I'm sure Kevin will remember the great line-up in the early 70s in London with Janet Kerr on fiddle. |

Yes, Janet was great, and designed all those lovely early Leader/Trailer album sleeves. I used to get early proofs of the sleeves from Bill & Helen Leader and put them up around the walls of the Enterprise and take orders for the albums, used to brighten up the old place. Have we drifted here from the Les Cousins Thread? BTW being a newbie how do people get to quote from previous posts as I have above but show the text in Italics? I've searched for help and tried cutting and pasting from a word processor but it doesn't seem to work? |

I see he performed April 19--(i guess that was this year?) at the Cellar Upstairs Folk Club at Exmouth Arms, Starcross Street quote: Legendary octogenarian American singer, guitarist and banjo player who was a member of the old-time string band New Lost City Ramblers with Mike Seeger. He is now more commonly seen in the New Deal String Band, but here makes a welcome solo appearance. I am glad to say that we hosted Tom in a house concert here in Calif. a while back, and I want to sent hello wishes to him. If any BritCats see him, tell him Laurel says hi! And that i am playing those Svenka (Swedish) tunes on the nyckelharpa whenever i get the chance. |
