18 Jul 03 - 08:03 PM (#986335) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: John Routledge Thanks Guest Vince I am certain the "Open Door" will go from strength to strength in the new venue. Will be there in two weeks. |
19 Jul 03 - 06:03 AM (#986454) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Will be there tomorrow night! Looking forward to it. Diz |
19 Jul 03 - 09:55 AM (#986530) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Thanks for posting this, Vince.... We're actually aiming to start a wee bit earlier than 8:45 though it still gives hat time on the website...It's a great pub with a really nice room and close to Rochdale Canal...the 'Linnet' in the pub name is taken from one of the canal locks! The beer is J.W. Lees at its best - - well, it would be with the brewery just around the corner...and they serve Holstein for the lager drinkers....looking forward to seeing you all....... Love............Harry and Sara. |
19 Jul 03 - 10:00 AM (#986532) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Les the thread jumper Oddly, Chorlton Folk Club is still at the South West Manchester Cricket. Ellesmere Road, off Wilbraham Road, Chorlton on Thursday and sends fraternal greetings to the Open Door in the Railway & Linnet. What a name hey? |
19 Jul 03 - 11:15 AM (#986570) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Never one to miss an opportunity, Les ;o) It is about time you got yourself over to The Open Door and showed your face and aired your voice! You will be made very welcome indeed. Helen is also coming along tomorrow night--so the numbers are growing. Diz |
19 Jul 03 - 02:10 PM (#986628) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Les the thread jumper That's a very kind offer Diz but as I'm sure your aware we're not allowed out of Chorlton after dark until we've been clear of attempting Oldham Tinkers impersonations for three months. But not long to go now thee knows............. |
19 Jul 03 - 02:51 PM (#986653) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Oh, Les--and here's me thinking you thought the world was flat and you would fall off at the Chorlton/Withington Boundary! ;o) Diz |
20 Jul 03 - 02:46 AM (#986867) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Les the thread jumper Some of our people made it to the Friday Club on Shudehill, who's name escapes me, and had a really good time. Rumour has it that on a fine day the snow capped hills of Oldham can be seen from Shudehill and that even another counrty called Yorkshire exists, but we don't believe that. You lot seem so well organised with all your guests and extravaganzas. We would probably be a bit confused if more than 20 people were in a room and even more scarry - joining in! But, we should as they say 'get out more' |
20 Jul 03 - 04:38 AM (#986897) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,HelenJ Looking forward to seeing everybody this evening. The pub sounds ideal from the description given by Harry. Also thankyou for giving explanation of the name - it had me puzzled for a while. Glad to see the back of Urmston for a few hours courtesy of my friend and chauffeuse Yvonne aka Diz. BTW Les - I went to Chorlton on Friday to the Unicorn - what a place - wow! Well worth a visit. HelenJ. |
20 Jul 03 - 04:54 AM (#986903) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Les the confused thread jumper Yes, the Unicorn (vege food coop) is amazing. As a meat eater I find it very threatening, I feel people will out me for my foul ways so I run in, grab muslie and run it. But that's a bit of give away isn't it? Is that Folk Club still going in Urmston? I remember chatting to some people at Chester Festival about a million years ago who either ran or were involved with a club in Urmston. |
20 Jul 03 - 06:14 AM (#986917) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Les..you've made your point about Chorlton time and time again...this getting boring and repetitive and I suggest you start your own thread if you wish to blather on...basically...it just ain't funny anymore.... Love.....Harry. |
20 Jul 03 - 07:07 AM (#986932) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST Fare enough Harry. But it was a genuine request about Urmston and it has kept the Open Door thread going for a bit longer |
20 Jul 03 - 08:08 AM (#986945) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Harry, any idea why the lock is called The Linnet Lock? Do you think the area was once populated by Linnets?? If only--may bring my binoculars as well tonight and 'call' the birds :o) Diz |
20 Jul 03 - 08:13 AM (#986949) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne P.S Les, Harry is right--instead of jumping on the Open Door threads to plug your own club why don't you go along to The Open Door one night and then you can join the thread to tell everyone how wonderful it is/was? We could all then reciprocate when you open a thread of your own-- and Helen could come along and tell you all about Urmston! Diz |
20 Jul 03 - 09:24 AM (#986964) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Cheers, Yvonne....sorry if I sounded a bit sharp with Les but the 'thread jump' thing has got a bit out of hand. Apparently linnets do/did favour railway embankments for some mysterious reason (according to what I've been able to find on Google) and the old line ran close by (hence Middleton Junction) so you never know your luck! Harry :0) |
20 Jul 03 - 03:00 PM (#987103) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Les the thread jumper OK, I surrender. You know how it is you think it sounds funny when you punch the little grey shapes, then it pops up as a dull pain in the rear. Its 8pm as type and guess you are all sampling lemonade and tuning up. Any way Open Door, best of luck for tonight. |
21 Jul 03 - 05:10 AM (#987314) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: My guru always said Speaking of Extravaganzas. Will 5 be happening? Enjoy the new venue! Hil |
21 Jul 03 - 05:27 AM (#987317) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Just to report that the first night at the Railway & Linnet was a very enjoyable affair. Nice to meet Pauline and to hear her sing Claudy Banks with an unusual 'Walls of Troy' chorus. There were good contributions all round from lots of others. (And I won some beer in the raffle! although none of us earned a biscuit.) This should be a good venue - a nice bright and airy room with good acoustics. |
21 Jul 03 - 06:47 AM (#987347) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Nobody earned a caning either, Matthew :0) We're thrilled to bits with the new location and not a bad turnout last night considering Saddleworth festival was still going strong... Extravaganza 5 is certainly going ahead, Hil...and should be a lot more comfortable this time! Still not far away from the Travel Lodge and there's a nice pub round the corner which ( I think ) does B&B. Car parking space over the road with room for a camper van...tell Zany Mouse...We'll let you know more details about facilities as we find 'em...certainly a couple of good canal-side pub restaurants in easy striking distance! Thanks to everyone who turned up last night...the OD's taken a few body blows recently - - not least the sad passing of Brian Rathmill - - but hopefully we've turned the corner now! Love...........Harry and Sara. |
21 Jul 03 - 09:20 AM (#987436) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: My guru always said Excellent news Harry, thanks for the update - glad facilities more comfortable!!!! Luv to both & all at the Open Door, Hil |
21 Jul 03 - 11:59 AM (#987509) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Dave the Gnome I'll see if MudGuard, who is in the area then, fancies going next Sunday. Anyone know a Manchester club on a Saturday BTW - nearest I can seem to find at the mo is Stalybridge Station. Is the music session at the Jolly Angler still going on a Saturday? Cheers DtG |
21 Jul 03 - 12:10 PM (#987510) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Far as I know there's just the Buffet Bar, Dave..... Hope you can make it on Sunday. |
21 Jul 03 - 01:43 PM (#987565) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Last night was indeed an excellent night. Lovely to be in a room that has windows!!! and a clean one at that! The welcome was as warm as ever and the music spot on! I wish you all every success at your new venue and look forward to seeing you all very soon. Also looking forward to hearing Harry and Bernard on Ali's show tomorrow night! Diz |
21 Jul 03 - 01:57 PM (#987574) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST Fantastic night at the R and L. Must remember to book a late working day to follow in future - (who'd be a driving instructor?) As far as I know the Urmston Club has fizzled out - may be wrong of course - it was run by Martin Kavanagh but was more on the lines of a guitar club with 'country' singers. I used to sweat cobs trying to get folk to join in a trad chorus - they all sat staring like mutes - hadn't a clue about folk singing as such so I removed myself. The Open Door is wide open - come along - lovely songs and more important - lovely people. HelenJ. |
22 Jul 03 - 07:11 AM (#987993) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett It'll be great if you and Mudguard can make it on the Sunday, Dave... :0) |
22 Jul 03 - 03:51 PM (#988321) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,HelenJ Lovely to see Mudguard again. Last saw him at Llanstock. BTW - anyone have the words to 'King Knapperty'? Getting desperate re what to sing on a Wednesday night at the Railway (Heatley that is.) Have it on tape but it takes ages to listen/stop/write down words and so on. HelenJ. |
22 Jul 03 - 05:49 PM (#988392) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: 8_Pints Thanks Guest,Vince for advising us of the move. Can't make it for the next few weeks as we shall be joining our Celtic cousins in Brittany from Thursday. Good luck, Bernard, Harry and Pauline with new venue! We shall look forward to the next 'Extravaganza' and will try to visit you before then. Bob & Sue vG |

28 Jul 03 - 03:08 AM (#991778) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Mark Dowding Enjoyed my visit last night - great venue, great singers - the high vaulted ceiling adds that little bit of echo/reverb that enhances the songs, good beer, easy to get to off the M60(well I found it easy). I'd go more often but I go to the Wooden Horse folk club at Rainford on a Sunday - I'm a resident there so it's not the done thing to go wandering abroad too often! Thanks for making me feel welcome - I'll certainly come again sometime. Cheers Mark |
28 Jul 03 - 07:20 AM (#991858) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Dave the Gnome Great venue. Great crowd. Great beer. What more could I ask for. Apart from that I am not driving next time... Like Mark I am involved somewhere else on Sundays but I will certainly be back sometime:-) See you all then :D |
28 Jul 03 - 01:32 PM (#992083) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Glad you found it alright, Mark. Matthew and I got hopelessly lost and we had been last week!!!!! Doh. It was good to see you again and to hear your music. Also good to hear Dave sing again as well-- some great songs. The first time we met was about two years ago, Dave. At the time you asked if I ever sang anything cheerful---you may have noticed the answer is still 'no' ;o) It was a good night--really enjoyed it--even more so because I could have a drink by way of a change! I will be back very soon. See you then Yvonne |
28 Jul 03 - 03:08 PM (#992151) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Lovely to see (and hear) you all....and wasn't Mudguards rendition of 'Molly Malone' a treat? As always it was a pleasure to listen to you, Yvonne and Mark, Matthew and Dave (almost synoptic) were on cracking form. Thanks again for making the effort to come and hope to see you again brefore too long. I don't know if Susan and Marilyn who came along and sang last night ever look on Mudcat but well done ladies..lovely voices and material. Thanks everyone for a great night.... Love......Harry and Sara. |
29 Jul 03 - 04:14 AM (#992480) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: GUEST,Matthew Edwards Harry, your treatment of Albert Berry was a pleasure to listen to, and I liked your own Black Gang song as well. It was good to meet Mark and to see Dave again - I will try to visit the Junction and the White Lion before too long. It was a good night, and we were honoured to witness MudGuard's first public performance as well! There'll be no holding him back now! I think I might be able to find the place again next time, after our World Tour of Chadderton. |
29 Jul 03 - 07:40 AM (#992550) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Yvonne Harry, thanks for reminding me of Susan's and Marilyn's names--really lovely voices indeed--I think they may make the Extravaganza in October--but I hope they return before that to The Open Door. 30 Jul 03 - 02:22 PM (#993585) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Shame on me!! I forgot to mention Paul from Stockport...not forgetting Bernard for organizing us all... |
30 Jul 03 - 03:12 PM (#993635) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Bernard Thanks Harry - you're spared forty lashes of the cat! Though Pete from Stockport may not think so!! Hee hee!! The change of venue has certainly sparked new life into the club, and just in the nick of time... We have another month or so of singarounds until September 7th, when our guest is Geroff Higginbottom (as he was once notoriously mis-spelt!!). Singarounds are not purely for singers - we need an audience as well! Some of our regulars are not singers, but occasionally join in with choruses - even this is not compulsory! Pauline and John are the club organisers - Pauline sings, John does not. It is neither financially viable, nor good for our club's morale to try to stage a guest every week, as most of our regulars prefer to meet to enjoy a good sing in good company - be they listeners or contributors. Anyone got any views/comments which may help us? |
30 Jul 03 - 04:14 PM (#993674) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett At least I didn't say Mary from Stockport!!!! |

04 Aug 03 - 01:53 PM (#996577) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Harry Basnett Cracking night again last night with highlights ranging from Stanley Accrington's operatic piece about the great replica football shirt rip-off to Andy ( in a highly appropriate Lord of the Rings t-shirt)sitting rather elf-like on the back of his chair and singing some quite haunting songs of his own about trees, mountains and nice things in general! Lovely to see John and Ann from the Railway, Norman and Maureen and so many friendly faces.... Thanks to everybody for coming along...... |
11 Aug 03 - 10:52 AM (#1000246) Subject: RE: Change of Venue- Failsworth to Railway & Linnet From: Bernard Another good night...! The club is definitely benefitting from the change of venue - the average attendance figures have practically doubled for the four weeks we have been at the R&L compared with the previous few weeks at the Bull's Head. It is refreshing to see new faces, and the reappearance of friends who had 'fallen by the wayside'! So... if you're in the area, why not give us a look?! If you're in the Ashton U.L. area, we know of people who could use a lift... or share a taxi. |

Heard some strange music in France. They seem to have so much of so many things. I seem to remember Alan Stivel(?) and all that wonderful Breton music. Does anybody play any of it around Manchester? Seems like your club is steaming on so to speak. |
