20 Jul 03 - 01:12 PM (#987053) Subject: Tech: Paltalk From: kendall A few weeks ago, I tried to download Paltalk. Got stuck in a loop and tried to dump it. Went to add/remove programs, hit remove on paltalk and nothing happened. Now, every time I go on line, this message comes up, "If you click on OK, Paltalk will be removed from your computer" However, it is NOT removed, and that message is getting irritating. Any suggestions? |

You can delete the directory, but it is tricky getting ALL the little pieces out. If you go delete the directory it was in AND possible temporary files in C:/Windows, it at least will not bother you, but you will likely not be able to re-install it without serious help. It took a year and a total re-install of Windows before I could get it working after getting in one of those loops. I am NOT happy with the documentation PalTalk provides...nor with the clarity of the installation procedures. Contact Paltalk?..*grin*...good luck! |

If so, click on Start/Run, then type in msconfig into the dialog box. Click on OK to run the system configuration utility. When it loads, click on the Startup tab. You'll see a list of programs which run at startup. If the Paltalk uninstall program is listed there, click on the checkbox at its left to clear the checkmark. Then click on Apply, give it a few seconds, then on OK. You'll get a message box that the computer must be restarted for the new configuration to take effect. Makes no difference which choice you take - the configuration will update the next time you restart the computer anyway. If the Pal uninstall isn't listed there, then it's buried in some esoteric place in the registry. |

20 Jul 03 - 10:36 PM (#987239) Subject: RE: Tech: Paltalk From: IvanB Jon also has an obvious answer if the uninstall program is listed under Startup on your programs list, but I have my doubts. msconfig will also run under Win98, but, if I remember correctly, it's not quite as extensive and I don't remember if you can make the system bypass startup programs with it. Another thing you might do is press Start/Run and type in sysedit. This will bring up several of the system control files for editing. Look for any line which has a reference to Paltalk and eliminate it. If Paltalk and any other program(s) are listed on the same line, delete only the Paltalk reference. If it's not one of the places either Jon or I have mentioned, I think the registry's the last resort. Although I edit my registry regularly, you're right, "there, there be dragons!" I can't remember how far back Win98 keeps registry backups, but if you have one dated prior to your install of Paltalk and you haven't installed any other new programs since then, you could possibly drop back to an older registry file which wouldn't have the Paltalk entries. I'm afraid I can't remember the Win98 procedure anymore howver, so someone else will have to give you advice on that. How soon we forget... |

It tries start the main Paltalk program when it finds an internet connection. Ivan may be right and I am pretty sure this program shows in the startup folder. Did you look there? |

I DID edit the registry as best I could and deleted "Palnetaware" etc...and it STILL had 'something' on my machine that would not let me re-install (**IT** thought it WAS still installed!)...only when I had Windows totally re-installed was I able to start fresh with PalTalk. (there may be a copy of PalNetAware in your C:Windows/temp directory!!! There was in mine. |

I had Paltalk on my computer to listen to a live broadcast and after I went through all the signing up and listened to the programme, I was stuck with going in to Paltalk everytime I started my computer. After many weeks of deleting etc. I think I,ve got rid of it. For the record, I found the sound quality dreadfull and the accompanying chat somewhat infantile. There must be a better way of recording live events on the net! |

Sorry you have had such problems, it can be a wonderful thing...if yo do have it on your computer, you can click the "globe" icon on the task bar and the different choices appear. Sorry you had such trouble--whatever a loop is...the opportunity to share live music is the best part of paltalk...you meet such wonderful people there....many mud cats. |
