Anything happening in Cape Town?

I will be visiting Cape Town in S.Africa for a week in August (business trip - day job commands) and I was wondering if there is a folk music scene there, any contacts - perhaps even some Mudcatters? Any tips and hints welcome.

They fire a canon everyday at noon

Evidently the local watch repairing shop sets their big display clock to it

Which is handy

As they fire the canon on time by looking at the watch repairer's display clock through a telescope

Are you telling me there's bugger all happening there folk-wise, then?

Well, I did some more searching on the net, and it appears that there is a club: The Barleycord Music Club, on Monday nights, at the Upstairs Room @ The River Club, Liesbeek Highway, Observatory, Cape Town. And I contacted Bill Knight, one of the residents, who has arranged a 30 min spot for me on Monday 11th August, AND will lend me his guitar (now, that's friendly!).

I will report back. I wonder whether I should sing "Thieves of innocence" (about child soldiers in Africa)....

...and very interesting it was too. The Barleycorn is very focussed on "new material", with a couple of good resident singer-songwriters (look out for Roger Lucy, he's GOOD), but overall a rather strong jazz/rhythm preference. First time that the "Flowers & The Guns" flopped...though "Emptyhanded" got an ovation. Eh, that's the way the cookie crumbles.Heard a great jazz 5-piece band from the townships (Enkasi), and sold 3 CDs, which covered taxi & drinks, so can't complain...If you ever go that way, look for Bill Knights or Alan Eatwell - friendly club!

Well done

I arrived in Cape Town on a sunday & it was closed

Mind you - that was when the `boers' were running the place

Pretty apt name for them

Are you coming up to Barton Le Clay on the 25th

I think Herga's closed for bank holiday?

How about supporting other far flung reaches of the British Empire with your expertise?

And you breezy!!!

There's a pub/bar that does African drumming and you can have lessons whilst you drink - a bit of a disasterous combination.

I can fully recommend the Five Flies restaurant - great food, great premises, and lovely atmosphere. It's near the Law Courts. The Table Bay hotel does a fab line in pampering sessions too in it's beauty salon.

ooo five flies grubbery - ooooh yummy!

Apart from that - go up on to Table Mountain - it's a must. And there's nice coctail bars at Clifton Beach - and enjoy a sundowner drink (Sunset drink).
