ROSES FROM THE WRONG MAN
Written by Christine Lavin
As recorded by Christine Lavin on "Beau Woes and Other Problems of Modern Life" (1987)

She opened the door, surprised to see a deliveryman
Holding a beautiful vase of roses in his hands.
"For me?" she said; he nodded his head.
She took the flowers in and read the note.

Roses from the wrong man;
Poetry written in the wrong hand.
She waits for one; she hears from another
Who tells her how much he loves her
With roses from the wrong man.

She places the vase in the middle of the living room.
The air is scented with the delicate sweet perfume.
She takes a deep breath, closes her eyes,
Shakes her head slowly and sighs.

Roses from the wrong man;
Poetry written in the wrong hand.
She waits for one; she hears from another
Who tells her how much he loves her
With roses from the wrong man.

How long can she hold out for someone who might never come around?
And how many times will this other man try when she keeps turning him down?
She's not getting any younger, but she don't want to settle for less.
Oh, how can such a pretty bunch of flowers trigger such deep unhappiness?

Ever since she was 11 or 12 it was her dream
To receive the kind of flowers carried by the homecoming queen.
And sometimes dreams can come true
In ways you don't expect them to.

Sometimes dreams can come true
In ways you don't want them to.
Roses from the wrong man.

Christine Lavin is unparallelled as a writer of lyrics both touching and funny.

Noreen, have you had any luck yet? Or would you like a MD with the recording by Iain MacKintosh? It was one of the (if not the) most requested songs in his repertoire, and he recorded it on 'Risks and Roses'.

It's getting some airplay on Radio 2 at the moment at both ends of the day... it's very moving.

There but for a typographical error goes the story of my life.

Reviving an extremely old thread. I have loved this song for over 30 years and I'm just now getting around to learning it. The chords above are slightly different from what I worked out.

As an old man, in the modern world with all its hair-trigger sensibilities, I'm a little nervous about performing this song in front of an audience. I don't know if I'll get scowls for singing "she's not getting any younger" because maybe that's something only a woman can get away with saying about a woman these days. And the guy who sends the roses seemed like an object of sympathy in 1987, but I'm sure there will be people who would call him a stalker now. But the song is beautiful, and I think I'm going to give it a shot anyway.

It's a beautiful song, and the gaps in the story are what give the imagination room to explore. And since you brought this up, it provided an opportunity to fix a couple of html errors so the 24 Oct 07 version posted is easier to read.

It reminds me of a song I was looking for about 20 years ago; if I find it it might be worth sharing here. This is what Mudcat is so good for - reminding us of great songs.
