I'm looking for music (either notes or a recording) of the Shaker song "More Love". Thanks in advance for any pointers!

well I have it in front of me(in "The gift to be simple" by E D Andrews)but that doesnt help you.I cant translate it into abc notation. I'll keep an eye on this thread and if nobody's come up with some computer link by tomorrow (I cant do that sort of thing, no computer) I'll figure it out in some notation I can type out. Or you can PM me and get me to sing it down the phone to you or something. But I'm sure Masato will do you a blue clickie to the sheet music in 5 minutes!

Here you are. It took me more than five minutes. To convert ABC to score & midi, use ABC Convert-A-Matic.

Not Simple Gifts-

More love, more love;
The heavens are blessing, the angels are calling,
O Zion, more love!
If ye love not each other in daily communion,
How can ye love God, whom ye have not seen.

There may be more, but this is all that I have.

"More Love" is on Debra Spencer, Shelley Phillips, & Lars Johannesson's
Verdant Groves - A musical journey through four New England Shaker Villages (Community Music School of Santa Cruz, CM 101, 1998) [CD]. Sound clip is HERE.

I tried using the ABC Convert-a-matic link, but it didn't work. First I copied the ABC for "More Love" into WordPad and removed the lyrics. The remaining ABC didn't convert. ("No image available - you must have messed up the ABC.") Then I removed the bracket at the end of the song. That didn't help.

I went to the ABC Tune Finder and tried with an entirely different tune, "David ap Gylym's Tune." That didn't work either.

Any suggestions? For example, am I supposed to paste the preliminary lines (X-K) in as well?

This hymn is also in Albert Christ-Janer, Charles W. Hughes and Carlton Sprague Smith's American Hymns Old and New (Columbia UP, 1980; vol. 1, p. 581 (text, with four-part arrangement; one verse only), vol. 2, pp. 153-54 (note)). Their note says:
More Love
Anon., 1876                   Anon., 1876

The title page of the Shaker A Selection of Devotional Melodies (Canterbury, N.H., 1876) bears the statement: "Simple in Arrangement, Yet,--Inspirational" togther with an appropriate quotation: "Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me" (Ps. 5:23). The text is in prose, as if improvised for the tune. "More Love" should be sung as a unison hymn, and the accompaniment provided here may be omitted.

leeneia, no problem with the file. The file consists of "X:1" (this index is necessary) through the last of the words ("...word").

Thank you, Masato. I tried it again and it worked. I like the tune. It has the old-time spareness of "Be Thou My Vision" and "Holy Manna"

Holy Mamma! :-)

Sorry, i thought that was funny.

Another good Shaker tune is "How can i keep from singing". Enya did a nice version, though you can't understand the words. Yet another one is "Simple Gifts" (It's a gift to be simple, it's a gift to be true (?)), which shows up in Copeland's Appalachian Spring.

"How Can I Keep from Singing" (click here at the CyberHymnal) was written by Robert Lowry (words) and Ira D. Sankey (music). It's not a Shaker hymn. See this thread (and several others):

The form of this is AABB, in two verses: AABB verse one, AABB verse two.

==================================================================

MORE LOVE
From the Canterbury, NH Shaker Community, ca. 1870. Learned from the singing of Debra Spencer on Gourd Music CD VERDANT GROVES. This version adapted, edited, and arranged (C) 2005 for The Good News-Goodtime Band by Susan O. Hinton.

1. If ye love not each other in daily communion,
How can ye love God, whom ye have not seen?
If ye love not each other in daily communion,
How can ye love God, whom ye have not seen?
More love, more love; the heavens are blessing,
The angels are calling, "O Zion, more love!"
More love, more love; the heavens are blessing,
The angels are calling, "O Zion, more love!"

2. If ye love one another, Then God dwelleth in you,
And ye are made strong, To live by His Word.
If ye love one another, Then God dwelleth in you,
And ye are made strong, To live by His Word.
More love, more love; alone by its power
The world love will conquer, for true love is God.
More love, more love; alone by its power
The world love will conquer, for true love is God.
