Animation of Tom Lehrer's 'The Elements'

This is a link to a Flash animation of Tom Lehrer's song, "The Elements"--which, of course, was done to the tune of Gilbert & Sullivan's "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General."
My friend sent this to me some time ago, and I just got around to opening it. Nicely done, I think. I wonder what he'd do with The Formulary Song. (Note that there's a line missing in the DT version.)

By the way, if you check the fine print at the bottom of the page, there's a link to an interesting Australian interview with Tom Lehrer.

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks for the link...it was lots of fun to watch. Is Lehrer still teaching at UC Santa Cruz? He was doing half years there about 15 years ago.

Great link, Mark. I was turned on to Lehrer by my high school English teacher and have been enjoying ever since.

Are we going to see pics of your sojourn?

Thanks -- Tom

Ummm - Did he ever do work for the Animaniacs? There state capital song sounds very much like that? Or does everyone already know this?

It was great, as was the state capital song from the Animaniacs.

I think this is a link to Yakkos World. It wasn't Lehrer after all. But you can see why I made the mistake.

I wasn't trying to be mean at all. I hope no one thinks so. I really enjoy the song 'The Elements' and I really enjoy the song 'Yakko's World' which names all the countries in the world and it sounded very much like "The Elements". I went discovering of Tom Lehrer and found that he had written an old favorite of mine called "Be Prepared". I could never remember all the words but like many went around singing just the chorus. "Be prepared, that a boy scouts marching song", "Be prepared, as thru life we go along" etc.

Thank you for rediscovering him for me!

John, according to the Tom Lehrer interview from Australia which is linked to in that site, Tom "keeps a keen watch on the world from his Santa Cruz beach house and, although he stopped teaching two years ago, he still 'hangs out' around the University of California at Santa Cruz."

Not too many people know that Tom also wrote songs for the PBS children's show "The Electric Company" -- "Silent E" and "L-Y" appeared as bonus tracks on a CD reissue of one of his albums. (For that matter, not too many people still remember "The Electric Company" -- but Naomi does.)

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks for the link on "The Elements". I am responsible for training my personnel in first response for chemical/oil incidents. I'll be using this to open the presentations from now on.

Joe, to give this song some context as far as kids and homework, my father made a small reel-to-reel recording of this and sent it to school with me in fifth grade for my science teacher to enjoy. Mr. Abernathy actually played it for the class (ca. 1964). Okay, so we were probably the only two in the room who even knew who Gilbert and Sullivan were, but I think it went over well (and it was still the correct number of elements back then).

Disappointing - I'd thought they might have animated the periodic table and thrown in a few orbital diagrams.
