Aug 03 - 03:01 PM (#1003656) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: GUEST,Lutz Eikelmann Dickie Bishop had retired in the late 90s, but has become active again in performing, recording and song-writing. We recorded our first CD "No Other Baby" in July 2000 ( release 2001 ) and Dickie was guest vocalist on my CD "The July Sessions", too, singing quite a few jazz numbers along with Ian Wheeler, Sonny Morris, Ray Smith and my Jazzband. In 2002 the british label Upbeat released the CD "Sonny Morris & Friends in Germany with Lutz Eikelmann" ( URCD-181 ) which includes the following numbers featuring Dickie Bishop with lead vocals: All The Girls Go Crazy, The Glory Of Love, When You Wore A Tulip, Lord Lord Lord You´ve Sure Been Good To Me and two Skiffle numbers, Gypsy Davy & Keep Your Hands Off Her. If anybody is interested in the repertory of our NO OTHER BABY - CD, this is it: 01. I Saw The Light 02. Jesse James 03. When I Leave The World Behind *** 04. Keep Your Hands Off Her 05. Gypsy Davy 06. No Other Baby 07. Where Could I Go 08. I Shall Not Be Moved 09. When I Move To The Sky *** 10. Please Remember Me 11. Skip To My Lou 12. Lord, Lord, Lord, You´ve Sure Been Good To Me *** 13. Big Grand Coulee Dam 14. If Those Lips Could Only Speak 15. Gimme More Of That Beer *** *** All numbers featuring Dickie´s lead vocals, but these *** are not together with my Skiffle group, but with my jazzband. On May 10th, 2003, Dickie was live on air at Radio Merseyside / UK and some of his recordings of the 50s were broadcasted between the live interviews as well as some of our recordings of 2000, too. |

Aug 03 - 05:16 PM (#1004861) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: GUEST,Lutz Eikelmann Ok, Roger. Oh, I remember that kazoo and washboard were my early instruments, too. I "stole" the washboard in summer 1981 from my grandma ( I was just 14 years old then ), and I did my first professional recording on that washboard later in November 1990. We recorded in my first official recording session 4 Dixieland tracks for a Music cassette for children --- "Papa & die Babybande" = Papa & The Baby Gang --- which was very successful in Germany in the early 90s and sold many, many thousand times. We got paid a fixed studio fee, no royalties, but that doesn´t matter ... I think it was important for our latest traditional jazz revival, too ... Myself and Benny (Bunny) smoked a little to much. But we all had fun. A few days were hot (weather wise) so we were all very tired but we worked hard. EVERYONE MUST SEND POSOTIVE VIBES TO US!!!! 21 Aug 03 - 08:11 AM (#1005787) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: greg stephens Thanks,Lutz. Any time you're in the UK, come and visit in Stoke and we'll go out and sing Rock Island Line, Stackolee etc with a few of the old skifflers round here. My first faltering step in the move from 78s to more modern technology involved an EP featuring Dick Bishop, which I still have, luckily(a lot of my old records seem to have vanished). |
Aug 03 - 08:18 AM (#1005794) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: greg stephens Lutz: why not join up as a member, then I can send you PMs with endless reminiscences of skiffle groups. I haf vays of making you bored! |
Aug 03 - 08:28 AM (#1005799) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: greg stephens And another thing. This thread seems a good place to remind people of a very important 50th anniversary which will soon be on us. On July 13,1954, the immortal Lonnie recorded Rock Island Line, therby precipitating a musical and lifestyle revolution whose ripples spread a very long way from London and are still rolling on todsy. The record didnt become a hit and start influencing a lot of people till 1956, but 1954 was when it first came out. And all done with a guitar, a washboard and a double bass(not,as myth would have it, a tea-chest bass). So,start planning your skiffle festivals now! |

Aug 03 - 08:00 AM (#1006394) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: Fatboysteve I am Steve, the landlord of the Sun Inn, Beverley. We have been supporting folk and acoustic music since taking over the pub in March 2002 - every Sunday night we book live acoustic acts to play free for the customers. We have some skiffle acts already but I am keen to put on a regular skiffle night on a Wednesday and need to contact more performers for this. Do any of you have contacts for skiffle acts that we could get in touch with? If you look on our website - www.suninnbeverley.co.uk you will see that we have the Doghouse Skiffle Group on every six weeks or so, we have "Kick n Rush" booked and also Paul Leegan in November. 22 Aug 03 - 11:14 AM (#1006510) Subject: RE: Lonnie Donegan Tribute / Germany From: Wotcha Steve, Welcome to Mudcat! I breezed through your fine pub in January while enroute to Harrogate -- I was the pseudo American who sang a couple of songs at the tail end of the Sunday night session (as I remember you had one local dissenter who didn't appreciate the circle getting in his way to the bar ...). May have to drop by again sometime. Cheers, Brian |
