Tech: Site promotion on 0 cash--help!

Hallo, this is for the webmasters and site builders out there. Have you ever created a web site with no money and then attempted to get it into search engines where other people can access it, likewise on no cash? I'm getting frustrated because I have done the former but am having no success with the latter. Is there some way to get the site included in search listings without spending a fortune?

I'll tell you what the site is. It promotes a small magazine which I have started (or at any rate am trying to start). It seemed to me to be a good way to start a magazine with no finances, and then gradually build the thing up (who knows, maybe even go into print one day!!) But it's next to impossible if nobody sees it and I have to think of people who would be interested and then harass them by throwing the url at them on messageboards.

One of my biggest questions is, how and where do I insert metatags?? I don't have much knowledge of html and I made the website using a sitebuilder programme. The 1 search engine that I was successful in listing the site with (unfortunately not one of the "major" search engines) tells me that the site won't even come up if I don't have metatags.

I don't know if there are any tecchies on Mudcat, but if so--any help would be appreciated!

Cheers

Isabel

Visit the World Wide Web Consortium for up-to-date web stuff, and visit your bookstore for a book like Elizabeth Castro's HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide, Fifth Edition.

There are also a lot of techies on here...so, I'm sure you'll get some more input. Good luck! What type of magazine?

Here's how mine got to the top of google: originally it was part of someone else's site which was top of google for his subject. I know some techies will say that's got nothing to do with it so maybe it was sheer luck but there it was before I even knew what meta tags were.
Supposing it's a music magazine... if you ran an article about an artist and put it online then they might put a link on their site to your magazine.
Approach the sort of websites that have lists of links to other resources and see if they will put a link on.
I think some search engines work on how many other sites have links to yours, so not only will this get people visiting your site it might jog you into being listed.
The best day I ever had for hits was the day someone mentioned my site on a major band's emailing list!
Someone I know has cards with the address of the website on and hands them out.
I get junk mail from time to time saying "your website is not being seen, you have to pay us and we'll submit your site or the search engines won't list it" which is patently not true as mine is seen and is listed so persevere! Having said that I'm running a website for an artist, if people put his name into a search engine they will inevitably get fewer returns than if they put in "music magazine" or whatever it us you are running.
Good luck anyway.

Different search engines go about things different ways so you are unlikely to get high ranking pages on a number search engines.

Google, to the best of my knowledge, does not use Metatags at all but uses a ranking system based on links to your site. I believe it works something like the more links to your site, the more "important" your site is. Similarly, sites that provide links to your site are ranked and the more "important" that site is, the more thier link to your site counts in the ranking. As such, it's not surprising jennifer reported what she did.

You would have to read up on how other search engines work to develop strategies.

Most search engines use crawlers which follow links through the Internet so provided you have a link to your site from a site that is already on a particular search engine, your site would be found in time.

There are also services such as submit-it.com where you can submit your page to a number of search engines for free.

I didn't mean to give that link - I only saw pay services there. The one I meant to suggest was submititexpress.com

Search Google for [HTML META TAGS KEYWORDS] and you'll get lots of help.
Also find the Google page that describes how the Google ranking system works, and get other sites that have relevant content to link to your page. As Jon says, Google doesn't use meta tags because they can be abused too easily.

Also, be patient. New sites can take weeks to get listed on Google etc.

There's a number of sensible things to do with the web site itself too. Make sure the main page has some relevant text content with the keywords in it. Don't try clever tricks to jack up your rating - many sites can detect the more extreme versions of these and will downrate them.

Whatever you do, don't pay to have your site submitted to "1000 search engines". Do you know of 1000 search engines? Do you think they are any good? Search engines want your money, but they want your site listed too so it will happen for free eventually.

Thanks so much, I thought this thread had died and then I spotted it in the music threads (was looking for it in the BS threads.)

I really, really appreciate all the help.

Cheers,

Isabel

What will help you most is reverse links. Contact other web sites that are relevant to yours in subject matter and get them to link to your site. When the worms and spiders crawl around the net, they will see your link and improve your ranking. The more links you have out there, the better your search engine rankings.

You can do a backward link search at google. For instance, to see who links to the Mudcat I would search for "link:http://www.mudcat.org". Mudcat has a lot because we've been around a long time (385 to the home page and 718 to the threads page). Allow at least 90 days for your efforts to reveal any success. Good luck.

Like Silly River Stage said, get Castro's book. It will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about HTML and it assumes you can turn on your computer but nothing more.
