What sort of folkie?
I'm not too young any more myself (sigh), but there is plenty going on in the young trad scene. And quite a few of the sessions have a good younger contingent.

"Young" to me means 25 or under, by the way... :)

The Usige Beatha sessions on a Sunday night are pretty well-mixed, age-wise.

So, I'd say, look around... it's there.

Young to me means under 50,and I havnt had much to do with the Glasgow scene since Billy Connolly was a boy ,but try the Scotia and the Clutha In Stockwell Street for information on venues....Youll find a big difference from "Auld Huntly Toun" Best wishes Shonagh    Hi Doug ....Pleased to see your a Scot too, thought you must be one of the old enemy after our last Wee spat...Cheers Ake..

last spat?

I can't remember.
Couldn't have been that bad.

Whereabouts are you then, akenaton?

Shona, do you play, sing, listen? And are you more interested in contemporary or trad stuff? If you can let me know roughly what your interest is, I can maybe be of more help.

Good work starting this thread Shonagh!

I am in Glasgow and looking for people to jam with (I play accordion and sing)... why don't we all (Mudcatters in Glasgow that is) arrange to meet up somewhere? It would be nice to know who's out there...

sounds gúd to me! ill definitely bring my guitar and voice box along. if we work it on a day when there's some good weather, its always nice disturbing locals in city centre parks.

I'm with you Leo, we played outside our flat the other day and got a small crowd! Not this weekend though, cos I'm in England. Anyone go to a regular singaround/playaround that we could meet at?

Hey guys!! Yay, nice to know theres a few in glasgow like! Well, im actually moving down the last weekend of this month, I dont know Glasgow that well so it'd be cool to meet mudcatters! (I play fiddle and sing by the way!)

If you need a singaround, Wednesday evening in Café Source, which is in Saint Andrews In The Square (SAINTS) off Saltmarket.

From 8:00 pm until about 11:30. Admission free.
Mostly singing, occasional tune.

For a more mixed tunes/singing sesh, try Uisge Beatha,Woodlands Road on Sunday evenings from around 6pm. Mixed age range. Young studenty clientele.

For trad tunes, Ben Nevis Argyle Street on a Wednesday.

There is lots more, but that's just a couple....

aye, it'll suit me grand. i know a few of the people who usually turn up at the star club the day after singing in the round anyway, and they're really friendly people.

I'm only young at heart, but a Glasgow meet of Mudcatters sounds like a great idea to me.

If we use the Cafe Source singaround, we should try to get there before it starts, say 7.00 or 7.30 so we can introduce ourselves. Once the singing starts it keeps going.

Cheers, John

OK then, why don't we meet next Wed at 7.30 in the Cafe Source session, everyone who can make it...? We can organise another one for when Shonagh arrives - or, you never know, it might become a regular thing!
I will be the one who is 25 but looks younger carrying a bloody great accordion.

Big Tim, 1: You will by no means be the eldest statesman - our current winner in that category is 82!
2: well, if you're only tone deaf, you'll still be better off than some of the folk that have come along.
3: We're an Equal Opportunities Singaround. In fact, you get extra points for not being Scottish. (The points have no redemption value and may only be used in connection with no offers whatsoever)

Daisy - Box and voice

Shonagh - fiddle and voice

Steve (Scabby Douglas) - guitar, voice and a fine mandolin

Big Tim - song intros (what this man don't know about songs aint    worth knowing - see "Big Tim's new book thread")

Leo - Guitar and voice

John (Dita)- Guitar, 5-string banjo (that's what I've been up to Steve) and voice

Se ya wednesday

Nothing much happens before 8pm because the place is full of diners.

This is really the only dedicated singers session in Glasgow.

You get decent order mostly and you don't have to compete with the endless widdling of box and fiddle merchants showing each other the hundred and fifty variations of the Masons Apron.

A lot of good people go there to sing and there's a lot of experience to draw on.

So if you've a hunger for good songs....

WHAT ABOUT DUNDEE?
I'm studying up there most of the year and am suffering a folk drought!

Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?!

Hey Crystal. Dundee is something of a folk-free zone, it was when I lived there and it remains so to this day, despite the large numbers of Irish students who go there.
Try Mickey Coyle's on Hawkhill on a Monday night. Some of my old mates still play there and the crack's usually good. If you take an instrument in they'll give you a seat.

hopefully more people will be able to attend next wednesday; seems this one might be a bit of a non-event, at least as far as mudcat gatherings are concerned. i'll be there next wednesday anyway. i reckon turning up a wee bit earlier, as suggested, is a good idea (7.30 sounds good). we should be pretty obvious with our instruments clattering about in the wee café anyway. im the odd looking guy with the guitar, long black hair and denim jaikit.

also, the code phrase is: "spring is a lovely time of the year". *taps nose*

Kenny,

The 7:30 idea was so that the Mudcatter's could have a drink, chat and introduce ourselves to each other before the session takes off, save us talking while you are singing. :-)).

And especially saves anyone talking while Big Jim McKenna is singing.

I value my kneecaps way too much.

Come to think of it, I may have (very very politely) asked someone to "shut the f*** up!" while I was trying to sing a couple of weeks back...

And don't mention the hairdressers to Kenny.
(With apoplogies to Randy Newman...)
Hairdressers have no manners
hairdressers have no manners
Hairdressers have no manners at a-all..
They have nasty little scissors going snip, snip, snip
They have great big mouths going lip, lip ,lip
Don't need no hairdressers,
Don't need no hairdressers,
Don't need no hairdressers round here

(Actually, in Kenny's case, and mine, that last line is depressingly true...)

Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?!
From: GUEST,Kenny Caird

There is nothing depressing about having no need for hairdressers!

Male pattern baldness is perfectly natural and is a similar process to a Gorilla becoming a silverback.

It marks us out as elder statesmen in the community.

So there!

The world needs no twittering hairdressers!

Baldies wear your scalps with pride!

I got awful drunk on that Arran Blonde ale last night.

But that was a better session than we've had for ages

Nice to have some fresh new voices.

MacReadie was on great form, and so were Steve and Tom.

I wasn't but that's allowed sometimes when you're a silverback.

And no twittering hairdressers!

Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?!

Second that emulsion.

Although I arrived too late to get in on the introductions, the new voices - (Daisy and friends?) were very welcome. And I hope the rest of us weren't too elderly or decrepit for you to be seen in our company. And even if we were, don't worry, we won't tell anyone...

The great thing is that when you get to hear new voices singing different songs, it gives you a kick up the behind and makes you think about doing different stuff...

Kenny says he was awful drunk. I didn't notice, to be honest...
Call that drunk? Just you wait. I'll show you drunk. You want to see how to forget words, chords, tune, how to speak? I'll show you... just you wait...

Cheers

Well ta very much. We really enjoyed it - it's a lovely venue and everyone there was really welcoming. There's nothing like a song about shagging the devil to really get a room going eh?
I can't make next week 'cause I'm at a conference (sprung on me yesterday) but I might see you folks at the Thursday night session upstairs?

Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?!
From: GUEST,scabby douglas

Just for reference, Daisy..
"Thursday night upstairs" is the Star Club. They do have floor spots, and are very welcoming to new faces, but it's a folk club-format and not a session. It usually goes (as best I understand it but if anyone knows better, please correct me):

************************************
Opening Floor Spot (maybe 20 minutes)
Guest Artist
************************************
Break
************************************
Second Floor Spot(s)
Guest Artist
************************************

Admission to Opening Floor Spot is (again, as I understand it) free, but otherwise in the £5-£6 range.

Just thought you better know, in case you turned up, set for a sesh, and were disappointed....

Cheers

Star folk club format.

Opening spot is generally arranged in advance, usually by invitation.

The club tries to marry up suitable support for the act that's on if possible.

The combinations are often unlikely but that's down to availability.

The second spot is turn up and ask Tom Holmes, or whoever's compere, and if there's space you may get a spot.

I proabably won't be there till between 8:30 and 9. Which Sammy Dow's is it? You can bring your Dad too...

Sorry, have just caught this thread. I was up in Glasgow at the Cafe Source with my better half meeting my lifetime pal Moira on Wed 27/8. There were some lovely singers there and some very good songs. Didn't get in on the singaround as it seemed to be quite a closed circle and being new to the club didn't want to be 'pushy'. Down here the hosts/organisers ask around if there are other singers/performers in the room. Seemed to hit other tables but not ours! Still had a great night and would recommend it as a good gathering. Sorry about the 'late addition'!

10 Sep 03 - 08:02 PM (#1016577)
Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?!
From: Scabby Douglas

MairSea... sorry it came across that way.

The truth is that there are not really any organisers/hosts as such. Tom Laurie, is sort of the "headmaster" when he's there, but when he's not, whowever's feeling bossy enough takes over, just to start things running.

As you saw we run in a fairly regular singaround style, but new people turn up all the time. We're always delighted to see anyone who wants to contribute, but some weeks, there are up to maybe 20 singers, or players looking to participate. It can be tricky trying to fit everyone in. It's not a club in any form.. folk just appear as they see fit.

Also, there are some weeks where Tom has spent a lot of time trying to cajole people to sing. He's more persistent than I am ( on the odd occasion when he's elsewhere and I usurp "control"). If one has to spend more than 4-5 minutes persuading someone to sing, it can really disrupt the flow of the evening. But I take your point. I shall endeavour in future to make sure that whoever's directing the flow offers the floor to anyone not sitting inthe immediate singing circle.

Glad you enjoyed the singing.
And it was nice to meet Leo this evening. Fine voice, nice songs.
