She draws names, matching a Santa with a Santee, gift-giver to gift-receiver. Most people don't reveal who they are until they send the gift, but give silly hints in threads here. (they log on anonymously) It can be a lot of fun, plus, as I said, I now have friends in England, Scotland and Cape Cod! |

02 Sep 03 - 11:10 PM (#1011750) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! From: Stilly River Sage I did a little research. Last year this started on October 9, more or less. Given time to think, then to manufacture a gift or to shop around, it was enough time for most folks. But some gifts took a really long time to make the trip, especially crossing oceans. So starting now isn't a bad thing, especially if we opt to send to another continent. For your reading pleasure, from last year: SRS |

03 Sep 03 - 03:29 AM (#1011831) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! From: Catherine Jayne Clinton....of course you can take part this year but you need to PM me your details!!! SRS.....decided to start it early this year because I have quite a demanding job and work quite a lot of over time so it gives me time to organise it all and the santas to buy/make pressies and post them. I think the best thing is to send pressies recorded delivery if it doesn't cost too much more that way the parcel can be traced should it go missing. I think in the UK it costs about 64p extra on top of postage. I know when we post abroad we pay the little bit extra for piece of mind more than anything else. I really enjoyed myself organising this last year...it was great I knew who got who and watched as they tried to work out their santas from the hints thread!! Lots of response this year already!! We had over 60 catters taking part last year lets see if we can beat that total this year!! Khatt (Secret Santa's Secretary 2003) |

03 Sep 03 - 09:16 AM (#1011960) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! From: Jeri Open mike, I know somebody's secret santa had a stroke during the SS time period, but I don't know if he was yours. I really think there should be some sort of back-up plan such as a squad of contingency santas. I'm guessing that a few people would rather buy 2 people a gift than see someone go without. One other thing - please, if you know your gift's gonna get there in less than a week (in-country mail), don't send it in October or November! Can we please at least aim for Christmas? I'm in. I am going to start looking early this year. I am going to start looking early this year. I am going to start looking early this year. I am going to start looking early this year... |

From: GUEST,SSS at work Hi Last year there was a few people who offered to buy more than one pressie and I am hoping that some more people will volunteer...however this people will be known only to me and the game should hopefully run smoothly. I only found out post organaization etc about the catter that had a stroke and we rallied round and the post were covered. If anyone has any suggestions please PM and also if you want to volunteer to be a standby 2nd santa please let me know. Many thanks SSS |
03 Sep 03 - 09:49 AM (#1011972) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! From: Stilly River Sage Shopping ahead always works for me, because when faced with the last-minute details around here, adding one more purchase to my strained budget is a challenge. So I'll be finding something (and hoping it suits my Santee!) soon. Having something extra in case a Secret Santa (or their parcel) goes missing isn't a bad idea. Perhaps each continent needs someone who could step into the breach, so remedy of the Santa-faux-pas can happen quickly and not have to span continents. And this might be best handled by another PM to CatsPHiddle, letting her know that in an emergency we have a spare tidbit we can pop in the mail. SRS |

05 Sep 03 - 08:27 PM (#1013651) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! From: Helen In Oz if we are sending parcels overseas, and can't afford to send by airmail and have to send by sea then we are told to allow a few weeks for the U.S. and the Brits & Ireland. Maybe 4 weeks if you are optimistic and 6 is a fairly safe bet. If it gets there earlier than that then it is the luck of the draw, because they usually have to wait until the container is full enough to make it worthwhile to send. It used to be that ship mail ("whale mail"?) was the most common and therefore it was sent almost as quickly as you posted it. Now airmail ("albatross mail"?) is more common and so there is no delay in actually getting it in the air. Airmail can be sent economy rather than premium in Oz and this can add a few days to the arrival time. Airmail letters I have sent to the U.S. have arrived within 10 days usually, and 7 is the record for me. Helen |

I am planning to spend this weekend assigning Santas to Santees so you should all hear by Monday at the latest so it will give you plenty of time to shop/make and send. If anyone who wants to take part but hasn't signed up yet you have until FRIDAY 3rd OCTOBER!!! Open Mike, as I have said on many occassions I am really sorry that you didn't recieve your present. I saddens me that someone would agree to be in on something like this and then not fulfill their end of the deal. We do have to give a bit of leeway with the post, post does go missing and I know you weren't the only person not to reciev something or to recieve something late. I am sorry that you feel so bitter and I am not going to go into a lecture about being happy to give and not recieve. I am doing all I can to prevent people from not recieving something. All I can do is appologise Open Mike but can we now please stop the negativity on this subject. People are aware of what can go wrong with the post and I suggest that people send their parcel recorded delivery for the peace of mind. This is supposed to be a bit of fun and I am sure it will continue to be especially when the hints thread goes up sometime next week by the lovely Amos or anyone else willing to start it!! Perhaps next year Open Mike you would like to organise it all....... SSS |

I've had to wait to get one of the items - it's now arrived and the parcel goes tomorrow. I've already apologised profusely, although problems with the post are out of my control. Now I'm feeling crap that my Mudcat friends may be getting the impression that I'm some kind of baddie. I'm not, I've done what I should have, I've now done it again 'cos mike was obviously feeling really bad - is that OK by everyone? (2003) From: GUEST,Someone's Secret Santa I'm asked to mail a package to a single name, that may or may not be a real given name. The address looks complete, but the package has to go overseas. I'm not even sure if the Postal Authorities will take it, and feel less sure about safe delivery on the other end. I don't want to have to guarantee paying for return of an undeliverable package. I've had full names to mail to the past 2 years. I personally use a Mudcat name but have given my full name for SS purposes without problems. Advice please. 14 Oct 03 - 02:15 AM (#1035133) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! (2003) From: Liz the Squeak Well, stuff addressed to Liz the Squeak with the postal address on has made it to me with no problem. Except that E type Jag.... but any day now I'm expecting the card through the door to tell me it's too big for my letter box and can I come and collect. Most postal systems read the address from the bottom up, starting with the post or zip code which tells everything except the number on the door. Judging by the crap we've had put through our door with our neighbours (as many as 20 doors away)names on, no one reads the names anyway. You could always address it to 'The Mudcatting Occupant' and the PO will think it's a new swear word! LTS |
14 Oct 03 - 06:58 AM (#1035250) Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Time Again! (2003) From: sian, west wales I see SSS's problem. Posting stuff anymore is a real lottery - depends on which postal workers handle your stuff and how paranoid they're feeling on any particular day. I think it's worth a PM to Catsphiddle to ask her to ask the Santee for a more 'deliverable' name if Santee wants a fair chance at receiving her/his largesse this Festive Season. BTW Liz - loved your 'hint' on the other thread. Bet you crack walnuts with a pneumatic hammer too! Back on the subject of paranoia - and not wanting to drift the thread too far - our college e-mail system has been refusing e-mails to me from our National Assembly because the Subject line is notifying me of a forthcoming meeting with our Minister of Environment, Sue Essex. Took postmasters at both ends a couple of days before realizing that "esSEX" was causing the problems. Net Nannies go wild! sian |
