The thread title hints at the date, but to dignify it with days, we kick off on the night of Friday 30th April, and disperse during Monday 3rd May, which is a public holiday in the UK. The weather can usually be relied on to be appalling at that time, with the notable recent exceptions of 1997 (when we changed Governments) and 2003. Yes, we British are obsessed with weather. I mention this here in case any potential attendees are already packing; put in ice pick and crampons as well as the bikini wax. We are to gather in the village of Barrow Upon Humber, in North Lincolnshire, here . Barrow is about five kilometres south of the city of Hull, across the wide expanse of the muddy River Humber. From Hull, one has to use the magnificent Humber Bridge, which alights at Barton Upon Humber, four miles to the west of Barrow. We are still fine tuning the event, and will post more here nearer the time. I will also do some research on local accomodation in the reasonably near future. Greg |

Flying is a cheap option, but sadly the nearest airport that offers runway space to budget airlines is Leeds/Bradford, and you will then be involved with expensive and time consuming rail journeys. We do have a perfectly suitable international airport on our doorstep, at Kirmington (Humberside Airport), but only sheiks and lottery winners are able to afford to use it. I would suggest booking P&O Ferries out of Rotterdam Europoort, as a foot passenger, on the night of Thursday 29th April 2004, disembarking in Hull on the morning of Friday 30th April, spend the day probing the soft underbelly of Hull, after which I will collect you and drive you over the water to Barrow. Likewise, I will return you to the ferry terminal in Hull to catch the evening boat on Monday 3rd May. Change any of the dates above to suit your itinerary (i.e. I can have one of my people meet the Saturday morning boat, and/or deliver you back on Sunday night) Andy and Wilfried, we should be able to run to floorspace for both of you, so consider yourselves housed, however Spartan the truckle So that's sorted. |

I have it down that Doo Ron and Glen have bagged the double room at the B&B over the road, and that Wolfgang has first refusal on the other, single room there (if he doesn't fancy the indoor camping in my bothy). Incidentally, it is run by the redoubtable Mrs Styles, whose architect, cyclist, musician and all round good egg husband has a website here where fine whistles are available. The Moos and the Vikings are staying at our shack, as is Mudguard and Letty, but I'm worried that the sewer won't cope with any more. However, there are seven beds available in various configurations at King's Well, in Goxhill which is in the next village to Barrow, roughly two miles to the east. There is also Glengarth B&B in Goxhill that may be worth checking out. If you fancy hotelling it, there is Reeds Hotel, near Barton Upon Humber which affords expansive views of Oakley's whelk pens, but that is a good four miles west of Barrow and the centre of activities. Camping and caravanning is also an option, which will probably bring damnation on the weather. There is one in Barton Upon Humber Having said all that lot, I wish I had found this page first, as it has the whole lot listed there! Even I'm starting to look forward to it now! |

It is about a fifteen minute walk to the caravan site from the middle of Barrow, but I feel that the facilities there would be much better for the caravanners and campers. Dave, there is some room down the lane beside our gaff, but it belongs to our neighbour, who can be, err, mercurial. I will ask them soon if we can invade their ground, but the site will afford far comfier conditions. Please let me know which option you want to pursue. The theoretical top limit is however many folk we can squeeze into the village hall, which is many, and the capacity of the two village pubs (the now legendary Six Bells, and the other one, which I think is called the Royal Oak) which is also many. However, when the usual date of the Eurogathering was decided upon for the UK leg, it caused nearly as much schism as when the one true church ended up with a Pope in Avignon as well as yer man in Rome, and as in UK terms it clashes with Mayday highjinks and the Moron Cursed (as they seem to ennunciate in 'Ull) junket in Whitby, there is likely to be a good deal of numbers dilution, which is fine with me, as long as everyone is happy doing what they're doing. In summary, I don't want anyone to go on a three line whip and end up with pressed men. Or wimmin. |

The planning is still at a fluid stage, as we chaos merchants say, but initial ideas are thus:- Friday night (30th April) Mixed song and tune session in Six Bells, Barrow Saturday Lunchtime (1st May) Mixed song and tune session in Haven Inn, Barrow Haven Saturday afternoon Cultural tour of Hull, by coach from and to Barrow (these are high points of Eurogatherings) Saturday night Centrepeice concert, Barrow Village Hall, featuring a performance by Cara, open mic and separate singaround and tune sessions (if wanted) Sunday Lunchtime (2nd May) Mixed song and tune session in Royal Oak, Barrow Sunday Night Survivors' Session in Six Bells, Barrow Monday (3rd May) Depart to seek liver transplant. These are usually just fields with a water point and elsan emptying facilities, although some do have loos and electrical hook-ups. They are usually quite cheap £5 or less. Officially they only allow CC members and are restricted to a maximum of 5 pitches, but many that we've been on don't enforce these rules strictly. West Marsh Lane, Barrow Haven DN19 7HA. The first (about 1 1/2 miles away) now costs £6.50 per night but that includes a power hook-up, there is a single toilet. The second (about 3 miles away) now costs £4 per night, no hook-ups, but it does have 2 toilets (male & female). I probably will go for the second as I shouldn't need the hook-up (for a radiator) at that time of year. |

Part of the field may be under hay so the numbers on-site would have to be negotiated There is a small amount of hard standing for caravans and the like but no hook-ups. There is a tap but no toilet facilities so you would have to bring your own loos. There is a strong possibility of a marquee being available for after session socialising. If we're likely to be there on our own, we'd probably rather park our van next to Skipjack's. We shouldn't need a hook-up in May, about the only thing that would be useful is somewhere (ie a drain) to empty a porta-potti if it becomes full. We have a whole herd of gazebos if needed. |

Firstly, that everyone accepts that the Eurogathering always happens on the first weekend in May, and secondly that I want everyone to do what they want, and attend the function that appeals to them most. Their phone line is one of those automated ones that you have to speak to - arrrgh! Anyway, I'm going to try and bum a life to Sheffield and get a train from there. I think my mates should be going climbing that weekend (oh, the sacrifices I make for Mudcat!) so that gets me as far as Stanage Edge at least. |

Maggie and I discussed it and we said that we might give Moor and Coast a miss for one year. If I'm in Hull I'll be delighted to give you all the runaround (and I can cetainly use a few £57s). I'm imagining a walking tour of the Old Town following the route of the Fish Pavement. If I'm not available there should be a leaflet available from the Tourism Office (under the City Hall) that will give details of the buildings on the route (I was involved in helping produce this leaflet when I 'worked' for the Council). The route passes (through?) at least three of our significant pubs, Minerva, Black Boy and Olde White Harte. Anyone who favours museums over pubs (anyone?) can visit them (they're free!) while the others wait in congenial settings for the others to catch up. Les |

(On the other hand, if there's someone from Sheffield already planning to drive, I'm quite happy to ride (if you have space) & contribute to petrol costs.) If I turn out to be the *only* one coming from the Sheffield area, then I'll probably try to get a train to Hull -- if some kind soul could be persuaded to give me a lift from Hull to the site of the actual gathering. BTW, had the pleasure of meeting the Ducks this weekend (at the Barnsley Folk Festival -- great singing!); we were talking about the Euro Gathering & I mentioned I'd seen their names on the list above -- with a question mark. Jane and Geoff Duck have told me that it is unlikely they will be able to make it, so there's no need to reply on that one. I can produce Mudcat badges in either size complete with your own name. If you want to supply your own artwork you can bring it either pre-printed (on thin paper) or on a floppy disk in a standard graphics format. I can't rememember the diameter of the actual cut-out for the badges, but will check up when I get home - so you can print a circle for cutting purposes (to get more accurate alignment) if you so wish. |

Thus, my decision to spurn what I believed to be another attempt by the travel indistry to lure innocent offshore islanders into further debt with enticements to cross the Channel...sigh (sorry - Oaklet was at the pub last night , and is, i fear, contagious...) SO.. if it's all right with you folks I intend to attend - can only make the Sunday though, as I shall be lighting the Beltane Fire on the Saturday. Can I assume that if I turn up for the afternoon session this will "merge" into the survivors bash in the evening - thus saving me the trouble of an 80 mile round trip to attend both? Dáithí |
