Louie, too many songs. Can you give us a few snippiets of lyrics? Or, author, artist, anything?

Sorcha,I found it on the internet I'm not sure where I'll have to find it again but it was such poor quality I couldn't understand the lyrics. Many Fiddlers and Harmonica players play this tune and it is beautiful. The name is South. When I find it again I will post the location and maybe someone with better ears than I have can decipher thelyrics Louie Roy

I have found South Coast, South Wind, a band called Beautiful South, but nothing at all for just South. Try checking JC's Tunefinder for Southwind. It is a beautiful, common tune and the lyrics that I have seen are in Gaelic.

I remember this as a famous instrumental by Benny Moten. There were no words. Written in the 1920s, It had a revival in the 1950s or 1960s with the original recording re-issued.

"South," Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, 1926-1929- a cd put out by RCA contains this as well as other pieces by the Moten Orchestra.
Moten issued the piece twice, 1924 (Okeh) and 1928 (Victor). Bennie Moten

One of the founders of modern jazz.

Thanks Q and all the others who have answered my request. This is the tune written by Bennie Moten and I never had any idea it was written and recorded back in the 1920s.Appartently since then someone has added the lyrics and as I said before I found one recording somewhere on the net that had the words and I'm still searching. It sticks in my mind that Rose Maddox did a recording with the words but I'm guessing. Thanks to all of you Louie Roy

The Maddox Brothers and Rose did indeed record "South." It's on their album "America's Most Colorful Hillbilly Band: Their Original Recordings 1946-1951, Vol. 2," Arhoolie CD 437, 1995. You can hear a sound sample at Yahoo! Shopping > Music.

The Kirk Collection Kirk Collection at the Indiana State University Library has the sheet music of the vocal version (but not online). Here's the catalog entry:
    Title: South.
First Line: Down below that old Dixon Line, there's a place that really is fine
Chorus: Where the folks are happy and gay, and the easy way is the right way
Music by: Moten, Bennie, and T[hamon] Hayes.
    Words by: Charles, Ray.
P/P/D: New York : Peer International Corporation, c1941.
    Location: SPC, KIRK PS 1940-1941
Here's what I transcribed from a sound sample at Yahoo! Shopping > Music:
Down below that old Dixon Line,
There's a place that really is fine.
Don't you know what I'm talkin' about?
    You want to find out,
Then take a tip from me:
Down below that old Dixon line,
Where the sun is happy to shine,
Where a friendly face is common to see,
That's where I'm longin' to be.
Where the folks are happy and gay,
And the easy way is the right way,
Where the bees make honey all day,...
Spade Cooley also recorded this song in a western swing style, but the only sound sample I could find didn't contain any lyrics.

I believe that this song was recorded on one of Bob Wills' live albums as a fiddle instrumental. The words fit the melody I know, at least, and the title is the same.

I recall the Wills instrumental. Don't remember the date, but it was during the revival of Moten's piece.

South (1924)

(m) Thamon Hayes, Bennie Moten (w 1941) Charles Carpenter (P 1928) Bennie Moten Orch. (CR) Edward "Kid" Ory (RR) Maddox Brothers and Rose (from where these lyrics are transcribed)

Down below that old Dixon line there's a place that really is fine.
Don't you know what I'm talkin' about?
You want to find out, then take a trip with me.

Down below that old Dixon line where the sun is happy to shine.
Where a friendly face is common to see
That's where I'm longin' to be.
Where the folks are happy and gay
And the easy way is the right way
Where the bees make music all day
Don't you know you're right next to heaven down south
Where the moon shines mellow and bright
And the breeze plays tag with the night.
That's where the sundown gals hold you tight.
Lordy, how I love the south!

That is from
