Irish records for a Russian

Subject: BS: Irish music for a Russian?
From: McGrath of Harlow

My wife's asked me to come up with a short list of recommended records for the husband of a Russian friend. He's Russian too (with good spoken English, and he's mad keen on Irish music, having come across the Chieftains.

I've got my ideas, but I thought it'd be the kind of thing where a Mudcat brainstorm might come up with a better list.

Anything you can get from our own Aidan Crossey aka derrymacash. Excellent!

I also recommend Altan, esp. their first two tapes.

I could listen to the Chieftains forever and not get tired of it!

Also on the Mudcat, a great group from OZ or New Zealand, so not strictly Irish...listed their CD on here, where I found out about it and ordered it. It has been one of my favs for a long time now. Group is Lothlorien; CD is Greenwood Side.

I find that people who enjoy the Chieftains also usually enjoy Bothy Band and Planxty. And anything with Liam O Flynn, Na Fili, Michael McGoldrick's "Morning Rory" is excellent. In the Matt Molloy/piping style, I'd also consider Seamus Egan too. Catherine McEvoy, or Joe Burke (I'm rather partial to Sligo style myself, but love Joe Burke). Certainly the early Maighread Ni Mhaoinaigh and Frankie Kennedy albums are wonderful too for the flute/piping/Molloy sort of personal style. "O Riada's Farewell." Seamus Ennis. Anything by Micheal O Suilleabhain. Willie Clancy and one of my favorite pipers, Ronan Browne. Leo Rowsome perhaps. I'd try to vary the regional styles a bit, but give him a taste of some different personal styles too.

There are really too many to mention, but I'd guess if the man enjoys the Chieftains, he would likely enjoy anything with pipes, harp, piano and harpsichord, and flute, as those instruments are the signature sound of the Chieftains.

Sorry, meant to also add anything by Derek Bell of course, or covers of O Carolan--Grainne Hambly comes to mind there. I also like Sue Richards and Ann Heymann for their harp styles, though not strictly Irish.

DeDannan's energy level is amazing. Wish we could sound even a bit like them.

Celtic Way and Derek Bell`s Musical Ireland, these two CD`s or Cassettes by Derek Bell.
I intoduced a US cousin to Irish music with these two tapes, she has since bought every Chieftains CD and is a confirmed devotee. Ard Mhacha.

Aw, I thought this was about whisky!

I was going to say Planxty, but was beaten to it, but I think I'll say it anyway.

Is he also into vocals, or just instrumental stuff?

Kat,

Yes, they were the nucleus of Altan and issued a couple of records in their own names before the group took on the name.

And I'll re-endorse Liam O'Flynn.

I would suggest also Flook's "Flatfish" and "Rubai" and Lia Luachra's "Traffic".

Peace,

Thanks, Plumber, you'd think I could've remembered that having seen them perform in Rhode Island while Frankie was still alive and all they had were cassette tapes! I still love those tapes!

Oh, McGrath, I forgot there are some fine samples at Green Linnet records, don't know if all of the artists are still mad at them or not, but you used to be able to listen to a whole CD there. Ah, I see they've changed it a bit, now. You can go to this page and use Real Audio to listen, but not download a whole CD, OR, choose mp3 format and download sample songs from new releases.

Also, don't forget, Dick Greenhaus at Camsco can get almost any CD/tape for you and that Sandy and Caroline at Folk Legacy have some good deals, too. All help to support the Mudcat.:-)

Another Band is Moving Hearts. They made some wonderful Music together.
Danu, Altan and DeDannan are all superb.
On the solo Singing front I'd have to recommend Sean Tyrell. The Man is just amazing.

Actually, the suggestions I originally made were for acts that would be "like the Chieftains" or "in a Chieftains vein". Is this new thread, now moved out of the BS section, simply a "my fave Irish acts" sort of thing, or is it about making reasonable recommendations specific to the original request?

Seems like the latter, mostly. Some good suggestions I'd already thought of - and some good suggestions I hadn't thought of. Very welcome.
