I got this e-mail below yesterday from our Mudcat friend Bilge Rat:

"For those who don't know him, Hughie Jones is a former member of the great English folk group from Liverpool, the Spinners, who has written many delightful maritime songs that have become standards in the sea music community. If you haven't seen and heard Hughie in person, it's well worth the trip to historic Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island, NYC to spend an enjoyable musical afternoon."

"Hugie Jones at the Noble Gallery, Sailors' Snug Harbor [Snug Harbor Cultural Center] in Staten Island, NY. on Sunday, Oct. 12 @ 2 PM. Admission for the concert will be $10. The building that houses the Noble Collection used to be the dormitory where the old snuggies (retired sailors) bunked. In all likelihood the very space where "Leaving of Liverpool" was collected.

If you could forward this through your email grapevine, I would appreciate no end. If anyone wants additional info they can call me at (718) 816-6175. The gallery opens at 1 PM and is quite interesting in and of itself.

Bob Conroy"

Sounds like a great concert!

If you have the chance to see Hughie perform and you miss it, then you'll be sorry. He's a superb performer - both in terms of musicanship and warmth of rapport with the audience. He exudes Liverpool wit and charm combined with the experience of being a professional performer for many years - and he is one of the nicest, most genuine blokes you are ever likely to meet.

Sailors' Snug Harbor - where Bill Doerflinger collected "The Leaving of Liverpool" from Dick Maitland - what a great place for a maritime music concert! I'll be there.

All the best,

Sailor's Rest

G-----------------D--------------G--------------C
There's a-cri-mo-ny down in the card room, with win-ning hands thrown on the baize,
---D-------------------------------------------------C--------D
For-got-ten cards wait on the end of de-bate, all about the good old days;
G7-----------------------------------C-------------------A
Cap-tains and Mates get-tin' tes-ty, with me-mo-ries not of the best,
G------------------C------------------G
Tem-pers are ris-ing, down at the Sailor's Rest.

Blue eyes in wrinkled Morocco, still scan the horizon for squalls,
Zeroes in the skies of the lookout's eyes, where he should see pawnshop balls;
Spice in the wind off Java, and the bars in Pepeete were best,
But the deck is too steady, down at the Sailor's Rest.

Chorus:

D-------------------------------C
Oh, how they talk of the day they ar-rived,
Em-------------------C----------------------Am---------D
Af-ter the years, all the storms and the tears, still ve-ry much a-live,
--------------G7------------------C
Oh, how their lives spilled out on the floor,
---------Em----------------------Am
From the bat-tered old sea-bags, the jour-nals and logs,
--------Em--------------------A7
And the keep-sakes locked in the chests,
----------G---------------C------------------G
That were stored in the attic, down at the Sailor's Rest.

No rail on the messroom table, and you're dead if you spit on the floor,
No grog allowed, no singin' too loud, and no locks on the doors;
But there's always a fire in the card room, and the tucker is always the best,
And they'll end it together, down at the Sailor's Rest.

Chorus:

Oh, how they talk of the way they survived,
After the years, all the storms and the tears, still very much alive,
Oh, how their lives spilled out on the floor,
From the battered old seabags, the journals and logs,
And the keepsakes locked in the chests,
That were sold at the auction, down at the Sailor's Rest.

Be nice if someone actually sang this song at this gathering.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
