BS: Help! `Catter needs a 'fix'

Edain is in America, west coast, studying for the next year. SHE NEED TEA! Propper tea, English tea, like you get in the supermarket in England, not fancy Twynings or Liptons with bits of string hanging off, but REAL tea, like PG TIPS or TYPHOO. Is there anywhere in California that sells it? Is anyone going there that could take her some? (Shelbacks? hint hint!!) The only thing I can suggest is trying TESCO "on line" and ask when the next delivery van is going to California. ( I think they go there on Tuesdays:-)
Either that or find an English family that live there and see if you can "borrow" a couple of tea bags, (I am sure there is a family called Osbourne who live in California somewhere).

Both PF Tips and Typhoo are easily obtainable in the San Francisco Bay area. Where is Edain?

Dave, I think in the L.A. area?

Bassic, Goodwoods does mail-order all over the country and all they sell are British goods, teac, food, etc.

My niece's soon-to-be-mother-in-law in San Diego is from the UK. If all else fails, I can ask my niece to find out where she gets her tea.

Has she checked with any health/natural foods markets? Should be loads of them and there's bound to be some import shops as well which should have it. (We really didn't chuck it all over the side way back when in Boston, ya know?**BG**)

Good luck!

Edain is in San Diego (UCSD) studying for the next year, so kat's niece's nearly-mother-in-law(!) could be of great help!

Looks like there will be tea to be had when she's found her way around. I'm just surprised she didn't take a year's supply with her- tea bags are the first thing I'm packing for my Getaway trip!

I checked the goodwoods site and found box of 240 pg tips to cost £15 without postage, can't you post some from this country (UK) to USA?
Strewth, given the cost and the usual student habits, she'll have to use each teabag at least 3 times to make it economicaly viable!

I am emailing my niece in just a moment. She's is getting married this Saturday next and working on a research paper at the moment, so it might take a day or two to get a reply. I didn't know Edain was in San Diego! She should get together with my niece, etc. sometime!

Anyway...with any luck, I'll have some info, soon.:-)

Do a search in Mudcat on tea. We've had this discussion before. I've recommended Market Spice Tea out of Seattle. I bought a bunch of good loose tea very inexpensively when I was in New York City this summer. Pearl River Mart. Here is their tea page. Very reasonably priced, very good quality. I plan to shop there online myself when I run out of this if I can't think of an excuse to go to NYC before then.

These shops might help her to feel more at home: Tea Parlours, some of which are in San Diego and specialise in English teas, etc.

She needs to go to Extraordinary Deserts on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest and try Cost Plus in La Jolla, and I think we'll be able to see her through this.

I've also sent her over to Trader Joe's which is closer to the campus.

Tea shouldn't be treated reverently as if it was some kind of ornate ritual. It's significant that, as I've heard it, when the Japanese Tea Ceremony is completed, they throw away the stuff they've made, because it's not drinkable. That's where ritual gets you in such things. Tea is for drinking, preferably by the pint.

Incidentally, having a string on a teabag isn't for show, it's to help you fish the thing out without getting your fingers wet. But loose tea does make better tea, and if you have to use a bag it's still better to use a pot then just the cup, and it's a lot less messy.
