The club will take place every Tuesday from next week with sing arounds and guest artists (there will be a £1 charge on sing arounds).

If there are any queries I will repond to them asap.

Glad to see the old club restarting. There used to be one there 25 years ago it had some cracking guests. Hope all goes well for you. Great bloke to start off with.

Good luck to the new club, let's hope it is successful as the old one that I remember from the days I lived in Bedford and was very active in the folk scene in the area (late 70's).
I have very fond memories of the Ampthill club, if only as it was the first club that booked 'Kinsfolk' the trio I was then in with Roy and Louise Martin. Does anyone remember the large concert club that I helped Roy and Louise run in Kempston?

Anyway, good luck to the club and all involved, I knew it wouldn't take Cllr too long to get involved in a new venture!

chicken and egg, who do you get first the artist or the audience?
If you have no artiste you get no audience.

Hamish and Lorna, you havent heard of them??
You havent been to Chesham then, nor Baldock, how about Malcolm Hobbs then?
Kitty Vernon and Les Sullivan ? they played to an intimate gathering at Uxbridge last Tuesday and gave a us a magical evening and les' songs have woven their way into many a singers repertoire without them realising it.Two of his songs were heard last night at the 'Shed' in Croxley green

Steve Tilston Tonight at the Comfort Hotel St Albans fri 3rd Oct

Is this the same club as the one advertised in the local folk press as "Ampthill Acoustic Club"? I know the "F" word puts people off but I never bothered sampling it as I like "F*lk" music and can't stand the sort of soft core pop that is marketed as "acoustic".

14 Dec 03 - 07:14 PM (#1072410)
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire
From: George Papavgeris

I don't do "soft core pop", whatever that is, GUEST...No, I definitely don't...

15 Dec 03 - 06:53 AM (#1072720)
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire
From: GUEST,efn Magazine

From the steady stream of "acoustic" CDs that I get for review I know exactly what is meant. The sort of act who thinks that "folk" just means plugging an acoustic guitar into the PA.

15 Dec 03 - 07:19 AM (#1072739)
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire
From: Hamish

Guest: if you know Maidenhead, Herga and Windward folk clubs - where George is resident - you would know that he wouldn't survive too long if it was soft core pop. And when you know that Vin Garbutt and other folk (with a capital"F") luminaries cover his songs, you're left in absolutley no doubt.

15 Dec 03 - 11:03 AM (#1072929)
Subject: RE: New Folk Club in Ampthill, Bedfordshire
From: George Papavgeris

GUEST, I wouldn't plug in for less than 250 audience - and even then I prefer a mike for the guitar to actually plugging in.
I, too have occasionally heard some material - generally from Londoners trying to break into the Home Counties folk circuit - that might fit your description of "soft core pop", but not that much. And as Hamish said, Herga, Maidenhead and Windward would have none of that anyway.
Tell you what: Ignore labels like "acoustic" for an evening, and come to Ampthill tomorrow night. If at the end you feel your journey was wasted, I will personally refund you your petrol, beer and entrance money; say about £20.
And if you decide that it wasn't wasted, you buy all three of my CDs (at Mudcatter prices, £20 for the three), and review them in your magazine.
Up for the challenge?

Planning at least 3 unusual additions to the repertoire for tonight, partly to avoid me being bored hearing me do the same stuff, and partly because Mike Blair will be there - and I know which songs he likes.
Planning and Practicing are two different things, of course...

Dont talk to me about traffic lights I got more hassle about traffic lights last month than any other issue, any way back in the seventies I thought there was a folk club in The white hart hotel in ampthill so Hovering Bob was telling me.
Reason for Ampthill Acoustic = AA might be easier to publicise it we do have blues as well as folk and possible some Jam sorry jazz Cllr (at work)

Now you've mentioned that place,it just doesnt have the atmosphere that an intimate setting with other personal factors can produce.
Its a hard gig there unless your world famous.
Have you done afloor spot there since?
Hope yuo'll spot for us at the 'Spotlight' club where 4 floor spots gets you a 'Spotlight' Gig with a listing in unicorn!!!What other club can make that offer?
Chris Flegg has joined our team of residents.Who? Come and find out.
Bet that place is nowhere near as friendly as |Barton even, certainly not better than Mike Blair's Bedford.
