The power of Mudcat has lured American Folk Philosopher Jerry Bryant into the glare of our headlights - we are somewhat humbled to report that he has agreed to participate in the next Singers Night on 16th October.

" ... Perhaps the Mudcat outages are like the song of a humpback whale, going on for hours yet with identifiable phrases that repeat ....."

What's a "Folk Philosopher"?

Doktor Doktor,

Can I get you to create for me a nice diploma for a PhD in Folk Philosophy? It would sure look great on the wall of my office.

But DD, you're not taking the credit due for your insights. "Slow Morse code" is, I believe, how you described the intermittent disappearances of the Mudcat from the 'Net.

Russ, I'm nothin' but a lover of music, so I hope to sing and be sung to on the 16th, over a proper pint or two.

Jerry or DD,

What and where is Stortfolk? My guess is UK, which is not convenient to Delaware.

Russ
It's in the town of Bishops Stortford, which is in the county of Essex, east of London. I think it's a little too far from Delaware for a flying visit.

Oh Jacqui, Bishops Stortford isn't in Essex - it's still (just) on the Hertfordshire side of the border. Still quite far from Delaware though.

I'm sure the Stortfolk regulars are phlegmatic enough to cope with an American Folk Philosopher, Les Sullivan and me, and then Breezy, on consecutive Thursdays. Well, they'll have to be, because that's what they'll be getting for the second half of October.

Sorry Kitty - my mistake - I always get mixed up over the borders!

Essex Customs will get you at the border if you don't watch out Jacqui.

BTW Tony Kendall's with us next week - he's an Essex Customs man ........ so make sure your papers are in order!

Hmm. Pholk Filosopher, sounds interesting.

"Eureka" he exclaimed, leaping naked from his banjo case. "I have found it! - the answer to life, the universe and everything! Mudcat!"

Might have to clear it with Douanier Kendall and sneak across the border for that one. Maybe for John and Kitty, too, if I'm not in exile in Nottamun at the time.

Does anyone know which bishop owns Stortford, anyway?

You might be able to get there from Delaware - there's a big airport nearby !

I don't suppose that anyone's really interested, but Bishop's Stortford was in the fiefdom of the Bishop of London, and a castle (known as Waytemore Castle) was built to defend the ford on the river Stort that was on the ancient Stane Street road that ran from Colchester (Camulodunum) to (I think) St Albans (Verulamium). Only the castle mound and the name of the town remains to remind of this.

There's a pub there called The Castle too - we had a good one-night session there once I remember. So good I don't think they ever asked us back... But I could be wrong about that last. Maybe it was just me that never got asked back.
