I'd recommend just singing "rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb." But if it's a really short song, like Tequilla, just sing rhubarb once, okay?

Largo, because no one else would take your request seriously I searched the DT on your behalf. It produced the following:

"Sorry, no documents were found which match your query."

If I'm correct this is the first line of the missing last verse of an old Burl Ives song:

MARY ANN REGRETS

Sorry, no documents were found which match your query,
I know you've no passport and your story makes me teary,
Without boarding papers believe me the shit hits the fan,
Say bye bye to Europe. Get a life, without May Ann.

Yet he that doth read, or heare it, shall find
Something of nothing to pleasure his mind

To a Dainty New Tune

Some men of nothing doe matters endite,
And some men of small things large volumes doe write;
But if you will give me leave, I will recite
A Song made of Nothing

Yes, I've "miss-typed" and pressed enter key instead of Tab to change the field so that's how it went on. But if you folks would pay 1/10 of your attention and 1/10000 of your enthusiasm to "un-empty" same-named thread you could probably help me. Baz,

Of course it is a folk song. It predates the written record and there is no known author. And yet it remains popular still today.

Certainly it addresses the life and times of the common woman and man. At allmost every folk circle I have attended, someone in the circle does this song.

Whoops, HERE IT IS!

TALKIN' NOTHIN' BLUES
(from the LP on Riverside--mid 1950's--Chicago Mob Scene)

Well, I looked up the hall to the top of the stair,
I didn't see the man who wasn't there,
There was lots of nothing, nothin' at all
Lots o' nothin' all over the wall,
A predominance of vacancy.

There was a man on the corner, he was standin' around,
He was spreading some nothin' all over the ground,
I heard some passin' people say,
All that nothin's in the way.
There ought to be a law.

I went to the cupboard, the cupboard was bare,
Lots of nothin', nothin' was there,
I turned around and I scratched my face,
So darn much nothin' all over this place,
In my pocket,
In my wallet,
In my icebox.

I figured I'd better lay in a supply,
So I went to the store some nothin' to buy,
In the window I saw a big display,
They've got lots o' nothin' on sale today,
They got pans, bars, jars, crates,
Boxes with no handles,
All vacuum packed.

Salesman said, he said, What'll it be?
Well, I'll take nothin'--nothin' for me,
How do ya want it---big or small,
Short & skinny--fat or tall,
I'll take some with bows on it.
Wrap it up nice, you know, for a gift.

This song was written with nothin' in mind,
Nothin' at all of any kind,
Nothin' at all of any degree,
Aint nothin' in it that I can see.
Nothin',
Nothin',
You know what I'm talkin' about,
Nothin' !

Well, you can't divide by zero because the result would be 1. Since 1 is something, one would have to multiply to perpetuate its current value. Either that or leave it be!

- ya can't make something out of nothing

That last statement is scary Allan!! There's some things that are just better off if NOT multiplied for perpetuation!!! (little smiley emoticon)

Art, my husband (Bill D) learned the Talkin' Nothin' Blues with the following last verse:

This song was written with nothin' in mind,
Nothin' at all of any kind,
Nothin' at all of any degree,
Aint nothin' in it that I can see.
Nothin' at all in any respect --
We was aided by a poverty of intellect.

I looked at the thread title and ignored it, thinking it was 'nothing' I would care about...when I should have been here at the beginning, since I both follow folk music and have studied 'nothing' extensively. I took an entire course in Jean-Paul Sartré's "Being & Nothingness" where we debated such things as the 'phenomenological & existential reality of absence'........

and let me tell you, in all my years I NEVER saw a better exposition of the myriad aspects of 'nothing'!

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

I think I'll go sing "Nottumun Town" and "Talkin' Nothin'"

T, I'd have thought that when God divided by zero, that would have been the big bang, and THAT'S a singularity. (Until Quantum mechanics suggested it wasn't - we were THAT close to proving God exists.)

Consider, if you will, the song, "Yes, We Have No Bananas". Clearly, the absence of bananas is a concept which has meaning, and therefore 'existence'...and on a different level than in the songs, "I've Got Plenty of Nothin'" or "Talkin' Nothin' Blues"

For more explanation of the matter go here or here

(correct...# 1 more closely illustrates 'Tabula rasa' and #2 contradicts its own thesis..and this is just totally silly) ...while this page called 'Cyberlimbo' comes close, though differing little from this

"We will meet, but we will miss him,

an emptiness, a vacancy...but surely not 'nothingness'...we humans are able to give meaning to nothingness by means of language...a song being a special case. We all know that the 'nothing' in that chair where a friend should be is much more than just empty space...

we can joke..(and it is fun to play with the words)..but those two lines above make the point pretty well that we are almost never speaking of 'pure' nothing.

DW Ditty and Argenine, here are the lyrics you mentioned.

Is You Is Or Is You Ain't (Ma' Baby)
sung by Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters
- written by Billy Austin and Louis Jordan
- from the Universal picture "Follow The Boys"
- as recorded June 30, 1944 in Los Angeles by The Andrews Sisters with Bing Crosby and Vic Schoen & His Orchestra.

I got a gal who's always late
Anytime we have a date,
But I love her, yes I love her.

Mmm, he's gonna walk up to my gate
And see if he can get it straight,
'Cause he wants her, he's gonna ask her:

"Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
The way you're actin' lately makes me doubt.
You's is still my baby, baby.
Seems my flame in your heart's done gone out!"

A woman is a creature that has always been strange;
Just when you're sure of one, you find she's gone and made a change.

Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
Maybe baby's found somebody new,
Maybe baby's found somebody
Or is my baby still my baby true?

Is you or is you ain't my baby, baby?
Baby boy, the way you're actin' lately makes me doubt.
See here, who's been cuttin' me?
You's is still my baby, baby
Baby boy, it seems my flame in your heart's done gone out!
Oh, blackout

A woman is a creature that has always been strange;
Just when you're sure of one, you find she's gone and made a change,
And took my change.

Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
Maybe baby's found somebody new?
Maybe baby's found somebody--
Is my baby still my baby true?

If you could read my mind

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like and old time movie
Bout a ghost from a wishing well

In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghosst is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see

If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paper back novel
The kind the drug stores sell

Then you reached the part
Where the heartaches come
The heros would be me
But heros often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take

I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen to play
The scene of bringing all the good things out of me
But for now, love, let's be real
I vever thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone and I just can't get it back
(Repeat *)

But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelin's that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone and I just can't get it back

Now that the assembled 'Catters are on the search for these lyrics we ought to find something but if not, then Nil Desperandum we'll just admit we've drawn a blank
At least we've found some words to fill the vacuum, eventually we'll have enough for the hole song.

To quote Ringo (or at least the actor playing him in Yellow Submarine):
I've got a hole in my pocket; well, half a hole anyway. I gave the other half to Jeremy"!

I saw a copy of the record once. It was called
"The Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan"
You got it

It was blank both sides :)

Gurney, were you trying to make a pun on "O, Solo Mio?" I don't get it....

"O Sole Mio" means "You are my Sunshine," more or less ... which means you're right on target since that has nothing to do with the thread....

I believe Felix Mendelssohn wrote several songs without words. I suppose those were the lyrics requested. I don't care much for Mendelssohn, so I can't be much use, I'm afraid.

Ferrara, not being able to speak Italian, I've always read that in English, sort of.
I always thought it meant 'me alone.' 'Oh, Lonesome Me.'

I did mean to type 0(Nil, nothing) Solo Mio rather than O Solo Mio, so I was even more asleep than I thought I was.

I did manage to drive safely....

Nothing is better than a loaf. Half a loaf is better than nothing. So half a loaf is better than a loaf.

I'd post the lyrics you requested here, but John Cage has them copyrighted.
