I can't believe that Digital Tradition does not have the lyrics to this old Irish tearjerker. I have not been successful in finding it.

I promised the words to a friend, and will be soundly embarrassed if I can't find them.

Thanks.

Hi,

There are verses, which I can't remember. Here's what I remember of the chorus.

A mother's loves a blessing, no matter where you roam
Love (?keep) her while she's living, you'll miss her when she's gone
Love her as in childhood, though she's feeble old and grey (charming eh??!!)
For you'll never miss your mother's love 'til she's buried beneath the clay.

Maybe this'll help someone else remember.

Hi,

Here you go, found it buried in the middle of the "Mother songs of the tear jerker variety" thread.

A MOTHER'S LOVE'S A BLESSING
(T. P. Keenan)

An Irish boy was leaving,
Leaving his native home,
Crossing the broad Atlantic,
Once more he wished to roam,
And as he was leaving his mother,
Who was standing on the quay,
She threw her arms around his waist,
And this to him did say,

CHORUS
A mother's love's a blessing,
No matter where you roam,
Keep her while she's living,
You'll miss her when she's gone,
Love her as in childhood,
Though feeble, old and grey,
For you'll never miss a mother's love,
Till she's buried beneath the clay,

And as the years go onwards,
I'll settle down in life,
And choose a nice young colleen,
And take her for my wife,
And as the babes grow older,
And climb around my knee,
I'll teach them the very same lesson,
That my mother taught to me.

CHORUS

Thanks Alison. After posting my message I found the other thread, and found my song buried obscurely in the middle of it.

Glad you found it. It was the first song I learned from my mother. Mick Bracken

DeDannan recorded this on their Ballroom disc, if I remember correctly. Seems like there should be more verses, though.

I need to find a song and do not know the name but some words from the song from the late thirties. As I gaze up in the sky my story book says angels fly. If do I want togothere by and by, for when they told me you had died, I just hung my head and cried, for I knew I would be an orphan child.
