For those not aware of this morning's Rugby World Cup semi-final in Australia, France scored 7 points whilst England scored 24.

Therefore the merriment and joy!

England now meet Australia in the final next Saturday.

Good luck England.

Sorry, Jerry: English French and Australian stuff, this. I'mm afraid "Swing low sweet chariot" in this context is not the kind of spititual beloved of your God-fearing seelf. well, it is the same spiritual.but it it is used (with obscene gestures) as the English rugger anthem.

Despite the song title in the thread, I think this belongs in BS.
The same can be said of a team which gets through the quarter finals & semi finals whilst only scoring one Try.

Leadfingers, you are obviously new to Rugby. Welcome!

Whilst Wilkinson scored the points, it was others who made that possible.

Go and see a few games, learn a bit more, and welcome to the finest of sports!

Well the 2 most arrogant teams have reached the final. Guest thinks that what he saw this morning was rugby - take your own advice and watch a few matches not just England when you're pissed. Endless mauls - what the hell makes that the finest of sports?

Gala - I would not call the Australian's arrogant.

However that match has sorted out the problem of who to cheer for next week.

A pub full of Welsh, cheering Australia.

Hmm, must go and practice The Wild Colonial Boy erc.

Yes, Gareth, anything but "Waltzing Matilda." It's is possibly the worst thing Banjo Paterson ever wrote. I've had it right up to here.

How nuch chance is there for a country where a major national hero is a stock theif, bank robber, and murderer, and the national song is about the suicide of a sheep thief?

I don't think we're arrogant, either. I'm not sure that really applies to England, but they do annoy me when they try to say that what they are playing is good rugby. I hope we win on Saturday, just to see if Clive Woodward can be made to admit that somebody really is better than England. Be just too bad if we win on goal kicks.

H - my poseur phone plays "Waltizin Matilda" - Tho when questioned I refer to it as that traditional Kentish Tune " The Rochester Fusilier ". Perhaps you should put that in yer repetior.

I recall a world cup in the early 90's - England V (Either NZ or OZ, - forget) there was the bar packed with mellowed Welshmen and Women.

With one exception, my Brother in Law, cowering in a corner - Well he was birthed in 'Lunden'

No doubt we shall have a repeat.

Probably 1991 - England v Oz. The Aussies conned England into playing an expansive game, and the Poms couldn't do it, so they lost. That's why they will lock it up tight on Saturday. Clive Woodward is dislikeable, but I'd never call him a fool.

See various threads re "The Rochester Fusilier." It ain't traditional.

Well until the rules change and neither side can score from penalties, may I suggest we accept the status quo. the rules were the same for France and England and the result is valid. may I suggest the only arrogance is demonstrated by those who suggest a win is a win if it is done by tries-no matter what the conditions-total pish!

No disputing the validity of the result - but it did confirm why I've given up watching the "game".

Yes Gareth, "The Bold Fusilier" was composed by Pete Coe. Mind you I couldn't imagine him marching through Rochester when the "Sweeps" Festival was in progress and definitely not on a normal Saturday night these days.

Well according to one book I recently bought on Paterson, "Waltzing Matilda" was written to fit an old Scottish tune called "Craigilee", which he apparently heard played by one of the MacPherson sisters while he was staying at their station (Dagwood?).

The incident that inspired the song concerned a dispute between the Squatter (MacPherson) and some itinerant shearers, they set fire to a shed and killed 140 lambs. The Swagman, was apparently one Samuel "Frenchie" Hoffmeister, who MacPherson and the troopers 1, 2, 3 - Senior constables Caffrey, Dyer and Doyle. Hoffmeister jumped into the billabong and they did shoot at him, no body was found because they failed to kill him, he died a few years later and his grave is up in the Diamantina (sp?)

I think it is a great song - nothing wrong with it. The inspiration for my research into it was after listening to some utter tripe about the song having a chorus that has some twaddle about carrying a water bag that Paterson the auther never wrote and about the original tune being an old Irish Air.

Back to the Rugby - Poor losers you only have to suffer for one year. The fact England won by doing what they had to that is the game it is decided by how many points you have scored at the end of the game - how you get them is immaterial. Anybody watching that game who says that it was not exciting has got to be crazy. Those drop goals were absolute peaches - if memory serves me correctly three Australian 'pundits' predicted that that was how South Africa were going to see off England in their pool match - they all thought that that was perfectly alright - what's the beef now? That England did it. My guess is that the Wallabies would have liked to have seen any other team up against them in the final.

I will definately be looking forward to watching the game next Saturday - and as a Scot, I'll be cheering for England, they've worked hard and prepared hard to get there - I sincerely hope they do it, while at the same time I would advise them to have a read of Nelson's Prayer.

All this carping because England didn't score a try against France on Saturday! If it had been any wetter, they would have had to play water polo instead.

If building your team's score with penalties and drop goals is so easy, why couldn't the French chap do it, too? Kicking an oval ball in pouring rain and swirling squalls of wind with the accuracy that Wilkinson achieved is positively awesome. However, he didn't do it alone - Rugby is a team game, unlike that other variation of football where 22 overpaid, under-educated, inarticulate prima donnas mince around and consider it a good result when, after 90 minutes of kicking a (more predictable) round ball, neither side has scored!

Hi Lanfranc,

Have you heard the following song that Hamish Imlach used to do -

"The History of Football"

From Ireland there came a band,
Hundred years ago they say.
For the birthday feast o' the Clan McLeish(sp?)
The band was booked tae play
They wore green hats, green spats,
green coats a think
The thing they weren't sae green on
Was the sharin' o' the drink

Clan Chief McLeish was very pleased
When he took tae his seat
For it was said his wife had made
A special birthday treat
He wore blue plaid, blue braid,
Blue kilt a suppose
The only thing that wasnae blue
He never blew his nose

The guest's gasped when at last
the birthday treat was finally brought
On great plate a steamin' great
Dumpling - Piping hot
Well they grabbed it, stabbed it
But the dumplin' stayed intact
Till a fierce McLeish no too pleased
gave it a hell of a crack

The fiddler caught the dumplin'
And wi' an Irish roar of pain
He cursed and swore then once more
Kicked it back again
It went up and doon the banquet room
40 wide and eighty lang
Kicked between McLeish's men
And the Irish Ceilidh Band

Well their anger changed tae laughter
When they saw it could be fun
But their laughter changed tae anger
When they thought the wrang side won
Still they play this game today
But they've changed the rules somehow
Wi' eleven dumplin's on each side
And the ca' it football now.

I once played for a side that won many a match "off the foot".
No shame in that. If the opposition plays so sloppily that they award penalties inside their own half, then they can be assured that a good marksman will make use of the opportunity. Some sides defeat themselves. I've been on sides that have lost matches the same way. The Rugby Gods are angry and capricious gods...
