Brian McNeill's 'Scots Women' CD

In a recent thread about incest songs I mentioned a recording produced by Brian McNeill (founding member of Battlefield Band, and Scottish folk musician extraordinairre) called Scots Women. I though that this record was quite worth mentioning in its own thread.

I relaize how important this collection has become to me over the year or so I've had it, and thought that many of the Mudcatters who appreciate the roots music, especially Scottish folk, would really also love the record.

Brian and freinds gathered a 16 Scottish folk singers and produced a live show, recorded it and created the CD. This is a varied and rich collection. I hope those Mudcatters already familiar with the CD will speak up in this thread. And those who are not, I hope you'll at least take a look at the link above.

Barry Finn, please note that the woman - Alison McMorland - from the Press Room session at the Portsmouth Maritime Music Festival this year who had you enraptured is top left of that page Jed linked to.

Sounds like one heck of a CD, Jed, and I hadn't heard of it before. Thanks!

If I only could only have one CD, this would be it.

I only wish to hell it was called Scottish Women as Scots is such a horrible adjective.

I would have thought that 16 Scottish women could have affected that title...maybe no obe told them till it was too late...

Whether or not you like the title - the double CD itself is just great, not least for a rare appearance on 'adult' stage by Cilla Fisher - not to mention Sheena Wellington, Gordeanna McCulloch, Heather Heywood, Aileen Carr, Sheila Stewart and the fabulously giftes songwriter Karine Polwart.

This is one wonderful album - I had not heard of many of the performers, so it opened up a new world for me. The song by Stravaig, Ye Banks and Braes, sends shivers down my spine - beautiful.

agreed Chris - and another hauntingly beautiful performance is that of the song, "Time Wears Awa'"

My dear friend Jed sent me this while I was in hospital. I played it over and over again on the 20 hour drive. Absolutely fabulous CD, and it already one of my favorites.

Will be seeing kat tomorrow.

My guess is that, knowing the ladies on the album, they are all proud to be known as Scots Women. They are mostly Scots speakers and feel strongly about their Scots heritage. Why, pray, do you see "Scots" as a horrible adjective?

achh, Mick, you've been listening then have ya? You'll need to contact Brian now, and find a reason to get him to MI, maybe bring a Scots Lass or two to sing some of yer favorites!

He's threatened to make it to the Millstream to work with Paul and me in August. I'll send you the details, as they become available.
