Autoharp Cruise: Feb 7-12, 2004

...I had such fun on my last cruise, I decided to do the Autoharp Cruise, February 7-12th, 2004 on the Carnival Sensation. It sails from Tampa and goes to Grand Cayman and Cozumel. It should be a lot of fun and lots of autoharpers are already signed up. I do believe that other instruments would really increase the playing opportunities and the diversity. So why don't ya'll come?

Here is the website to get to the 800 number to call Cruisewomen.com.: http://www.mlag.org/cruise.html
to sign up for The Autoharp Cruise!!!

love, harpgirl

Don't you need to lash quite a few together before you get sufficient boyancy ? - and do you paddle them or stick an outboard motor on the back ?

I'm sure that if anyone wants to try a melodeon cruise, LtS will be willing to offer the neccessary construction materials (from Manitas' collection).

give us a few more details...
price etc.
i went on a ship trip once
but it was a smaller, sailing
vessel. (which i would recommend)
the giant, floating city, diesel
steam ship is a monster and not
conducive to folk music as far as i can tell.
check out Star Clipper ships.
more like the smaller "barefoot" cruise

...lash them together Dave, after removing the strings! I prefer hoisting a sail myself!

One really big bodhran should do the job. Let's see... fifty-two people at ten square feet each is 520 square feet... and the formula for determining the radius of a circle with an area of 520 is 520 divided by pi over or times something or other... where we gonna find a 520 square foot piece of goatskin? That's a big goat!

Hey, you people!!!! The cruise is up to 60 musicians!!! And we don't all play just autoharp. Everyone I know plays at least three different instruments!!!!

There should also be some concertinas or bagpipes to assist with pumping out the boat when it springs a leak.

is just a portion of the ship allotted to the music bunch?
hard to imagie the carnival cruise line filled to the brim
with folkies! is there on board entertainmemt already scheduled
(not including the auto harps et al) and is there a time
when you all will be featured as entertainment for the whole
boat? i hope yo have a good time. When i went on a sailing
boat i hung out in the lounge and played guitar and sang.
there was a guy on board whose job it was to entertain in
the lounge at the piano. luckily there was a guitar on board
(not a very good one) and i was glad to play it!

Dear Mudcatters,

I am counting down the days until we sail, which will be next Saturday!!! Our first port is two days from Tampa: Grand Cayman (below Cuba), where there is a bank on every corner. I am taking the snorkel, mask, and fins I use in the Flori-DUH springs so I can look at fish and rocks and coral under the deep blue sea!

I hope I get to play and sing with Eileen Koslof, to harmonize with Karen Mueller, and to play Carter tunes and bluegrass and gospel with the Hollingsworth's from Virginia. Our stateroom has a window to the sea! I'm sending myself and my roomy from Kalamazoo, a basket of wine and cheese and nuts and fruit; (I'm taking the Mudcatters I know and love in spirit!!)

My bags are packed and I am taking four autoharps and a banjo. The fourth autoharp is down in Tampa waiting for me to adopt it. It is a diatonic C which was Gove Scrivenor's at one time. Mark Fackeldy has rebuilt it for me.

Our second port is Cozumel. I expect to roam around the Playa del Sol, buy a silver bracelet, and a silk screen tee-shirt with the Sun on it, and then go to the music store a few blocks east of the plaza to play with the owner, if he isn't teaching lessons on the classical guitar.

On board ship we will hang on the boat and play lots of music. With sixty plus in the MLAG group (Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering) music will be ubiquitous!

Nathan will be staying in the homestead. He is having a Super Bowl party tomorrow so I hope he will be partied out when I leave next Saturday! Otherwise I may not have a house to come home to!!!!

Wish me a Bon Voyage and if you want something from the Grand Caymans...

GET IT YOURSELF!!!!!!

love, harpgirl

Harpgirl is a persuasive sales person. I tried to get off work to go along with my hammered dulicimer, but we're operating in sort of a
"lock down" mode at present and the bosses ever so politely declined my request. It will indeed be fun. Just sory I won't be able to do it.

Have fun, Harpy. And enjoy that diatonic C harp. Gove's a purty good autoharpin' guy, so if it useta be his it's prolly a good un.

Thanks for taking us along, HG. That's very generous of you. When we get back, you'll have to give the report for us though. :-)

Well, I'm sailing in the morning!! Five days of rest and relaxation on the high seas!

Dale, I'll think about you! And Bruce, uh um, tell Gove thanks! I heard he thought this harp squeaked too much in the studio but I'm not concerned....Pete P thanks for the message on the other thread...and I wish Pat could go with me. I asked him!
