UK: Barton Sloop session to move again

26 Nov 03 - 05:21 AM (#1061199)
Subject: UK: Barton Sloop session to move again
From: GUEST,Skipjack K8

We have had to do some surgery to save the old Sloop session from dying, as it has not successfully survived the move from the Coach and Horses.

For those keen on UK pub session history, but not in possession of the facts, the Sloop Inn in Barton (sans) Upon (hyphens) Humber was the perfect location for a long-lasting and particularly successful mixed song and tune session that was eventually killed off by the outgoing PEL system, combined with landlord change.

Jo, the then manager of the Coach and Horses gave us a new home, and provided masses of really good grub, and the session's future seemed assured. However, she turned a failing pub around so successfully that the brewery allegedly bumped up the rent exponentially and she could no longer afford the pub. One of her last acts as manager was to find us a new home for the session at the George, and initially numbers held up.

However, the last few weeks has seen interest wane, and numbers have now dropped consistently below the level required for a viable session, as most bands have more members than we currently have sessioneers.

The concensus at last night's poor old do was that we had to move in order to attract some of our old regulars back, and that we had to find a pub with a PEL, and a sympathetic landlord who is likely to remain in office for some reasonable length of time. So we chose the Six Bells in Barrow Upon Humber, which is where we have had some cracking ad hoc Saturday night sessions, and subsequently the old Wootton session for the last several months. Barrow is three miles to the east of Barton, so shouldn't put folk off coming from near or far.

We also agreed that we would move the Barrow Last Sunday session to another venue, and that will hopefully be the Nelthorpe Arms in Brigg (aka Scanlons). That is still to be confirmed, and I will post updates as they happen.

I then called into see Jim in the Six Bells on my way home. There is a reasonably sizeable session room there that accommodates listeners as well as musicians (which includes singers!). He was delighted at the decision, and is up for seeing us next Sunday for the last of the Sunday sessions, and then again on Tuesdays in perpetuity. He will also provide some grub for the sessioneers, so please turn out in force to secure this venue as a long-term session.

See you next week!

Presumably - the Humber Bridge will be closed on the Tuesday evening to ensure the intelligentsia thread contingent from Hull will not be allowed to cross.

Having been one of the stalwarts at the George last night, I must say it's a pity to have to move again so soon. BUT the Six Bells is a welcoming venue and we have had some cracking sessions there. North bankers need not fear, it is only five minutes - or less - further away than the Barton venues. If this could become as good a home as the Sloop was, then it will all be fine. Wonder what the grub will be like...

feresh.

One of jOhn's other personas 9the one that spells correctly, constructs grammatically correct sentences and expunges 9s) admitted on Folkinfo that he didn't know where the Sloop session had relocated to. He does now.

First one tomorrow night. Shall we lure any north-bankers?

I'm afraid I'm going to be at Brid Spa, jumping around like a lunatic to melodic tunes as performed by that world renowned traditional folk group, Status Quo. Does that qualify as a sick note?

Subject: RE: UK: Barton Sloop session to move again
From: GUEST,Skipjack K8

.....Well, assuming you mean th Six Bells, rather than the Quo, it went bally well!

You would've liked it particularly, Juan, as there was a surfeit of pipers, two in fact. Ploughflyer brought one of his mates, a Thistle Dodger, who played them smallpipes you favour, and he's a braw player, too. Other'n that, it was a fairly small gathering that struggled to wipe out the truly excellent sandwiches that were laid on. It was a good atmosphere, and we were made very much at home.

So it's a runner, even if the bogs aren't down to standard.

Ploughflyer? - Thistle Dodger? - really, Greg, you've got to stop it, it will just send us all mad. Apart from that, it was a good session, and the place feels like home already. Let's hope the Barton/Sloop session (Barrow chapter) has found a long term home at last.

I don't effing believe it. The landlord has been at the Six Bells since Methusalah was a lad, and we move there as a long term bet. Tonight I was told that someone wandered in off the street and offered some ridiculously large sum to buy the pub, and BANG, he's leaving on next Monday. Quite where that leaves us is unknown. The good news is that the pub has a PEL, the bad news is worse, in that it is the same pub chain 9allegegly) that bought and subsequently threw us out of the Nag's Head at Wootton. We have tried to resuscitate the Sloop session. Is everyone agreed that we stop trying?

09 Dec 03 - 09:06 PM (#1068906)
Subject: RE: UK: Barton Sloop session to move again
From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull

No, dony stop trying!
there is plenty flok people in , this area,
maybe we buy a pub, some pubs is leese get sold for cheep, ie 3 or 4 tousand, we make a whip rouind , and every prople put monet, and but a good sessdion pub, and tell all the music people to go, i had this idea before, and i tell some people, like bassic, and smallpiliers, .
and if you get enought people, then we only haf to pay about 500 pound each, we wont make any money, but we get a goof session pub, and waht you exepect for 5 00 quid, we all put money, to makea folk pub, and them with no job, like basic, and littlepliers, do turns behind yhe bar there, and other people like me and you. [i could do tuesday, as my day off is tuesday], just see how many is interseded, =
like i said, we wont make loads of money, BUT we get a session pub, and every body share it, all do waht they can etc, ,maybe 1 person knows about bookpeepimg, so he does thsat, 1 person knows abourt, booking babnds, punch the hoese, cara etc, so he does thast, 1 person knows about the law, fire exits, etc [eric ET, does that, everybody does there good thing they good at, ie, i think you are a buyer for a animal feed company, so you do the buying, negotiate the best price, for drinks etc, every other people do waht they can, every ex sloop sessioner has certain skills, lets use them!
if a barton area pub lease is for sale at [for example £5000], we only need 10 people putting in 500 quid, we work for no wages, till its busy, then share any profits 10 ways, or reinvest it in the pub, booking acts, etc.
giving up is no good, thats waht giving up people do!
not sure if any pubs in the area are for lease, but we sould look at The Morning Advertiser, and Daltons Weekly.
I ran a pub for 6 months, bassic has loads of licenced trade experience, etc.
we will never surrender!

Just don't mention that you have ever been to, or heard of, the Nag's Head at Wooton. And do please keep us posted on developments, preferably in English. I'm trying to keep a reasonable listing for E Yorks/ N Lincs going on the YFA website, but it does seem to be a remarkably volatile area and I'm buggered if I can tell who most of those pseudonyms are. I suppose it's the usual Fen Country problem?

LOL Malcolm, and embarrasingly true! Sound advice, too, about not mentioning a previous defeat. You are doing a sterling job with the session listing, so here's the definitive list for North Lincolnshire as far as I am aware. Last Sunday session at the Six Bells, and until we are possibly evicted, every Tuesday at the Six Bells. Quite what happens down Grimsby/Cleethorpes way I am unaware

jOhn, please will you PM Malcolm with your knowledge of what happens on the north bank, and support the work he's doing on the YFA website. Thanks, mate.

Sorry to have missed last night's session - the fog kept me from venturing up your end (er...).
It's almost uncanny that everywhere this session moves to gets jinxed before many weeks have passed.Where's the old landlord moving to? Anywhere we might tag along?
Also, is not the last Sunday session to be held at Scanlon's Greg, as once mentioned - and if so would that be on for the 27th (day after st Stephens?)
Plan to be over at 6 Bells on Tuesday next but will check here first I guess!
Dáithí
Is that Goxhill session on tonight? - might head north if the fog clears.

Hiya Daithi. The old landlord is going to curl his toes up in the sun,and he doesn't want us on his beach. Secondly, there was a sentimental backlash at the last Last Sunday session to keep the session at the Six Bells, so I guess we just turn up next Tuesday and act normally. Ho Ho.

Beverley, I need immediate access to the whelk pens and there is simply too much folk music in Beverley's pubs. One can hardly get a game of darts in the East Riding for all the banging, twanging, squeezing scraping and bawling; let alone the issue of house prices. I think I'll stay put.

When Mr Benson fires up his old autolave, we can scrape a large quantity of a nutritious meaty snack-food from our roofs and windows if the wind is in the right direction. We call it "stringy grey butter".

I had a midnight call from the bogus Muslim cleric last evening to tell me that Jo from the Coach & Horses is being linked with the Six Bells, in that she will allegedly be installed as manager. This may be conjecture on the part of the people concerned with pub management issues in North Lincolnshire, but if it does turn out to be true, at least we have a friend at Court.

Lee - landlord of the George, Barton - told me yesterday as we were sipping fruit juice together (alchol is an abomination of the infidel) that he had it straight from the Coach and Horses ex mouth Jo, that she was to move in to the Six Bells, Barrow on Monday. I understand that she bought it! That would surely secure our future there. I suppose I could check this out along with Skippy on Monday evening (a daytime visit is out for me as I am due to visit a mosque in Scunthorpe).

Allah came to me in a dream last night and said that KJ was about to reveal in stark detail Skippy's facilities. Be ever vigilant. It's going to come about. I can feel it in my water.

Gordon, thank you for the kind offer of the Admiral, yet again. May we see how the Six Bells session progresses over the next weeks, and revert on this if it bites the dust.

I'm sure there is enough north bank support for the Admiral session anyway, as we seem to tempt few enough to pay the ruinous bridge tolls these days, so why don't you go for it anyway. We will mount occasional cross river raids to support you, by publicising that the Six Bells session is cancelled for those particular weeks.

Did you not know, jOhn? It's one of the filips of the peace dividend that one can pick up heavy armaments at ridiculously reasonable prices, and rather than dabble in gun crime, I am purchasing a Panzer in which to go out drinking in Barton, and then warn anyone who starts somthing that I'm packing heat.

What a simply dreadful night and morning. I was just settling into some tunery at the Six Bells, when the worried face of one of my offspring was pressed against the pub window. Wouldn't you know it; Me chimney was on fire. House full of hysterical women demanding to call the fire brigade, who changed tune when graphically told what the colateral damage to the house entailed. And incidentally, why are they called Fire Fighters? Shouldn't dustmen be called Refuse Fighters? Or the polis Fighter Fighters? I withdrew the fire, took out the flue between stove and chimney, stuffed the flue hole with a wet towel, and eventually regained the Six Bells to find my flock engaging in Pop Music! Honestly!

This morning dawned with an blossoming abscess, so it was down to the tooth doctor short order, who prescribed extraction of the chap above the abscess. After deep injections, I swear that Doctor Mengele had their boot on my jaw to get more purchase. The anaesthetic was useless, the pain extreme, but there was no way that mother was coming out, so I am now anti-b'd and drugged beyond the eyeballs, with gums in tatters, no booze for the next five days, when the next assault will take place. That in turn guarantees more anti-b's over Crimbo. Deep joy.

I suspect I will be instantly eviscerated if I suggest such an outing, MR, but I might try the old brother-in-law needs a pint routine and slip over.

jOhn, where are you when I need you? I have just paid £20 to nestle my poor aching head in the bosom of my fragrant girl dentist, as she held me tight as I moaned and wriggled until the stubborn molar was ejaculated. And to think I could have swapped that for a general round your gaff, with complimentary drinkies, and saved £18.

Yes, it was braw session last night. Good to see Jo installed in mine host's chair, and some feeling of permanence creeping back in.

I echo the above sentiments, though I was only there part of the time. I'll be there next week, hope loads of us will be. In the meantime the very heartiest compliments of the season to all my folking folk friends, may 2004 bring us all plenty of tunes in D, G, A etc. with the odd Bm and Em thrown in. Invitations to the old place have already been given out, do come on Christmas morning for some smoked salmon and Bucks Fizz. Or whatever you fancy...

Anybody know if the Tuesday night session at the 6 Bells is on tomorrow night? Haven't been for a week or three and would hate to drive 40 miles to sit in an empty pub devoid of your stirling company.

This one's a rave from the grave, Daithi!

Yes, we are still going strong apart from one week of nil attendance and three hundredweight of the usual excellent grub laid on by the lovely Jo. Mental note to let her know when attendance is likely to be thin, but it was just that we all thought the others were going.

I am going to that Scotland tomorrow, but should be home in time for tea, so hopefully see you there for more of the excellent same.
