Subject: Lyrics needed- THE CALL
From: Ron K

I'm looking for the lyrics for this Gene MacLellan song. Parts of it are...

It's a long distance call and I feel so alone here without you, It's a crime and a shame... Mister can you find it in your heart to lend me a dollar..

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Ron

THE CALL
Gene MacLellan, 1976
As sung by Anne Murray

It's a long distance phone
And I feel so alone
    Here without him.
It's a crime and a shame
That I ain't got the change,
And don't you know that I'm worried
    About him.

I've been all over town,
Every street, up and down
    Looking for the man.
He's just a face in the crowd
Where the traffic roars loud
But don't you know, he'd be proud
    To give a helping hand.

CHORUS: Mister, can you
Find it in your heart
To lend me a dollar
For the times have been slow
I'm fresh out of dough
And I ain't got the money to call him.

I threw my pride out the door
'Cause I've been turned down before
    But I'll keep trying.
This kind of pain
Is kind of hard to explain,
But the feeling's the same
    As like dying. CHORUS

You put the change in my hand.
You're the world's kindest man,
    And I thank you, sir.
You'll never know what you've done
For this poor mother's son.
A thirsty man just got a
Cold cup of water. CHORUS TWICE

Now that must rate as one of the worst lyrics I've ever read. Is the tune as bad?

It is bloody awful.

"Now that must rate as one of the worst lyrics I've ever read. Is the tune as bad?"
"It is bloody awful."

You idiots have no idea what you're saying. Since you've obviously never heard the original, you have no right to criticize it! The tune is fantastic; the song is poignant. Replace the word "him" with "her", which was the original version; it was changed from "her" to "him" because it was written for a male singer but recorded by Anne Murray.

If you ever heard the original, by Gene MacLellan himself, you would see exactly what I'm saying.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Think! before you speak.

Imbeciles!

While I don't share my friend Bruce's (Peace) "bloody awful" I don't feel that it is MacLellans masterpiece. I'll take "Put Your Hand In The Hand" over it any day and I am not at all religious!

Snowbird is still my favorite. Never cared for Gene's voice but his song as sung by Ann Murry was fine by me. Ron Hynes wrote a touching song about the passing of Gene titled "Godspeed".

Gene MacLellan was a Canadian legend, almost forgotten now. Fred McKenna was another. Gene's singing of Put Your Hand in the Hand was well done, CFRB used to play his version a lot circa 1970.

Yes, churchgoing people still teach their children to pray - but when you're anonymous and ask a question like that, people wonder whether you're trying to stir the pot or something.

You really need to log in. I've had to delete a good number of your non-music messages, and I was tempted to deleted this one. Anonymous music messages aren't allowed, either - but we don't ordinarily delete them. But for regular members to be posting anonymously on a regular basis, is a violation of trust.

Quite evident these clowns have no idea who Gene MacLellan is. One of the greatest lyricists ever. Check out John Gracie doing his Born With A Thorn In My Shoe on YouTube. Awesome.

I remember during the 1960's that Gene put out an album and it had alot of the songs on it that you folks speak of...his voice was one of the most unique and smooth in quality for the era...he had a really unappreciated career by the popular music industry and public at the time...it would only be fitting if the CBC or some other music entity in Canada paid tribute to him...he seems to have been a "behind the scenes" guy that was admired by songsters and musicians alike from that era...truly a gifted songwriter who has passed away and it seems so has his music....most unfortunate indeed.

In life Gene was a tortured soul who was perhaps unable to accept his greatness. As a performer he kept his stuff simple in the 60's folksinger style, but he was a great songwriter! His songs launched the career of Anne Murray but Gene stayed low key, but he did perform on Singalong Jubilee and Don Messer.
However the acorn falls close to the tree and his daughter Catherine is causing a stir in folksong circles.

Gene MacLellan was one of my favourite singers. I had an eight track tape(kind of ages me)that was almost worn out.
Does anyone have the lyrics to Pages of Time?

His rendition of George A. Young's lovely hymn 'God leads his dear children along' is fine also.

Gene sold 80 million copies of his tunes -- Anne Murray sold under 20 million records so far. Gene's career was about 25 years, Anne's continued for more than 40. Only a handful of artists have ever gotten anywhere near Gene's commercial appeal and ~no one with any credibility in music circles~ has ever tried to equate Gene with "commercial artists" -- a folkie from birth to tragic, untimely, heart-breaking, death.

Pages of Time
(chords are guesses based on distant memory and lower case is base runs if you'd like that -- I think Gene has some finger wizardry going on in there)

(e f# g#) A                      E
If I could turn back the pages of time
                                           A
If I could bring back the love that once was mine
                           A7
And if the crying that I do
      D               B
Was a pathway back to you
E                                     A
Surely I could turn back the pages of time

--> Bridge

             E
The pages of time have built a wall
A
So wide and so tall
B
I can't break through
   E
No matter what I do

   (f#) (g#) A                   E
If lov - in' you was a key to the past
                                     A
And happiness was a thing that could last
                         A7       D               B (Bm?)
And if the crying that I do, was a pathway back to you
               E                      A
Surely I could turn back the pages of time

--> Bridge x2

(there may be another verse -- but most of his tunes could be sung in under 2:00 as was the custom of the day for high rotation radio play -- and the thought-density of his lyrics made long ballads moot anyway)

Ahhhh... oh my... oh dear. I am sure there is a good explanation... maybe 999 doesn't like the tune? Jaysus! Calm down eh? Everyone knows Gene was a master of the trade. As for GUEST, anyone who doesn't sign it's name is a troll. Hey!... it's Friday night eh people?

Yeah... I DO know. I am just morphing contemporaneous reality dudes and dudettes. It's Friday night... and I have been hyperventilating shovelling SNOOOOW in a 90kph wind. Refreshing is a pleasant description of my experience. Must listen to that master on YT now. Cam yer nerves eh?
