There is a song by Tommy Sands called "The County Down" on his CD "Beyond the shadows".
Maybe that one?

The liner notes say "It was written by the great singer/songwriter Tommy Sands from Rostrevor in Co. Down".

I suggest buying the CD, kilshannig -- it has the printed lyrics.

Cheers,
Michael

Lyrics posted by Guest, Sandra in this thread. There are several other Tommy Sands songs there, too.

Enjoy!

COUNTY DOWN
(Tommy Sands)

When you're out walking, and there's no one near you,
But a voice keeps calling and you hear your name,
It's not the leaves or the whispering breezes.
It's me that's calling you back again.

CHORUS: Oh can you hear me? Oh can you hear me
As you roam through lonely London town?
When evening's falling you'll hear me calling,
"Come on home now to the County Down."

Do you remember the fiddlers playing,
The songs and stories the whole night long?
'Tis little then that you thought of leaving.
It seems so strange now that you are gone.

(CHORUS)

The fish are dancing on Clanrye River.
The teams are sporting in old Glenvale.
My heart no longer can lead the cheering.
When you're not playing, it's a different game.

(CHORUS)

I'm always thinking that things are changing,
And that they're building a factory tall,
And young ones needed again in Newry,
But I still need you the most of all.

The band is playing the song in "A" but I'll give you the Key of G chords and you can capo at the 2nd fret or wherever to match your vocal range.

First a verse....
          C G       D       G
Do you remember, the fiddlers playing
      D       C G         C          D
The songs and stories, the whole night long
            C    Em       D          G      Em
Tis little then that, you thought of leaving
             C                G       D
It seems so strange now, that you are gone

Now the chorus....
            C   G               C   G
Oh can you hear me, oh can you hear me
       C    G    D Em      C       D
AS you roam through lonely    London town
                C G             D       B7 Em
When evenings falling    You'll hear me calling
         C    G Am7         D      G
Come on home now    to the County Down

That's what I hear - ENJOY this beautiful song

Sorry about the alignment of the chords. Move the whole chord line so the last chord is over the last word and it should work...

Heard a translation of this into Irish recently - worked well, too.

I have been looking for the dots without any success so far - I am not very good at learning tunes without them!

The words above are not quite right above.
In the chorus the last line is "Come on home to the County Down." i.e. there is no 'now' in it.
In the final verse, the first line is, "I'm always dreaming that things are changing," i.e. 'dreaming' not 'thinking'.

Here is Danu's version: Muireann's voice just blows me away!

Muireann is Ireland's finest singer now, IMO. Heads and shoulders above those wispy, girly voices so popular.
