Radriano and Chanteyranger band name

21 Jan 04 - 10:53 PM (#1098458)
Subject: Radriano and Chanteyranger band name
From: Peter Kasin

Radriano and I are stepping out as a sea music duo, having been rehearsing weekly for the better part of a year. Now we're looking at a stage name. So far we've put our fogged heads together and came up with....

Floating Seamen
The Whaleboners
After Berth
The Monkey Nuts
The Windbreakers
The Doldrums
The Heaving Rowboat
Slimy Joe and the Squarehead Man
Aw, Frigate!
Muttering Tides
Schooner Or Later
Two Sheets To The Wind
The Manspikes
The Drowning Sailors
The Afore Players
Broad Reach
Seamen Gobs
Flotsam and Jetsam
The Seafaring Strangers
The Jolly Pumpers
Hard On The Wind
Draggin' Anchor
Tainted Seamen

Alright, 'Catters, any other ideas? (Can't wait til what Spaw might come up with).

Chanteyranger

of your list the Schooner or Later stands out for me!

these come to mind, though they may be quite lame:
the Deck Swabbers, Ba Ta La Rum, Shiver Me Timbers
brings to mind talk like a pirate day..is it sept. 19?

glad to have met you both at camp harmony!

Aarrrggghhhh!

Fore and Aft

Forty Two Singing Seamen (The stricken forty to be part of the name)

Sail Away

One in Every Port

I'll bet you guys sound great together; can't wait to hear you!

"Schooner Or Later" must have come from Radriano, the compulsive punster. I have to admit I like it - but I think maybe I should feel personally insulted by "Slimy Joe."
Whatever the case, it certainly is a pleasure to hear the two of you sing together.

Maybe, Mudcat's rejecting my suggested band names:

What a great list and a great challenge!

"Flotsam and Jetsam" has always been one of my favorites.

I would steer away from any name that includes "sheet" or "seamen," avoiding nervous giggles.

Then, let's see, what other names surface or sink:

The Sea Slugs (nautical punk band)

The Afterguard (those who serve on the poop deck)

Roll & Go (sorry, that one's taken)

The Dog Watch ("This chanty group should be curtailed!")

Catspaw (Spaw should like this one but it really means a breath of fresh breeze on a calm day)

The Bilge Brothers (worst one yet!)

Shanghaied (sorry, already taken by folks in Portland-West)

Bucho Mates (another pair of bruisers to be paired with their female counterparts "Bosum Buddies")

Let's not hurry this process. We're just getting warmed up. Maybe we'll even get a song out of it.

Cheerily,
Charley Nobles and the Ignobles

Good for you guys!

Sorry, Brass Monkey(s) and Dogwatch are taken (although, Peter, you could always name your band "Dog Star" so the three Bay Area nautical bands would be Dogwatch, Starboard Watch and Dog Star -- that has a certain appeal to my twisted mind).

But seriously, folks...

Heart of Oak
Stout-Hearted Men
Red Right Returning
The Sailors' Rest
Ketch as Ketch Can
Hullaballoo Belay
The Bosun's Whistle
The Duck Jibers
Slumgulleon
The Downwinders
Master and Commander
Compass Rose
Kelpenhorn
Scurvy Crew
The Poxy Doxies (but you'd need gender changes)
The Ship's Biscuit Occasional Orchestra

...I could do this all day, But I'll spare you. Have fun -- hope to be invited to the bandwarming!

Claire

Albatross!
Rum'n'Biscuit
Sea-Change
Port Out Starboard Home
Steerage
The Mossbacks
Strange Cargo
Kraken
Chambered Nautilus
Frutta di Mare
Maelström
The Keelhaulers

Ancient Mariners(CT)
Starboard List
Main Brace
Forebitter

Some others to consider:

Mal de Mer
Two Bitts or Too Bitter
The Flukes (the pointed ends of an anchor or the tale of a whale)
The Flakes (coils of line or chain)

I do like "Doxie Poxers"

Flotsam and Jetsam were taken by a punk group years ago,

but "Keelhaulers" sounds promising. "Sea Slugs" or maybe

the more scientific version "Nudibranchs". Another possible

choice "Sea Stones" was a Grateful Dead spin-off record,

but the name may still be available for a musical group. More:

Cannery Row

All Washed Up

Drift Would

Land Lubbers

Star Pfisch

"I'll ask Tad" is a pretty good name, if I say so myself. I made a few suggestions to Chanteyranger the other day, some too rude for family viewing. Others that come to mind:

Handspike Hash
Belaying Pin Soup (suitable for those fans of Downeasters)
Pierhead Jump (maybe better as a song name)
Marlinspike Men
The Topmen
The Focsle Freaks
Bully and Bucko
Poor Ole Horse

Hmmm

If not "Blue Peter", how about "Salt Peter" or the "Guano Boys"?

So many fine names! Each nominee should be assessed carefully over a can of grog.

On a whim I just went to Altavista's English-to-Italian translator, which translated "the Leghorn foghorn" to "La sirena della Livorno."

Oh, I like "Oosiks". Especially if you do a sesh up at Specs in N. Beach, where they have one (or used to), behind the bar, for clubbing patrons who aren't drinking. By the way, how about "Clubbing with Seals"? (You get the Jack London/Sea Wolf thing there).

"Bay City Rovers" might sound a bit to much like "Bay City Rollers". Chanteyranger may have to keep reminding people its not a tribute band.

"The Flakes" would certainly be appropriate, but I'm afraid most people wouldn't get the nautical connection...

"Bilge Brothers" works well.

I can hardly wait to see WHERE you're going to be getting gigs with names like that.

Still like "Chantey-Ano" but then there's:

"Full & By" (steering as close to the wind as possible)

"The Barbary Coasters" (should also go well at Specs)

"Shanghai-Lows" (sounds like an early acapella rock & roll group)

"Deep Six" but you'll need to add some members

Too bad there's already been a "Donkey's Breakfast" (WA) although the name may be retired.

Now I've been saving this one for a really special nautical group, harvested from the Patrick O'Brian sea novel series:

"Kicking up Bob's-A-Dying" (what the sailors are likely to do after going ashore in Sailortown)

May work better for a nautical dance band. Oddly enough I can find no reference for this phrase in my web searches, other than it's frequent use in O'Brian's novels. I suspect it may be the colorful name of a traditional country dance tune that caught his attention while he was doing his background research.

Ahem! I think we will be perfectly capable of choosing a name for ourselves. This whole process started out as a joke at the SFFMC New Year's Camp. I've enjoyed the chuckles and must admit that some of the questionable band names came from my own demented sense of humor.

In fact, chanteyranger and I have decided on a contest. Whoever can reach the top mast yard first gets to choose our name. But please, nobody say anything about the hog grease, okay?

How about just "Port & Starboard"? You could be dressed in red and Radriano in green, or the other way around. And at pub sessions you could light up at appropriate intervals. Of course you'd have to remember which side was which, and whether your brow was the bow or your stern...BG
