What a great surprise in my mailbox today!! Went down through 8" of snow (plus 1/2" of ice) to find...."Too Far From the Shore" - the Boarding Party's third (and alas, final) CD. Thanks to Sandy & Caroline Paton, to Bob Hitchcock, to Nancy King, Dave Diamond, KC King, and of course - many thanks and farewell to Jonathan Eberhart.

Tom, you beat me to it! I was waiting until I was reasonably sure you had your copy before making the Big Announcement.

A few people had copies of a preliminary version Sandy rushed out for Jonathan's memorial service, but this is the REAL DEAL! Remastered and complete with notes! I feel like a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Come one, come all -- get your copies from Folk Legacy today! It's great!

Cheers, Nancy

The Boarding Pary combined the genius of Jonathan and the considerable talents of Bob Hitchcock, Dave Diamond, KC King, and our own Padre, Tom McHenry, to take the genre to a whole new level.

My favorites on this album are Rolling Down to Old Maui, Drifting Too Far from the Shore, and 100 Years on the Eastern Shore. Jonathan's Solar Privateer will always haunt all those of us who took science fiction as our talisman in our youth, as, I believe, did he.

You have two choices with this wonderful singing:

Sing or weep.

Doesn't seem like the website at Folk Legacy has this CD listed. Guess I have to call the 800-number.

That's the right answer, Charley. Sandy's a bit behind in updating the website, but the CDs are available. Besides, when you call Folk-Legacy, you get a bonus -- a conversation with Caroline! Give it a try, Dani!

Dave, The Boarding Party is not actually "still together." They haven't done any performing for ten years or so. Jonathan's illness, Tom's career and location change, and several other factors combined to bring their performing days to an end. Jonathan passed away last February, Tom is now an Anglican priest in southwestern Virginia, and KC is living in New Orleans. Bob Hitchcock and Dave Diamond were both original members of the group, but left it quite a while back, though they both appear on this recording. They are both still based here in the Washington area. "Too Far From the Shore" was actually recorded a number of years ago, and a whole bunch of other circumstances, which I won't bore you with, caused the interminable delay in releasing it. Part of the problem involved getting the album notes (an important part of any Boarding Party recording) written, a task which fell to me when Jonathan became too ill to do it.

Anyhow, it's done now, and it's really fine! I hope you all will enjoy it!

Cheers, Nancy

We're building an entirely new web site, folks, with the "shopping cart" ability to collect your orders automatically. The new Boarding Party CD is there -- right up at the top. Try going to www.folk-legacy, which means "just add the old Folk-Legacy hyphen. We're still trying to work out all of the kinks, but it seems to be functional now. I've already received a few orders from it. Take a look.

I got mine!

It's such a beautiful package on the outside that I've been afraid to open it. But I did and its as grand on the inside as it is on the out.

Bravo Zulu to Nancy, Bob, Sandy, Caroline and the Folk Legacy crew for making it happen. The web site IS a knockout.

The N.O. Quarter Shanty Krewe, the Big Easy's burgeoning shanty singers, will be planning a release party at which time we'll order a boxcar (or maybe a sea chest) load.

On to "Fair Winds"! KC

I looked at the new site today Sandy, and it looks great. I am sure I could fill up a shopping cart with all the wonderful stuff there, however my budget might have a problem with a huge order so I'll just have to pick out a few.

It's just great to see this project finished after all these years, I think the first recording sessions started back in 1990 or 91 which might be a record (pun intended).

Anyway, I hope lots of people get to hear this album as it does represent some important scholarly efforts on the part of the group. Oh by the way, the song "Down the C and O" which I wrote, has no copyright on it so anyone can use it with my blessings.

Thank you, Nancy! And to all concerned with getting this CD out. For me, I'm sure it will be a case of sing and cry, but I'm glad that those songs have been recorded, and that the quality of the information that goes along with the music is high. Jonathan would be proud.

I have the first Boarding Party CD, "'Tis Our Sailing Time," and it's fantastic. Only it's kind of funny-looking: sort of largish, and black, with a paper label on each side, and it's quite a job to fold it so it fits into my CD player. At least it comes in an environmentally-friendly cardboard case...

Aloha,
Mark

Got mine! Boy, those Folk Legacy people sure know their customer service ; ) A joy to do business with.

It's wonderful fun! Great especially to hear Dave Diamond, whose singing I have massively enjoyed at Getaways. He probably thought I was some kind of wierdo, sidling up nearby anytime he started a song, but I can't help myself. He puts such tremendous feeling into a song, as do all these singers.

Thank you, all, for another musical gift. Nancy, have you heard of six degrees of separation? You are now somehow connected with more of my most beloved recorded music than any other human being! Used to be Bernice Johnson-Regan. This one put you over the top.

Refreshing this for Sinsull.
So Mary here's more info.
Mary sang this recently at the last Portsmount (NH, USA) Press Room shanty sing & I gracefully (I hardly survived me choking her, until she finally agreed) asked if she'd sing it next. I can't remember if Mary gave me her copy but she said it was from the Boarding Party & I don't remember when it was 1st recorded by them.
Any thing new on this?
Love
Barry
