27 Jan 04 - 08:28 AM (#1102456) Subject: Mike McGoldrick - 6 Feb, Beverley From: GUEST Beverley Folk Festival puts NU-ROUTES back on the road The UK's leading young musicians take new acoustic and traditional music on the road once more Mike McGoldrick, Ed Boyd, John Joe Kelly & Rachel Unthank Friday 6 February 8.00pm Beverley Leisure Centre, Flemingate, Beverley Tickets: £10 / £8 (see below for contact details) In November the Beverley Folk Festival joined the innovative NU-ROUTES project, funded by the Arts Council of England, to encourage small-scale promoters to be more adventurous and take greater risks in their programming, enabling a fresh approach to the performance of folk music. Two tours have already taken place with twice Mercury Award nominee Eliza Carthy, and Radio 2 Folk Award winner John McCusker. In February the third tour in the series will be launched, featuring the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Mike McGoldrick with Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly, both members of a UK band Flook. Mike is a legend in the Irish music scene in the UK, being one of its busiest Irish musicians. An accomplished flautist, bodhran, tin whistle player and uillean piper, his love of Irish music — fuelled by his Irish parents — flourished in Manchester's thriving Celtic music scene. By 15 he'd already won various All-Ireland Championships on a selection of different instruments, and has since moved on to win BBC Radio 2's Folk Award for 'Best Instrumentalist'. Having performed in many bands including Flook and the Kate Rusby Band, he is now one of the leading musicians in Scottish super-group Capercaille, as well as fronting his own band. Supporting the band will be the young singer Rachel Unthank steeped in the traditions of the North-East of England.
