So sorry, this is my 2nd thread today....LOL! But I will be The Fiddler on the Roof in our local Community Theatre production. Performances March 19 and 20 in the evening, matinee on Sunday March 21. Perfs also on March 26 and 27, evening. Never done theatre before, this is grueling. Come see me make an ass out of myself on the Big Stage...LOL!

LOL! No, Tevye is the father of the 3 girls...I am the fantasy figure. And yes, I'll be heading across the pond 2 weeks after the last perf...I'll be ready for a vaction by then, I'm sure...

Good luck with your show, Sorcha. This is the sort of thing that makes me really wish I was not so far away and could travel all over the world to see what other mudcatters are doing. Oh well, maybe one day.......or maybe you can come out to Oz some time and meet some of us downunder.

Back in the 70's I was the "sound tech" for an amateur operatic production in the Marlowe Theatre Canterbury UK. A wonderful show. Packed houses for 7 nights. Happy memories

We opened with the fiddler actually sitting on the roof of the house!

Most "Fiddler" productions I've seen have an actor faking it on the roof, while a violinist plays from the pit. You'll do the production proud! Break a leg, but not by falling!

This merely confirms what I have suspected all along, not only about your fiddling ability, but about certain supplemental anatomical features-- because this venture takes two of the all-brass. Then, on top of that, I am sure you will play this as the sexy female I know you are-- confounding everyone's assumptions about who/what such a fiddler would be. Since, as you point out, this is a fantasy fiddler-- do be sure to give proper attention to securing the correct lacy/racy undergarments to inspire you to new heights! Of fiddling! :~) You will enjoy these at the cast party!

Ethnically this also makes sense-- you certainly are endowed with sufficient chutzpah!

Making your own costume, too? How about a dusting of cosmetic glitterdust on the fiddle?

Theatre is great fun -- I almost set fire to Dracula once.

Try not to slide off the roof, though. The last call of the fiddle as the fiddler slide sidewise does nothing for the production, nor does the "THUMP!" that follows.

Ah, yes, I spoke to the Set Manager yesterday about that damn roof....and I don't yet know just how we're/I are going to do the opening prologue....film was Issac Stern and Issac I ain't....faking fiddling is harder than just playing it! My right arm gets mucho tired!!!

Well, ya see.....I ain't never memorized any of it....now, I have all this other stuff to memorize, and let me tell you, 'memorize' is different from 'learning' a tune....is for me anyway. Having trouble visualizing a music stand up there on the roof...

maybe there is one of those music holders that clips on to the scroll head--they make 'em for clarinets and such in marching bands! Will you be able to video the production? We all should have a showing of the video (with popcorn) to take to mud cat gatherings! Will you have to wear a hat with those dangly long jewish sideburns? Or are the characters Hassidic(sp?)?

Trust me, photos WILL be taken...no,the Anatevka people were very Orthodox, but not Hassidim. They were in Poland, and Eastern Europe.

I played Tevye many years ago and actually had to explain the significance of the line "Today I am a .... Horse" to the producer - it's a joke on the the Bar Mitzvah declaration "Today I am a Man".

A few years ago my older son Stephen (a drummer - even drummers have mothers) was playing in the pit for an amateur production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". Jesus made a grand entrance from the back of the hall carrying the obviously very heavy cross - through the hall - up the stairs to the stage - nearly dropped the cross on Stephen. He would have possibly been the first drummer to go in such a way.....?

Have fun Sorcha! I was in amateur theatre a thousand years ago - we had a great time.

Well, I do call myself the Deaf Lady...not totally deaf, but very hard of hearing...and I don't mind the Deaf label at all. NO hearing in right ear, only about 60-65% of normal in left. Thank goodness that is the one under the fiddle. I play mostly by sympathetic vibrations....and lip read a LOT.

I didn't think I needed a whole separate thread, but tonight is opening night for our local high school production of Fiddler- and my daughter Maggie is the Fiddler on the Roof!

She decided not to audition this fall- she's obsessed with her through-the-roof grade point average. So she joined the building crew. Next thing she knew, they asked her to be assistant stage manager. Last week, it was like an old baseball movie- "Listen, kid, we really need you out there!"

So tonight she'll be up on the roof she helped build, sawing away on a fiddle with no strings as the pit violinist does her best. I can't wait to see her!
