Consider the lily they don't toil or spin But there's not a key with more spender than them Consider the sparrow they don't plant or sow They're fed by the master who watches them grow CHORUS: We have a heavenly father above With eyes full of mercy and a heart full of love He really cares when your head is down low Consider the lily and then you will know 2. 14 Feb 04 - 02:15 PM (#1115935) Subject: Lyr Add: CONSIDER THE LILIES (Alice W. Brotherton) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Lyr. Add: CONSIDER THE LILIES Alice W. Brotherton arr. Somerset song. Consider the lilies; how stately they grow! They toil not, they spin not, no seed do they sow; Yet they bloom all the summer, so shining and tall, The father Who loves them takes thought for them all. Consider the ravens; who gives them their food? Who shelters their nest in the storm beated wood? Who guides the young sparrow? Who watches its fall? Their father in Heaven takes heed for them all. Our father in Heaven, Thy children on earth Than lilies or ravens Thou holdest more worth; O guide us and guard us, be near when we call, Uphold us, enfold us; we thank Thee for all! Cyberhymnal has a midi: Lilies There are many variations to this song; this one from Cyberhymnal is typical. I have heard it used as a bedtime prayer for children; perhaps the folk song on which the hymn is based, but I don't recall all of the words. Lillies (lilly) is an old spelling, now mostly obsolete except in dialect. The folk song versions would have had the 'double-ell'. I disagree with the statement in the second line (no seed do they sow) since I have grown several species from seed. Anyone with an old version? Please post. |

02 Oct 08 - 01:40 PM (#2455722) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Consider the Lilly From: Arkie "Consider the Lilies, they don't toil or spin" was written by Joel Hemphill who wrote several hundred other songs including "He's Still Working On Me" and "I Came On Business For The King". Hemphill performed with his wife Labreeska and his children for many years as the Hemphills. Quite a few other major gospel artists also recorded his songs. Consider The Lilies is one of those songs that should be around for many years; well written, meaningful words, and a beautiful melody. |

02 Oct 08 - 02:57 PM (#2455789) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Consider the Lilly From: GUEST,leeneia Good songs, both of them. Thanks. I think modern people spell it 'lilly' because they have seen the name of the famous pharm company, Eli Lilly, in print. =========== Once I asked my voice teacher why I had trouble saying 'lily.' She explained that there are two entirely different L sounds in English. One is in front of the mouth, as in 'like.' The other is in the back, in in 'old.' She told me to pronounce both L's in the front. It helps. I am convinced that the Welsh Ll as in Lloyd came about because people said the L as in 'old' and held it. Try it. |
02 Oct 08 - 03:15 PM (#2455813) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Consider the Lilly From: GUEST,leeneia Q: interesting about the old spelling of 'Lilly.' Actually that looks more natural. I can't think of any other words like 'lily.' But in the double-L school we have silly, filly, Billy, chilly and of course, willie-nillie. So why not 'lilly'? |
03 Oct 08 - 04:42 PM (#2456689) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Consider the Lilly From: Jim Dixon Lily is the name of the flower. Lilly or Lillie is traditionally a woman's name, short for Lillian. Of course there are some women named Lily also. You can name a kid anything you damn please, and make up any spelling you like. (At least in the US. I believe there are some restrictions in France?) Lilly is also a surname (as in Eli Lilly). Pointing out spelling problems like this is usually helpful, because search engines like Google won't find "lily" if you search for "lilly", and vice versa, and a lot of people don't know they should try more than one spelling. A lot of information on the web is posted by people who can't spell, therefore it's often a good idea, when searching, to try a "wrong" spelling even if you know the "right" one. |
