23 Feb 04 - 06:49 PM (#1122150) Subject: Lyr Req: Horace the Carousel Horse From: Carly My sister, who teaches preschoolers, asked me if I knew a song about a carousel horse named Horace who is very unhappy as he goes 'round and 'round, because he is always last. Someone saves the day by pointing out that, on a merry-go-round, the last horse could also be the first horse. This is the first time she has ever completely stumped me with a song request; I have never heard of Horace. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

HORACE THE HORSE (from Burl Ives) Horace the horse on the merry-go-round Went up and down, round and round He's been sad since the day he found He's the very last horse on the merry-go-round The music began and away they go High and low, to and fro Poor old Horace would always say "I'm the very last horse again today." How he tried and tried and tried But he just never could win. Horace cried and cried and cried 'Cause all the other horses were ahead of him Then came the day on the merry-go-round When Horace turned, looked around Then said "Gosh oh gee -- I'm the very first horse on the merry-go-round, The others are following me!" |

It has been many years since I last sang it. This is one of the songs I learned as a child and sang for my kids when they were small. It has always been a fun song to sing and listen to. Mike |

We listened to Burle Ives as children, but we did not have that recording (maybe I'm showing my age here!) The Getaway is a big maybe for me right now, I am having some unexpected expenses and my Getaway fund is dwindling. I'm still hopeful though. Say hi to Bruce for me. |

08 Sep 06 - 12:17 PM (#1830064) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Horace the Carousel Horse From: pdq Sorry to say, but this does not appear on any of the current CD collections of Burl Ives. Try this gentleman in New Your. He will make a CD or cassete for you custom order. About $14 for two sides plus shipping. He also has many MP3 files you can download. Kiddie Rekord King |
