Hi Guys,

I am looking for the lyrics to Carter's Blues recorded by the Carter Family between 1929 - 1938
Seems I can't find them on the lyrics list.
Would appreciate your help,
Thanks,
Bonnie

Bonnie I'll give you this link also, where I found the song. It has two other versions. Here
This site has a lot of bluegrass lyrics. Take care, Rustic

(Hi Bonnie!)

I first heard Carter's Blues in the early 60s by Kathy and Carol. In my mind it is still the best version.

If you still have my address ~~ it hasn't changed, drop me a line and I'll send it to you. It is already on mp3, I'd just have to dumb it down to send it by email. If you don't have my address, just send to my hotmail, dale8r@hotmail.com

CARTERS BLUES

As I woke up one morning fair
To view the fields and taste the air,
For to view the fields and the meadows around,
I thought I heard some mournful sound.
I thought I heard my true love say,
"Oh, do turn and come this way."
Yodel-ay-ee, oh-lay-ee, ay-oh-lay-ee.

You love some other; you don't love me.
You care not for my company.
You love some other, and I know why:
Because he has more gold than I.
But gold will melt and silver will fly.
My love for you will never die.
Yodel-ay-ee, oh-lay-ee, ay-oh-lay-ee

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

There is a flower, I've heard them say,
That can be seen from day to day;
And if that flower I only could find
To cure this aching heart of mine.
Yodel-ay-ee, oh-lay-ee, ay-oh-lay-ee.

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

So fare you well, my charming little love.
Oh, meet me in that land above,
And when we meet there in that land,
We'll take no more this parting hand.
Yodel-ay-ee, oh-lay-ee, ay-oh-lay-ee.

Sorry for taking sooooooo long about getting back to you.
Really do appreciate all this help here.

I am learning this song from a recording I have of Beverly Smith & Carl Jones who were teaching at Old-time Camp in Grotton Connecticut.

Dale! Long time kiddo
I've made note of your email address and will get in touch.
Would really like to hear that recording.

Many thanks,
Bonnie

I've forgotten the melody except that it was very haunting to me. Could someone please post a web addy or blue clicky where it can be played/heard to jog my old ears. Would like to re-learn it on my fiddle. Thanx PM

Meade points out in his discography that this lyric is related to 'Love Has Brought Me to Despair' [Laws P25] which can be found in the DT HERE. I have posted another version, originating from the singing of Berzilla Wallin of NC, in this thread CLICK.

I have all but half the last verse from memory. Can someone supply the missing two lines in the last verse? Thanks, Rick.

Blues

As I walked out one morning fair
To view the fields and to take the air.
To view the fields and the meadows around
I thought I heard some lonesome sound.

I thought I heard some pretty girl say
"Oh, my love, turn and come this way.
"You love some other, you don't love me.
"You care not for my company.

"You love some other and I know why:
"Because he has more gold than I.
"But gold will melt, and silver fly,
"My love for you will never die.

There is a flower, I've heard them say
That can be seen from day to day.
And if that flower I only could find
To ease this aching heart of mine.

And when we meet there, in that land
We'll shake no more this parting hand

Hi Rick,
At one of the sites Rustic Rebel linked to above, the last verse to what appears to be your version is:
So fare you well, my charming little love
Oh, meet me in that land above
And when we meet there in that land
We'll take no more this parting hand

Hi, Jeri,

Thanks for the verse. And, I saw Doug Clegg in San Diego in
February. He is alive and well and living in California --
Santa Barbara, I think, and sometimes Baja.

All the best,

Rick
