Problems with instrument lessons on CD

Eight or so hours ago I posted Charlie McCoy's "Beginning Country Harp" hoping to get some needed information--not to sell it. The CD that accompanies the book is one track, sixty two minutes long. The exercizes in the book are numbered, as if they are individual tracks, but they aren't. I think whoever programmed the disk failed to enter the track data. --seed

Hi, Seed - I found it by doing an "exact phrase" search for "Flying Harp Productions" at www.hotbot.com Click here. Interesting that it's Charlie's son who sponsors the Web site. I have a college professor brother-in-law whose Web site was designed by his 14-yr-old son. Of course, for all I know, Charlie's little boy could be 40....

G'day,
Making a CD with only one track is just laziness on the part of the producer. It saves preparing all the individual tracks. Having made quite a few CDs I'm very much aware of the difference. It's not very smart either - I bought a CD once which turned out to have one track. When I took it to the local FM radio station to play it on the folk music program it didn't get played because I couldn't cue the track I wanted to play.

Cheers,
Alan

Thanks, Joe. I tried a bracketed search but aol failed to turn up a match. I did get the site and Charlie's email address on Harp-L, from which I get daily stacks of mail on how much wind it takes (technically measured) to get various effects (great if you're programming a machine to play harmonica). --seed

I just got "Beginning Blues Harp" by Don Baker and it also has one track. It is worse than a tape, because you can't fast forward a CD to a desired location.

The best thing to do is to copy it onto a tape!

Alan, thanks for the note. It is really dumb on an artists CD which depends for sales on radio play. It is even dumber on an instruction CD whose users will want to play individual exercizes over and over without having to listen to the whole bloody CD each time. But I guess we all blow it sometimes (any possible pun unperceived at time of writing). --seed

Hi all,

I've had a similar problem on a CD for learning Middle Eastern drumming. Very frustrating, especially as there is a lot of introductory chat at the beginning which you only need to hear once, and certainly not every time you play it. I guess the other solution may be to copy it on a CD burner and artificially create breaks in the track. That way you would have the advantage that CD's have over tapes - immediate cueing to the right track rather than having to fast forward or reverse the tape.

G'day Helen,
That's definitely the solution. You need a wave file editor (to break it up into small chunks), a CD burner and a hard disc big enough to hold it all.

Cheers,
Alan

For the record, Seed. I didn't respond to your original thread because I didn't see it, not because I thought you were trying to sell something.

As a matter of fact, I am happy to learn about the McCoy book.

I'm hoping that McCoy or his publisher will react to my email and redo the CD and send me one. I also posted my complaint on Harp-L, which seems to pe bopulated (I liked it so well spoonerized as I originally typed it that after correcting it I returned it to its original form) by lots of very serious harmonicats, some of whom may know and have influence on Charlie.

Unfortunately, since I joined Harp-L, I have been bombarded with increasingly vast quantities of email not directed to me. I had 85 new messages today. --seed

I am interested in that book. Let me know if you get a positive answer.

Thanks,

Murray, I will definitely announce the availability of the new and better McCoy CD, both here and on Harp-L, as I am sure there are lots of people who would love it. --seed

hi seed, why dont you use MD recorder dubbed from your CD. MD is random access m-o disk player for music. hardware and media is cheap today as $200 for hard, $1 for each blanc media. it has a function called 'divide' , you can easily edit the title as you like. and it's very nice job on live recordings, though sound quality is less than DAT. easy to erase chat time between each live stage by above 'divide' function and 'erase' function. -takeo

takeo-san, good to hear from you. i hadn't seen you in the threads for a while. i've been trying to convince myself that I could afford a read/write CD, but there are so many other things I need more (Photoshop 5.0, for one; a film scanner for another; a good, easy website authoring program, certainly), and anyway, I kind of expect I'll McCoy will want the omission corrected, especially since it's known here and on Harp-l that the disk has that problem and people are unlikely to buy it knowing that. If I don't hear back from Charlie or his publisher soon, then I might try burning a CD with the stops in it; I'm sure there are dixk burners available here so close to apple land. --seed

hi again seed. yes, mccoy pub should fix the problem first of all. and MD is Mini-Disk and not a read/write CD, MD is another format not compatible to CD player. i agree that burning CD, that's CDR, have the same solution to this problem and save money. -takeo
