Any of you Catters used to to go to this Folk Music Cafe in the early 1970's?
It used to be run by Anne Marie Brandt .

'fraid not, although I went to Folk Fairport a few times around the mid 70s.

Didn't go to live in Amsterdam until 1976, so didn't get to that club.

Asked my wife who is an Amsterdammer, and she didn't go and doesn't remember the club..

Went to see Cilla Fisher and Artie Trazise in Diemen which was right by the old Ajax Football Club. Saw them in Scotland as well.

Only other artists I saw in Amsterdam were Status Quo and the Kinks.

The place was near the Main Police station not far from Leidesplein .
It pre-dated the Folk Fairport, where Martin Carter used to hang out.
Incidentally there was a thread asking where he was, but this is a long time ago so wouldn`t help.
I used to play at this club with a fiddler player Clive Collins more 1971/2 time - I think.
It`s a pity some soul couldn`t ask the question on a Dutch Site -let's see , but anyhow thanks for your replies.

Did the club change its name to the "Milky Way". That was opposite the police station (almost) and where drugs under control were sold.

The Milky Way, possibly the Melk Weig, I saw the Saw Doctors there in the late 80's they were played off the stage by the support band "Somebodys Brother" who I believe hailed from Bradford

No - the "Milky Way" was more towards the Leidesplein - I saw 4 Men and a Dog there approx 5 Years ago.
It was in the opposite direction - half way down the canal where the Police station is and definitely no drugs at the cafe.

Sorry can't remember the name of the canal

Kloppertje was near the corner of the Lijnbaansgracht and the Rozengracht. Closed in about 1972. The space was taken over by a man from Oklahoma called Bode and it became Bode's music inn. Clarence White played there as did Byron Berline and numerous other famous players as Bode was also a pretty big cocert promoter and put on concerts at the Concertgebouw with The Eagles, Flying Burrito Brothers, Stephen Stills/Mannassas etc.

Kloppertje was a great little club where all the regular suspects from that time were playing and hanging out. Bruce and Hugo, Clive Collins, Imor Byrne and Niall Fitzpatrick.

I used to go there and i have been working there a few times.
Bringing beers, no beertrays to the dubliners. I also saw there Melanie Ernie vann, and even Labi shiffre and many more dutch folksingers. I even went to Ireland with the winners of a talentprice.
With horsecars like cowboys. My boyfriend worked there at the bar.Leo
Later on anemarie went into fashion.

Yen, I was a guest there several times and I remember Ernie Vann too. I was born and raised in Amsterdam and loved the nice atmosphere there in places like 't Kloppertje. Ernie Vann had that "key song" Cocain Running 'Round my Brain on which he improvised with the text on the actual situation. You'd beter not be late in his show 'cause he made fun out of you while singing this song.

Fine Days, me, Anne Marie Brandt (owner) Clive Collins , Labi Siffre , Radio KRO , and numerous other talented US performers who were just "doing" Europe.
Happy days - glad I did it - instead of growing old saying "I wish I'd done it".

The Dubliners turned up twice whilst I was there - after doing a Big Concert hall gig - no airs or graces just very very pleasant lads / no edge - can I borrow your guitar for a minute?..... and just un winding and singing and playing stuff that probably wasn't part of the sets played at the concert
I also used to busk in the Cafe de Prins, Cafe de Westertoren, Het Witte Paard , all on the Prinsengracht and was many times welcomed by Tante Marie in the Jordaan (the Garden)- as were lots of people - she was a great lass - and I also learned to play the card game game Tuppe. I thought I was going to remain in my mid 20's forever.
Strangely enough - I'm going to sound like many a Politician !!! I never took drugs - never smoked dope or anything - I just loved Dutch Beer (apart from Oranjeboom) and I didn't realise until many years later that my "close" amigos were indulging in all sorts of "things " but there for the grace of God ...... Fabulous days

Wombat - nothing I wrote was shite - and as for the others - memories fade and they can't remember every tiny detail. Just a nostalgic trip

Hahaha! Wat mij betreft is de discussie gesloten.

Hi,

Actually, I thought it was called "'t Cloppertjen", but that doesn't change the happy memories some of you have.
It seems to have lasted 1968-1972-ish. Judging by Google maps it was Lijnbaangracht 160, close to the Lauriergracht and not far from the Rozengracht.

Bye,

Hi Mysha, you could be right about the spelling - my understanding is that no matter how WE spell it - it translates into English as " Door-knocker " - (near the Letter box) . Will THAT clarify, whether a "C" or a "K" ?.
Nice to hear from you

Betsy

Worked there in 1971/1972, and had the time of my life! Wonderful place and wonderful musicians! Dubliners, Labi Siffre, but also Bruce and a dark person in a white suit called Melvin Miracle. He played the piano and his version from "imagine" from John Lennon was great!!

Does any footage exist of any of the performers at this club?
Other then looking up each individual performer by name just curious if there was anywhere to find out if any filming was done that would show some of the performers that played there?

Just read your post. Is there any footage available anywhere to see your folk group from 1971?
