04 Mar 04 - 08:37 AM (#1129011) Subject: ADD: Calling On Song From: The Borchester Echo Quite a few here http://web.archive.org/web/20050313061045/http://www.shef.ac.uk/~tdrg/Links/LinksEngland_A_F.htm Also here's one from High Spen so particularly suited for rapper. A bit sexist though... Calling on Song
At the beginning of the dance it is the job of the Tommy to introduce the dancers and the dance to the onlookers. In our first set of figures he would do this by reciting the following words:
Kind friends now I pray give attention I've brought here five merry young fellas So noble, so handsome, so nice (pause for laughter!) So be quick bonny lasses and tell us Which of my five men is your choice
Kind friends now you've seen my five actors They mean to act up to their part They've travelled this world full of danger With strong hands and stout willing hearts Be calm lads, be mindful be steady You're fit to jump over the moon Now player I hope you'll get ready And play us a canny bit tune

04 Mar 04 - 10:26 AM (#1129078) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: calling on songs From: Malcolm Douglas Information available on the web is often unreliable and poorly documented (though the Traditional Drama Research Group site mentioned earlier is very good). You need to look at printed sources as well, since these (if they are any good at all) will provide proper source information and further references. Two very useful introductory bibliographies are available at EFDSS: An Introductory Bibliography on Morris Dancing Sword Dancing in Britain Bibliography If you haven't already done so, you should check the Morris Ring website as well. They have quite a lot of archive material there, though the site is a bit of a disaster in terms of navigation: http://www.themorrisring.org/ |
04 Mar 04 - 10:36 AM (#1129085) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: calling on songs From: Doktor Doktor We use an adaption of the pace-egging song - words are at http://beerfordbury.com/BBTWTA/stgeorgetxt.htm Its not at all "traditional" in the academic sense but it is in fairly regular use ..... PS wont qualify as anyones best friend on account of dreadful personal habits & general hairyness |
