16 Mar 04 - 01:21 PM (#1138317) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: McGrath of Harlow I couldn't find it - but I remember in the case of the Bridgewater Three, who were imprisoned for 18 years before an appeal decided they'd been wrongly convicted of murder, the Government tried to have a sizeable sum deducted from the damages they eventually received, on the grounds that, while in prison, they'd had been saved the cost of rent and food and so forth. The court threw it out, but it sound as if the same crafty bureaucrats are having another crack at someone else. |

They're to be charged B+B for wrongful imprisonment, theory being they've been compensated for years when they didn't pay for meals. I've checked the diary and it isn't April 1st yet. Unbelievable. |

16 Mar 04 - 03:31 PM (#1138459) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: Bee-dubya-ell It used to be common practice for bums and vagrants to intentionally get caught committing minor crimes as winter approached so they'd get tossed in the county jail and have someplace warm to live during cold weather. Today's "three strikes" rules have probably killed off the practice. First offense may still be 30 days and second offense 90 days, but third offense could mean years in prison. Bruce |

16 Mar 04 - 05:03 PM (#1138556) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: Eric the Viking The begining of this was passed by the tories some years ago. Where, if you were injured by a third party from whom damages, compensation etc was recoverable and you managed to obtain such. Then your employer was able to reclaim any sick pay and or other expenses that you had received from your recieved compensation.Pretty shitty stuff, since it would in the early days, wipe out any actual compensation for pain and suffering. However, lawyers soon caught on, and therefore claims for compensation escalated in the amounts persued. Of course, many of these claims only run into thousands, but consider the amounts paid out for libel etc-there is no clawback on things like this. (Maybe because generally only the rich are libelled) As usual it's the rich wot gets the pleasure. |

17 Mar 04 - 03:16 AM (#1138900) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: darkriver This is for real. I'm surprised that all you Brits can't find the threads. David Blunkett, the Labour Home Secretary, has proposed in the Royal Courts of Justice in London for the right to charge victims of miscarriages of justice more than £3000 for every year they spent in jail while wrongly convicted. The logic is that the innocent man shouldn't have been in prison eating free porridge and sleeping for nothing under regulation grey blankets. See the article here: We locked you up in jail for 25 years and you were innocent all along? That'll be £80,000 please. Worthy of Old Dean Swift himself. |

17 Mar 04 - 06:16 AM (#1138991) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: jacqui.c On the insurance thing - yes, emplyers can claw back wages paid but his has always been IN ADDITION to damages paid to the injured party who gets his full whack from the Insurer. Insurers now also have to pay the cost of hospital treatment - ove £400 for outpatient treatment and approx. £400 per day for a stay in hospital up to a limit of £10,000. There are moves afoot to make Insurers pay the whole cost of treatment which, in the case of a paraplegic, could be astronomical. Watch your motor premiums rise accordingly! |

Reminds me of the Chinese habit of charging the family for the bullet used to execute their (late) member! Some years back a relative who is a nurse said that non-essential travel in an ambulance was charged for. Emergencies were not, but calling an ambulance for travel to a medical or hospital appointment was a different matter. Recently I saw a poster in a Health Funds window saying their customers can pay $270pa to be covered for ambulance cover. sandra (healthy & staying that way) |

19 Mar 04 - 08:17 AM (#1140827) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: Strollin' Johnny In 1967 I got knocked off my Lambretta by a dog not far from Brigg .(and before you ask, yes THE Brigg of 'Fair' fame). I propped my Lambretta and sundry now-disconnected pieces of same in a farm gate and walked three miles to Brigg hospital where I got patched up with elastoplast and had a tetanus shot. I then walked three miles back to my Lambretta, tied the now-disconnected pieces on the carrier, and pushed it the eighteen-or-so miles back to Gainsborough. Started the push about 2 pm, arrived home about 10 pm. Several weeks later a bill arrived from the hospital for my treatment. It was £1-10s-6d in old money (about £1-52 in silly money). Inlation since 1967 has been at least 500%, so my £1-10s-6d translates to around £760, which makes jOhn's £45 for being picked up in an ambulance a snip. Just thought I'd tell you that. :0) JB |

19 Mar 04 - 07:36 PM (#1141339) Subject: RE: BS: Innocent people to be charged for prison From: GUEST,Thawed out now. In 1984 ish I was pratting around on a very understanding friend's Bonneville in Durham, on disused land near gravelly railway sidings. The inevitable happened and the back wheel slid, being only five foot four inches tall, I admirably grappled for control, thinking of his newly custom painted tank, and swiftly lost it. Ended up in casualty with the understanding friend, and a broken bone in my foot. As luck would have it the attending dashing young doctor who was also a Triumph fan took pity on me, and explained that you only have to pay if the motor vehicle is moving at the time of the accident. He wrote his report to say that I was merely sitting astride the stationary Bonnie and it fell to one side, thus injuring the now throbbing foot. The upside was I didnt get hit with a hefty bill. The downside was it snowed about 12 inches that night and I had to endure my journey back to London the next day riding pillion, with a pair of crutches under my left arm and my now balloon sized foot wrapped in plastic bags and scarves propped up on the same understanding friends thigh. Not a good way to travel. But better than a night in a cell, marginally. |
