Lyr Req: Susannah Gal

I'm looking for the version with the verses:

I'm goin' to western country now, oh Susannah Gal

and

Can't stay here if you don't shuck corn, oh Susannah Gal.

DigiTrad and Forum have Fly Away You Pretty Little Miss, but not these lyrics, which I've heard on an American Folk Collection CD

Thanks

Search out the Tommy Jarrell versions on the County Label Vinyl or CD

County is a great mail order firm with their own label: County Sales, PO Box 191 Floyd Virginia.

SueB,
Further to my earlier message, I'm now at home and able to check my shelves the song you want is on County CD-2702 Tommy & Fred, a wonderful album of Tommy Jarrell and Fred Cockerham, 21 fiddle and banjo songs and tunes. I trust that you will already be familiar with these guys. If not you have a treat in store. Many of the current "old timey" musicians were influenced by these guys.

In these old songs, Susannah is sometimes pronounced Suzy-Anna or Susan-Anna.

I found this at http://www.folkmads.org/westerncountry.html

WESTERN COUNTRY
From Dirk Powell, "Hand Me Downs"--Rounder CD 044

I'm going to the western country now, Susan-Anna gal.
I'm going to the western country now, Susan-Anna gal.

How do you make your living now, Susan-Anna gal?
Drinking whiskey and playing cards, Susan-Anna gal.

Somebody stole my little black dog and I wish they'd bring him back.
He ran the big pigs under the fence and the little ones through the crack.

Hitch your Logan in the lead and Morgan in behind.
I'm going down that rocky road to see that gal of mine.

Sixteen horses in my team as I go riding by,
And if I don't get no Susan-Anna, I'll know the reason why.

Thanks, Jim! Reading the lyrics you posted helped me to figure out what Tommy Jarrell was singing - on the American Folk Collection CD called Classic Old Time Music he sings them in this order:

I'm going to western country now...

Sixteen horses in my team...

Hitch the Logan in the lead...

How you make your living now...

He leaves out the verse about the little black dog, and ends it with:

You can't stay here if you don't shuck corn...

Appreciate all the help! Suzanne

I think it's "hitch OLD Logan in the lead, unless you know what a Logan is other than the name of a horse or mule.

I think you must be right - I can find a Mount Logan, and a loganberry, but no Logan by itself as a noun.

Does anyone know the history of this song?
Is it the same one that Henry Whitter called "Western Country" and the Tenneva Ramblers called "I'm Going to Georgie"?

You can hear this at HonkingDuck.com:

WESTERN COUNTRY
As recorded by Henry Whitter, 1924.

I went out to the western country and the weather was so dry,
Sun come out and [I] froze to death; Susanna, don't you cry.

I wisht I had some purty little girl to sell my peaches to,
But this old thing I got here tells ever'thing I do.

I wisht I had a nickel; I wisht I had a dime.
I wisht I had some purty little girl that I could call mine.

Someone stole my little black dog; I wish they'd bring him back.
[He'd] Run your old sow over the fence and the little pigs through the crack.

Thanks, I'd been trying to figure some of those lyrics out!
Does anyone know the origins of this song?

The Tenneva Ramblers song "I'm Going to Georgie" uses the same tune as "Susannah Gal", but has diffent words.

The “Logan” verse you are referring to is in the Surry County version of this song, which is referred to as “Susananna Gal”. The verse reads:

Hitch old Logan in the front and Susan in behind him
I’m going down that rocky road to see that gal of mine.

Logan and Susan are mules that you hitch to a cart. In the Roundpeak version of this tune, they say “Morgan” instead of “Logan”

Hope this helps!
