BS: Who do you mildly disapprove of?

From: Little Hawk

Okay. It has been firmly established that we are mature people here on this forum...too mature to hate anyone. And we're proud of it! But who...who do we mildly disapprove of? Whose presence would we regard as less than totally desirable? Who could stand to make some changes and improvements in their style, attitude, and basic nature?

It takes guts to admit you mildly disapprove of someone, but I am willing to take the plunge.

I mildly disapprove of Don Cherry's tacky sports jackets and high collars. I wish he would do something about that!

Next?

You know...I think that "mildly disapprove" is far too strong a term to use. I find that mildly disapproving of anyone severely weakens moral fibre and my worth as a human being.

I can't say I'm at all impressed with some of the so called comedy programmes we have on in the UK at the moment, but I do realise that my TV 'on' switch operates in the opposite way as well.

Not too fond of the school welfare officer either who thinks that Limpit has missed too much school (85% attendance since Sept). Pretty dammned good percentage compared with some of the children there!

Just about all Republicans, except, of course, the ones I intensely hate. And except an aunt and uncle of mine who are fine people. I just don't understand why they're Republicans.

Jay Leno. The humor in his monologues stinks. But I like "Headlines" and "Jaywalking."

Pornographers. I wouldn't try to shut them down, because I don't believe in censorship, because I don't trust anyone to be the censors. And I think non-violent, non-exploitative erotica has a place in society. But so much of it really is disrespectful to women, to the point where, in my opinion, it makes them look less attractive than they are in real life.

People who are snobs about language, music, art, whatever. It's OK to teach and promote standard grammar, for instance, but don't insult the people whose native grammar isn't standard. Feel free to promote whatever kind of music or art you like, but don't tell me that people who like the kinds you dislike are idiots.

If I could say that we disapprove mildly
With a tepidness dull to the touch
I'd politely scold the young and the childly
With a glance that is cool but not much
Found extravagance may, in moments of yearning
Exicte some small measure of angst
Or an unreturned call, just might be a spurning
Or a gesture of love gone unthanked
But mostly it's I, in this feeling by me
Mildly disaproving perfectionately

Some of these are more mild than others...

-Rolf Harris (A poor representative of his country, at least in my mind)
-Lloyd Grossman (NO American talks like that!)
- Janet Jackson (She has NICE TITS and should have stood her ground)
-Most actors who do adverts (unless they really do need the money, but who's kidding who?)
-The whole idea of "celebrity"
-People who don't clean up after their dogs..(this comes close to being "Strongly Disapproved" of)
-Politicians in general, and (Bush) not to mention (Cheney) anyone by (Ashcroft) name, (Rice) those who won't even admit to their own actions (Bush,Cheney, Rice, Ashcroft)...and yeah yeah yeah, this isn't the first nor last administration to be guilty of this. And the more I think of it, the more this last one should be under a different thread..sorry LH)

Salesmen. Specifically, salesmen who
- are too pushy.
- don't thoroughly understand the products or services they're selling, though they pretend to.
- are dishonest about their product's shortcomings.
- really don't care whether the customer is satisfied with the product.

While it's theoretically possible for salesmen to truly deserve the commissions they are paid, it seems that seldom happens.

I would like to make note that the following quotes that I used in an earlier post are from Winston Churchill.

"And, a preposition is a word one should never end a sentence with."
"This is a situation up with which I can not put!"

The first was a remark he made to someone who got too pedantic about English for his taste.

The second was scribbled in the margin of a letter that had been written by a bureaucrat in the War Office in the early 1940s. The letter was for soldiers, sailors and airmen. The fellow had so convoluted the language in order to make it grammatically correct that no one could figure out what the hell he was saying. That was Winnie's response.

It is neither mild nor strong, but I do disapprove of the Bush/Republican right haters. They have become as foaming at the mouth as those they hate are. And I seriously fear they will cost Kerry the election.

My Bush hating partner totally alienated our moderate, politically independent dinner guests last night, to the point that I fear they will vote against Kerry, just because they have become so disapproving of the foaming at the mouth hatred of Bush and the Republican right.

It's damn complicated this hating/disapproving thing, be it mild or vehement.

"Designer" labels on clothes. In fact, any brand names on clothing of any kind, such as Harley-Davidson. OK, if you're a farmer, you can wear a cap with a tractor company's logo on it, but only if the tractor salesman gave it to you free. And only when you're outdoors and you need to shade your eyes, or keep the top of your head from getting sunburned. Under no circumstances should you pay a premium for a visible brand name. Let them pay for their own damned advertising.

I disapprove of labels on the back inside collars of the shirts and t-shirts that I buy, partly because they frequently stick out, and partly because they are stitched on with that ghastly stiff synthetic thread that itches. They are hard to remove because the ghastly stiff synthetic thread that itches is clear, and therefore invisible. Grrr.

I mildly disapprove of digital clocks. They destroy the sense of completeness within a day and fail to exhibit the relative proportionality of blocks of time, both past and anticipated. Analog time is more holistic and inevitably brings us both closure and the promise of new beginnings and is in accord with the inevitable cycles of mother nature and the universe. Digital time is linear, military time and speaks by its very nature to a countdown preceeding an explosion. In fact, digital time has no capacity to express renewal and hope.

"I mildly disapprove of people who have to have mayonaise to make anything taste good."

As a former caterer/cook I wholeheartedly agree - I despise people who smother their food in sauces, chutneys, spices and seasonings before they've even had the good grace to taste it - people for whom a meal is not a meal unless it has a 2inch layer of tomato ketchup over it, or a salad isn't a salad unless the tomato slice is going under for the third time in a sea of dressing.

If you want tomato ketchup for dinner, I'll do you a plate of tomato ketchup. If you want salad soup, I'll do you a bowl of gaspachio soup, but for heaven's sake, find out what food really tastes like before you drown it in glop!

I'm not that fond of tomato in every salad either but that's another rant!

The design of most magazines. Here are my gripes:
* You can't find the table of contents without thumbing past 20 or so pages of ads.
* The table of contents, although it would easily fit on one page, is spread over several pages because it has to share each page with more ads.
* The titles of the articles, as shown in the table of contents, do not correspond in any obvious way to the blurbs on the front cover.
* The apparent relative importance of the articles as shown in the table of contents has no relationship to the size and apparent importance of the blurbs on the front cover.
* Even after you find the table of contents, and find the page number of the article you want to read, it's still hard to find the article because most of the pages don't have page numbers. (They don't want to mess up their beautiful ads by placing page numbers on them.)
* Even after you find the FIRST page of the article, you see that it says "Continued on page—" at the bottom, and then you have the same problem all over again.
* When you finally figure out how long the actual article is—the one whose blurb on the cover attracted your attention in the first place—it's often disappointingly short, and not worth the price of the magazine.
This is why I rarely buy magazines off a newsstand.
Come to think of it, my disapproval is more than mild.

Here's another neat thing to do with Gibson guitars: Remove the strings and the tuning machines. Build a cockpit in the sound hole and mount a mast from the bridge and saddle area. Install a rudder in the tuning head area. Add a keel on the back and a bowsprit from the end pin hole. Add sails and rigging. You now have a neat little sailboat which can be crewed by a trained guinea pig or manuevered by radio control, and that horrible plunking and twanging sound is gone too!

Well, I don't disapprove of anything except the phrase, 'mild disapproval'. Either get pissed off or don't!

Martin Gibson: Don't hold back!

Reminds me of a fellow who went to the Unemployment Insurance Office to file a claim because he was outta work. They asked what he did. He replied, "I'm the boss." They asked him to explain. He said, "I work in the sewer. I fill up a bucket and pass it to the next guy who passes it to the next guy who passes it to the guy who dumps it into the truck." They laughed at him and said, "And that makes you the boss?" He answered, "Yeah! I'm the boss. I don't take shit from no one!"

I once heard a comedian relate how in high school, he'd broken his leg, and how it was really hard getting around, and preventing him from achieving success with the opposite sex. He felt so sorry for himself.

Until he saw a man with two broken hands.

Bruce - No, nobody got hurt. Just a couple of fenders got crunched. The guy made a right turn from a stop sign and never saw me at all until a half second before I hit him...he heard my brakes screeching. Fortunately, I managed to slow the car down a lot before the impact, but there was no way of totally avoiding it...just not enough time or distance was available.

Martin - You having an identity crisis or something? Don't let those cheap guitar makes wear you down. :-)

Sorry to hear about the accident--but vehicles can be repaired. Sometimes it's substantially harder to repair the people. I am very glad you are OK. This is a much more vibrant and bright world with you in it.

PS Your accident reminds me that life is short and so I'd better say this today, now. Little Hawk, you are one of a kind and the craziest muther I ever met--even though we never met. Be good, buddy. BM

LH - that kind of acident can be a real shock, even if you're not physically hurt.

Over here, if the guilty party's Insurers pay up for the damage it doesn't affect the other person's cover but I don't know if it's the same over there - hope so.

Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate your concern. I hope we get to jam on a few songs sometime in this short but sweet life.

It turns out today that the guy had no valid insurance. It had lapsed earlier in March and not been renewed. He is not in a good situation, to say the least, and has been charged. I'm still just glad that no one got hurt.

This accident didn't shock me very much for some reason, but the other guy was pretty shaken. I am beginning to see why...since he didn't have insurance.

OK whose in charge here?

First of all, flattery is complimental, however I have not posted the last number of posts.

Second of all, it is obvious Taylor Takimine has got a hard-on because I have made him look so bad.

Third of all, I would never use the term "wanker" because most everyone knows I am from Chicago and we never, never talk like the ones from the lime. Taylor Takamine, you sir, or it, or whatever your unwashed self are, are a jagoff, which in case you don't know it, you green idiot, is pure red blooded American for wanker. Americans never use such stupid slang.

Fourth, of all, those who know me here, know I always post under the name Martin Gibson. Taylor Takamine is someone who posts only as a guest at his convenience, and uses other guest's names in the most cowardly way.

What a piece of drek Taylor Takamine is. The most sorry of all phonies who post here. The most foolish. The biggest JAGOFF.

Here's something that I think is just plain silly (it's not disapproval, more disdain at the silliness): The "home-y" type familiarity that people try to convey when introducing someone on a TV gameshow or in some company brochure or something: "Jim is married to Caroline" as if there is only one person called Caroline in the whole world. Why not say: "Jim's wife is called Caroline" ? Is this just me, or do other people get cross at this ?
(Maybe it's just me being at a 'difficult age'. I have plenty more where that came from, but I will spare you. Thank you all for granting me this Therapeutic Moment.)
