well, folks, the bobert was out in the lavedar bed today cuttin' 'um back for the upcoming season and somehow confuserated the tip of his leff index finger with lavendar.... like ouch... exclamation point....

so off to the local urgent care center, a tetnis shot, bout 10 minutes of fun while the nurse first cleaned, then held pressure on it to stop the bleeding...

so, looks like iz gonna be typing with little letters with the rest of the cool folks who do it.... but i gotta a purdy danged good excuse...

playing guitar is gonna be challenging but i have learned that injuries make me a better player so we'll see...

Bobert, you damned clumsy hillbilly. Stop this shit!! You are forbidden to cut off any body parts that affect your ability to play and sing until such time as I have had a chance to make music in your company. DO YOU UNERSTAND??????

That happened to me as well a while back and I asked the doctor if I'd be able to play the piano when it healed. He said "Don't be silly man...of course you will!" and I said "Oh good, 'cos I couldn't before....!"

...the old ones are the best...(aren't we?)

You weren't the one out playing with the chain saw the other day, were you?

I had a bosun a few years ago who had his hand resting on the combing up in the wheel house...when a gust of wind came along and slammed the hatch shut....it literally popped the tip of his thumb clean off...

This fellow had 20-30 years of experience and he didn't have the hatch dogged open...

Steve Kaufman encourages practicing playing, making all the standard "easy" chords, i. e. the ones you can make with 3 fingers, with the middle, ring, and pinky, leaving the index out of it. The idea is that when you get good at it, you can play anywhere on the neck, since you can use the index to hold down the string or strings that would be open in first position.

I've never tried it, but it would be something to mess with while you're healing.

Just a thought FWIW.

Wal it could be worse. I had a feller manage a steel hawser for me one time by sticking his fingers under it just as the tug on the other end took up the slack. That boy couldn't get his fingers out from under the wire, and when they finally severed from his hand he was able to roll over and faint, so he did that. We picked up the two fingers he'd lost and sent them ashore with the ambulance but it was no use. HE was white as a sheet when we got him ashore.

Hell, just the tip, huh? Grace o' Gawd it wasn't a lot worse, Bobert!! Mazel Tov indeed!!

OK, it ain't good, but it will heal and you will use that finger to play again. Chord hand? Because if it is, that will be a cast-iron SOB to deal with. P A I N.

Found myself grasping my own fingers as I read this. These tales always send shivers down my spine. If it was my finger it would be throbbing like the engines of hell.

Man, you're lucky, it COULD have been worse. But look after it all the same. Good luck!

Peace, Mooh.

I'll echo Dick Greenhaus's sentiment about slide guitar. Tune that Regal to open D, grab the Coricidin bottle and let 'er rip. And if ya get bored with that, slip one of those extension nut thingies on it, get hold of a Stevens slide (maybe you'll find mine 'cause it's damn well lost), tune it to GBDGBD and learn to play Dobro.

shoot, beedubyaell, iz spends most my time in open tuninz anyway... the regal stays in d tunin and with a capo on the second fret its in e tunin.... an' 'bout half i do is wid a slide so that part will be3 okay 'cept even when i'm sliding i pix lots of stuff mixed in so it will be interesting...

i have figgured out that my 1935 gibson tenor guitar going to get a lot more attention....

btw, speakin' o' tenor guitars.... i was down in fredricksburg, va. lass month an' stopped into picker's supply an' the owner, bran dillard, who loves messin' wid me went to his office a brought out a 1932 national tricone plectum-- tenor-- with the lilly of the valley motiff etched on the face........... drool......... he let me play it and i swear, that was the funnest guitar i've run into like, ahhhh, forever... i offered to trade him all my guitars, including my '64 d-18 martin, the gibson tenor, the reagal and half a dozen miscellanious beaters fir it.... he told me that they would serve as a down payment on the national and that he would send a thick payment book to me in the mail.......... now that's mean, mean, mean... he's always nessin' wid my poor head.......

And you'll notice that I am back to using CAPS. Ahhhh, okay, still ain't using the tipless finger but at least after changing the dressing and finding that bleeding has stopped I'm a little more comfy using the left hand... Shoot, I'll be bending guitar straings in no time...

But think Django Reinhardt. This could be the making of your technique.

Anyway, it'll grow back. From what I've heard you should end up with the same fingerprint you had before too. Amazing things bodies.
