crash... Down goes the Mudcat

05 Oct 98 - 12:33 PM (#40368)
Subject: crash... Down goes the Mudcat
From: Max

Hello all. Yes, we were down for about 4 days. We had a great crash that is going to take us another couple of days, maybe even weeks to clean up. Sorry. Things should be running at least OK now, but it may be shaky for the next couple of weeks. It just happened to coincide with one of our employees on a honeymoon, and another out for 2 weeks. So we're short on staff and doing all we can. Hang in there, and I will try to as well.

Max, you can't know how happy I am to have you back. Actually, you can, probably, because you got my frenzied emails off the link on the error message. Anyway, life without the threads is dreary, indeed. --seed

Gee, Max, it sure is nice to be back with you. All this time, I thought you were off drinking root beer on the beach and neglecting us. I shoulda known better. Hope everything works out OK.

Max--

I can reach mudcat through the mudcat.org site, but not through the "messages since your last visit site"; is that the cookie site that folks talk about. Please pardon my ignorance in asking. For the next few days, I reckon I'll just come in through the Mudcat Site to play it safe. I'm mighty proud that your accessible again.

Hey, great to have you back, and gosh, Max, that's a lovely offer, but aren't you married or at least in a long term primary relationship with your computer?

G'day Max,

Hey ... we didn't notice here in Australia. It was a long weekend (for Labour Day, Mon 5 October)) in much of Eastern Australia - and this is the Land of the Long Weekend!

Of course, to stuff that up, the Federal Government bunged on an election and, unfortunately, didn't quite lose office for their hubris.

Anyway, I was easing myself into Sydney's Spring weather by renewing acquaintances up in the Blue Mountains for 4 days and have just returned to the Big Smoke(it is Tuesday already here) hoping to catch up on 4 days of Mudcattery ...

Regard(les)s,

Bob Bolton

Max ... next time, can you send us a frantic email to let us know you're going down for the third time. I was getting a wee bit nervous there. Oh, and harpgirl, I, too, am waiting for Joe. I'll have my second call your second and we can duel at sundown. Jenny

Hi Max,

Great to have you & Mudcat back. Unlike Bob (speak for yourself, Bob :-) ) I've been frantically trying to get back in for the last 4 days and the error messages were getting more and more dire. The last one was that there wasn't a server named Mudcat - can you think of anything worse than that?

And Max, I suppose being in Oz disqualifies me from you offer, but.......

But actually, I was waiting for Alison's little ones to turn into teenagers so she'd run away from home and run off with me.

First off, Max, I will not marry you, nor even flirt with you, I am a man of honor, and have been hugged by Alison.

Secondly; Geez Joe, You got Harpgirl AND Jenny ready to dook it out, and you have to go after the only woman who has ever cyber-hugged me. All this because I made a few eensy weensy jokes about Como, Williams, et al.

Finally, and seriously, I am so happy that you have got it back online. I have been near frantic for the last few days. Maybe it is time for the rest of us who live and breathe Mudcat to consider making a wee donation for its sustenance. If those of us who are core constituents would consider a contribution of whatever could be afforded, it would perhaps help out. I know that Max, Dick, Susan will not make the plea. So I am making it for them. Post a snail mail address, and my check for $50.00 is in the mail.

Oh, and one more thing. Alison, check out the thread titled "YOU JUST GOTTA GET ONE OF THESE". Offer admits that he hasn't washed his tee shirt in 6 months. No kind of a fella for a class woman like yourself. :-))

All the best,

Mick

I'm so glad we're back on the same page again! My 95 y/o grandmother passed away Saturday and I'm in much need of the kind of warm humor that makes me smile to myself. This is truly what the Mudcat symbolizes to me. Thank you ... Jenny

Jenny,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. But 95 years sounds like a life well lived. Here's to your Grandmother, God be good to her.

By the way, isn't this coming weekend the getaway outside of Washington, DC? I hope you have fun.

All the best,

Mick

Normally I don't bother with the dirty stuff on the internet, but if any of you wanna see a picture of a hot babe making "beyootiful music" with a horrible monkey, check out the link Alan & Alison provided.

But seriously, if it is of any technical interest Max, my personal page is still affected, active messages I hadn't responded to are missing, and one is still there which I THOUGHT I had deleted. It's not important to me, I know who I still need to send a message to, but as I said, if it's of technical help.

Ahhh, Anyone know the Song of the Siren. Alison, I knew you had to be rua, and with a gorgeous face like a map of Ireland. I should never have hit Alan's link. "If I were a blackbird, I'd whistle and sing. And I'd follow the ship that my true love sailed in. And in the top rigging, I'd there build my nest. And I'd pillow my head on her lilly white breast."

Back to the subject at hand. I also am still not able to archive personal messages. After the crash, I have two active messages that were previously archived, that is prior to the great crash of '98.

All the best,

Mick

Must have been one %#$%&* of a crash. My archive also ends abruptly on Aug. 14th.
However, if that's the worst of it, I'll survive just fine, thanks.
Max, I worry that what caused the crash was that Dylan thread that was hacked (turned red). Is it possible we spread a virus from there, and as we jump back and forth between threads we spread it here?
Did everyone's archive crash, or just some of the regulars?
Blessings,
Barbara

Say, Babrara - I checked what turned the Dylan thread red and fixed it - it was just a misplaced font color command, and wasn't anything that should have caused a serious problem.

I think I fixed the archive. As for missing archives and messages to and fro, I am sorry, for now they are lost. It's going to be part of the BIG OVERHAUL (converting the whole ball of wax to SQL Server) before this can be completely imposible to happen again. Working on perfection...

The archive seems to work find now, Max. I had a dozen messages, and I archived a couple, one at a time. That worked find, so then I clicked "archive" on the rest of them, without waiting for each message to clear. That would seem to be the ultimate test, and it worked.
