Then I realized that The Shining probably beat Mel. Then I recalled a really whacko cult film where a guy kept trying to bury his mother who wouldn't die and the house was attacked by zombies. Anyway just like some one has to be last on a threead there has to be the bloodiest movie. |

It's an underground cult movie starring the young Ronald Reagan and the same chimp actor who played Bonzo, but he's older and he plays a character named Jock. Reagan plays a deranged alcoholic vet who mutilates chimps and other innocent primates and disects them for payoffs from Asian drug gangs who sell off various parts and extracts from the chimps for their perverted customers in the Orient who want to improve their stinkin' sex life! (Everybody knows Chimps really "got it", right?) What happens is, Jock gets mutilated horribly in the lab, but he escapes. He then starts hunting down the evildoers and vivisecting them one by one, aiming to finish up on Ronnie the Psycho Vet...the guy who lopped off his coconuts. The final scene is the bloodiest and most gruesome thing you'll ever see on screen. I loved it. Jock's glorious closing line: "And now, asshole, here's one for the Gipper!!!" Chongo |

(Many people have noted the similarity between ketchup and blood.) This is, in fact, my rationale for avoiding slasher movies. If I want to see ketchup, I'll go to the Heinz plant. |

The re-animator movies were also really, really gory. I don't remember the Shining being THAT gory, except for the "blood flood" which always looked like a Kool-Aid commercial to me. (But in terms of sheer gallons, of course, it WAS impressive). |

And I don't normally go for films that are full of graphic violence of that sort. I liked the satire and the point that the film was making about the exesses of American media. |

I read Peter Benchley's Jaws, and some time later (when the manager of my apartment building wanted to paint my apartment and I had to be gone for a few hours), I went to see the movie. Ye GAWDS!! Body parts strewn along the beach, a leg bitten off and sinking toward the bottom, blood gushing out of Quint's nose and mouth, and that scene where the shark crashes into the boat's cabin and starts snapping at Brody's legs. Even if it didn't get him, every time I think of that, I still try to put my feet in my shirt pockets! It wasn't long after that I went to see Alien, which was intense enough all by itself, but it was on a double-bill with The Fury (1978) directed by Brian De Palma. Had to do with a secret U. S. agency trying to gather parapsychological children and young people (telepathic, telekinetic, etc., like King's Carrie and Firestarter) with the idea of developing them into weapons. At one point, one of the young people (the lovely Amy Irving, I think) levitates someone, makes them start to bleed from various bodily orifices including from under their fingernails, and then spins them like a top, spraying blood all over the furniture and the walls. In another scene, John Cassavetes' head explodes, spraying blood, brains, and teeth all over the room. They didn't just show this once, they did about a half-dozen instant re-plays from several different angles. Yummy!! I'm not particularly squeamish, but I wonder if anyone has ever thought of putting airsick bags in a little pocket on the backs of theater seats, like they do on airliners. . . . Don Firth |

It is beloved to a select group of really cool people who really get off on the notion that most "straights" and boring people like that just don't understand it or appreciate it. If too many people get to like the cult movie, it loses its special status with its former fans and becomes mainstream. This is a real drag! To be supercool you have got to be outside the mainstream. |

Cult films are usually strange, quirky, offbeat, eccentric, oddball, or surreal, with outrageous, weird, unique and cartoony characters or plots, and garish sets. They are often considered controversial because they step outside standard narrative and technical conventions. Most cult films cut across many film genres (science fiction, horror, melodrama, etc.), although they can be very stylized, and they are often flawed or unusual in some striking way. They mention that Fantasia was considered a "cult" film for a while. I'd agree with LH that much of the appeal of cult films comes from perceiving oneself to be part of an enlightend "cool" community, but I also think many fans simply have a real appreciation for their particular favorites. As for blood, I'm sure I've seen people swimming in pools of blood in some film or other; more blood, but not as bright red as the elevator scene in The Shining. The grossest thing I recall seeing was open heart surgury on regular evening TV. Shudder. I lasted about thirty seconds before changing the channel, I never lingered again. |

In Fantastic Voyage, they shrink a submarine and it travels through vast tunnels of blood and plasma. Lots of gore in The Thing (1982 version). |

One scene involved a shootout where any where a bullet hit provoked a deluge of blood. Even the water tank and fence posts were not exempt. I turned on the television halfway thru assuming it was some western or other and hit on this scene. Hilarious! I almost threw up at the beach scene in Savng Private Ryan. |

I think he succeeded, too. Pulanski's Macbeth sucked, as has everything of his I've seen. But the play really is funny, anyway. Scream is a fun movie. |

A lesser known film called SERIES 7: THE CONTENDERS is one of the best i have ever seen. Check it out on IMDB, i have the dvd. its a reality show where 8 people are chosen at random every series and have to kill eachother.. the survivor wins. the entire film runs like an extended episode of the show, with the announcers coming in now and again to recap on what has happened so far etc. It's done really well and is very underrated, probably because the director intentionally chose unknown actors. |

It is a few years since I have seen it but I do remember it as being one of the bloodiest films I have seen. It is a comedy, very funny in parts, but also on the gory side. Come on, Platoon! The Doors! JFK--good god what a showy shallow fartbrain. What an enthusiastic businessman with absurd pretentions. He could search himself and his art for the sense of his subject, if he knew how, if he knew how to measure, if he even listened to his own self-indulgent artsy noodle-doodling, if he was an artist. Scorcese's movies are pretty good and bloody. They may not be the bloodiest per gallon, but it seems like more when you care what happens. Like the movie Traffic--except for the Mexican cop, and okay, the kids, anybody could be shot in the face and So What? Ketchup doesn't count, except in fun parodies. |
