"the Napoleonic ars"

Well, I don't personally know "Boney's Bottom" but it clearly must exist.

To be more constructive, put 'Napoleon' into the DT search box and around 20 more songs will come up.

Yeah well I tried to correct that, but for some reason it didn't take. Do you have to clear the thread and start over? Will someone help? If you know "Boney's Bottom" or would like to take a shot at composing it, I am probably desperate enough for new material to sing it... Though I might move it to the Comical Songs section.

Jerry Bryant has recently recorded a CD of sea songs from that period, "Roast Beef Of Old England." Dick Greenhaus may have it at CAMSCO. These are not necessarily songs about Napoleon himself, but English songs of that era, inspired by the Aubrey/Maturin series.

I wasn't sure what exactly was being asked for.
Do you want songs about Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars, period?
--Songs from every possible source and time?

Or do you want songs popular or created during that period?

If the latter, I guess the ever-reliable and -helpful Masato's got it...

Mustn't forget Banks of the Nile, which doesn't come up on the search!
Young Tradition did a splendid version (on Galleries?)
Related to High Germany, but set in the Battle of the Nile era

(Funny thing, about half of the (many) versions in the Bodleian library refer to COLD sandy desert on the banks of the Nile instead o HOT!)

'The Strangford Shore' is another Napoleonic love song (usual thing, about girl does the dirty on poor fella and gets married to someone else while he is off trying to make his fortune just to please her)

Strangford Shore

Being early in the morning, when the battle's din was o'er
And we sat down upon the ground amidst the bloody gore.
We'd lost the fight on that third night, our dead they numbered high
And the cries of pain drove men insane, as they rent the evening sky.

And weary then I knelt to rest, were my dead comrades lay
And I bade them all a sad farewell for brave they met the fray.
And I bade them all a last farewell as I leave this cursed shore,
For should I gain home, I'll n'er more roam, from Comber on Strangford shore.

Three days and nights the battle raged, the air did hang with death
And more than once I was forced to kneel and fight to gain my breath.
Few of my comrades from my youth did fight by my right side,
But on that second day under Marshal Neigh'e at Lign'eay they fell and died.

On July the thirteenth day we sailed, from Rockport we did embark
And three weeks later our journey o'er, I gained home as the evening grew dark.
I wish now to God that I'd been slain in some battle that I did fight;
Than to see the girl that I love dear, all on her wedding night.

When both very young we pledged a vow, no other we'd ever take.
The years flew past, we both held fast, all others we did forsake.
But I being poor, her father he frowned on me and he bid me go
And not return 'till her hand I'd earned and spangles on her bestow.

So away I went and three years I spent in France under Bonepart.
I bade farewell to all my friends and with her I charged my heart.
I worked my best for her father's request but alas I'm as poor as before,
Though a wealthier man, at last I stand, now I'm home on my Strangford shore.

So all young men here, I pray draw near and heed now to what I say.
And don't believe the female kind, or listen to what they say.
For I believed that she was true and I fought, her heart to gain.
From all the battles I'v fought, the lesson I'm taught is that 'Love holds the longest pain'
____________________________________________________________________

I hope you like it, it's part of my collection. I have another Bonny song, only it's pro Wellington. It's called 'Fallen Bonny'

We do a song concerning the Napoleonic wars that appears not to have been covered but is to be found in the Bodleian Library. It is "Elwina of Waterloo". It descibes how an injured soldier is tended on the battlefield by Edwina, a beautiful girl, and she subsequently becomes his wife and resides in "quiet contentment" back home.

Well, I knew I could count on the Catters! What riches. I do appreciate this. Thanks to all of you so much.

Somehow the collection by Frank Harte comes as no surprise, and I must have it (oh and I have birthday coming up in MAY!).

John of Elsie's Band, tell me more about your song, I am very interested.

I am also interested in Strangford Shore-- Eoin-- where do I find the tune?

Desert Dancer, I will check out that CD.

Macha, thanks for your suggestion.

I have to say that I don't understand my own fascination with these songs, but the ones I tend to collect are usually not the humorous sort (not that those offend me), and tend to have either a haunting melody, haunting words, or both.

This query was primarily about songs that deal with that theme, but I also collect songs about a range of themes including anti-war songs. (The Banks of the Nile is already there-- under the Sad Love songs section though it could go in other places-- the best songs are hard to catagorize.) Most of what I put into my book are the songs I sing myself or expect to learn, and I focus primarily on on traditional Celtic/British music. I arrange everything by theme, and I'm revising it right now, and wanted to add new material to that section. I've been collecting songs since I was a kid so my songbook has evolved a lot in 30 some years.

Right now I am celebrating my new harp and especially interested in songs suited to playing with her.

Walrus-- This collection-- can you give some background info-- I'm guessing it's not exclusively about the Napoleonic Wars.

Petr- yes I think that all wars have a lasting impression on the people who experience them-- and the songs are how we record that impression. No wonder so many deal with the sadness of war.

Folks can feel free to PM me too with ideas.

I think he got the lyric fragment from the Bod. Quoted in the notes to 'Unearthed', (Mollie Music MMCD02/03) Nic writes:

Described on the broadsheet as 'A new song - Buonaparte's escape from Russia', I added a few extra words, wrote a tune and called it 'The Warlike Lads of Russia'. This recording was originally on a compilation album the late Fred Woods brought out called 'The First Folk Review'. It subsequently featured on the compilation album 'Flash Company', recently reissued by Fellside in celebration of their 25th aniversary.

I've always been led to believe that 'Benjamin Bowmaneer' concerned the Napoleonic Wars.
'The proud tailor rode' etc...(tailors being 'figures of fun' in those days, presumably for sewing while real men did real work - but that's a whole different argument)...
The reference 'he spied a flea on his knee' I've been told
is a p**s-taking reference to Bonepart's small stature.
Anyone out there to correct or confirm?

French children sing a little march that goes:
Napoleon aviat cinque cent soldats
Napoleon avait cinque cent soldats
Napoleon avait cinque cent soldats
Marchents dans un meme tromp.

Which translates, allowing for my bad French and worse spelling Napoleon had 500 soldiers marching together in step. There's a second verse about Napoleon having 500 horses, also marching in step. Check with someone who actually speaks French. And forgive my spelling. I can't even spell in English.

"Wheels of the World" has a verse which goes:

Napoleon he was a great spinner, he freedom did always advance
O'er deserts and high lofty mountains he marched the brave sons of France
Bold Wellington he went a-spinning, his wheels they were at Waterloo
And if Grouchy* had never been bribed, the French would have split him in two.

*Pronounced in the song as though it were an English name. I believe the historical evidence does not bear out the suggestion of bribery, merely that Grouchy stuck to his orders when another course of action might have been more advantageous.

The Irish song "The Eagle's Whistle" is known as Bonaparte's retreat in the U.S.A. In one of the western states it is known as "Bonaparte's Retreat Over the Rocky Mountains", which is an interesting concept.
