Songs About Lawnmowers???? HELP!!

Subject: Songs About Lawnmowers???? HELP!!
From: JenEllen

I am in a bit of a fix.

A toddler who is very near and dear to my heart has had a love of lawnmowers since he could walk. Riding lawnmowers are the best thing this Earth has to offer. (He even swiped a lawnmower catalog from the Home Depot and that is his bedtime reading material---no good night moon, it's good night lawnmower)

This weekend we had a birthday party for a friend, and the little guy was 'helping' me put candles on the cake. I asked him if he was going to help sing Happy Birthday, and he said yes. I asked him to sing it for me, and he starts: "Singa songa lawnmower...."

I got to thinking on the subject, and for the life of me can't think of a SINGLE lawnmower song. I'm sure the lawnmowers would appreciate it, after all that they do for us, but I can't find a single one.

If there aren't any out there, can we wrangle a song challenge? I'd love to be able to have some lawnmower songs for singing around the campfire this summer. I've already taken liberties with the Buffalo Song (there were two lawn-mowers, etc...) and that seems to work okay.

Thanks all,
~JE

the only song I can think of is a 70s one (Genesis?) and a line which says:

"Me? I'm just a lawnmower, you can tell me by the way I walk"

but I don't suppose this is very helpful !

How about "Ride on"?

Wouldn't be hard to adapt Woody Guthrie's Riding in my Car to meet the situation:

Brrm, brm brm...(mower noises to tune)

Take me riding on the mower(2x)
Take you riding on the mower
I'll take you riding on my mower

Climb climb, rattle on the big seat
Spree I spraddle on the big seat
Turn my key, step on the starter/ TAKE....

And so forth.

There is a heavy metal band called Lawnmower Death ("Deth"?) whose lead singer is called Freddie Flymo. I don't know if that helps! ;0)

As I mowed out one morning in May?

There was Flymo, Bendigo, Gentry he was there-o

Strimmer is a-coming in and winter's gone away-o

As we go rollering home?

I can think of several with "rake" in, if that helps...

What about "one man went to mow"? not specifically lawnmowers - but no reason why it CAN'T be...

I'm riding my Toro, all over the estate
Got a big lawn to mow, boy, and I can't do it late
I'm climbing the hills and I'm down in the dells,
Got my foot on the throttle and I'm mowing like heck,

Get along li'l lawn-mower, cut 'em down low
The grasses and the dandelions are ready to mow!

Now Ol' Jed Horn, had Craftsman mower from Sear
But it threw up grass cuttings on his hair and in his ears,
He was covered with grass from his knees to his head!
So he got him a Toro to ride on, instead

Get along li'l lawn-mower, cut 'em down low
The grasses and the dandelions are ready to mow!

Now if I should die, don't tell anyone I died
Just rolll out my mower, make it ready to ride!
Put my bones in the saddle, tie the throttle dowen hard
And let me ride forever in that great Heavenly Yard!

Get along li'l lawn-mower, cut 'em down low
The grasses and the dandelions are ready to mow!

Add to suit...

Love,

A

The tune, if not obvious, is Get Aroun' Li'l Dogies.

Ya know this opens up all kinds of new challenges to adopt the old roping and wrangling songs to the suburban life.

Little Joe, the Ad Man
My Little Old Shopping Mall on the Plain
Oh, That Strawberry Smoothie
High-Chin Bob and the Root Canal

are a few that come to mind...

Come along boys, and listen to mah song
A~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~E7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll tell you of my troubles on the big north Lawn

E7~~~~~~~AQ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
A~~~~D~~~~~~~~~E7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

I fired up a mower, took the rope in mah hand
Fired up my mower to mow across the land

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

Now some folks want a mower that a man can push along
AN' some want a rider cuz it makes 'em feel so strong!

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

There's clouds in the north, now it looks like rain
And I'm out in the yard with a lawnmower agian!

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

There's weeds and grasses and flowers and shoots
And there's sprinkler pipes and stones and roots!

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

Now old Jim Stillson, he had himself a gripe
Cuz he rode his old Torus through a sprinkler pipe

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

Well, I've got weeds in my shoes and grass on my head
An' it's time to head the mower to the lawn-mower shed!

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow-mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

Come a row-row-mower-oh, mow -mow-mow!
Come a row-row-mower-mower-mow!

The Wild Lawn Mower
(tune: Been a Wild Rover)

I have been a lawn mower for seventeen years
I have mowed all the lawns that are far or are near
When the sun is arising, at the first light of dawn
I am pushing my lawn-mower on somebody's lawn!

And it's push, push forever! Push that lawnmower along!
For its pushing a lawnmower, will make you grow strong!

I went to a neighbor, who lives down the road
And I told him for a dollar, his lawn would be mowed
I have lawnmower, it is sturdy and strong
If you'll hire me on, sir, it will not take me long!

And it's push, push forever! Push that lawnmower along!
For its pushing a lawnmower, will make you grow strong!

A lady came to me as I was mowing away
And asked if her lawn I could mow the next day
It being fair summer, and the weather all right
I said I would mow her lawn all through the night!

And it's push, push forever! Push that lawnmower along!
For its pushing a lawnmower, will make you grow strong!

And now my good buddy, I will sing you good night
For the lawn is all mowed, and we've run out of light
So we'll roll the lawnmower, away to its shed
And we'll put it up safely, and go home to bed!

And it's push, push forever! Push that lawnmower along!
For its pushing a lawnmower, will make you grow strong!

Enjoy!! And a hug to the wee lad.

Amos-

Clearly you're not too old to cut the mustard, nor the south forty for that matter. Here's a little banjo ditty.

C------F-----C------G--C----C
Now he mowed up and he mowed down,
---------------G--F----------C
He mowed round and round and round,
--------F----C-------------G--C
If grass was growing on the o-cean swells,
------------G---F--------C
He'd be mow-ing there as well.

Now he mowed up and he mowed down,
He mowed round and round and round,
If grass was growing in the sky,
He'd sure make that mower fly!

Open Mike---you reminded me of his love of "Frinklers". The kid has wandered, MANY times, over his grandpa's acres of lawn, pulling out the in-ground sprinklers one by one (carrying them in his arms like a bouquet until he figured out how to pull the wagon) and then depositing them in your lap with an "I brought you frinklers".

MMario, evil it must be. What else would be adequate repayment for having a 4mo old yellow lab dropped in my life for a week? He's housebroken, thankfully, but that's about all his little neurons can handle. Everything else just wiggles for 18 hours a day. My cats are gonna freak...*bg*

Here's one my uncle used to sing. It's got haying in it, and ghosts. What more could a little tyke who's into mowing want?(copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up the chords):

Traditional
As sung by Richard Dyer-Bennet

THE REAPER'S GHOST

Dm-------------------------------C--------------Dm-Am
Do not cross the hayfield, the hay field, the hay field;
Dm------------------------------Am
Do not cross the hay field, as sinks the blood red sun,
----Dm-----------------------------------------C--------------Dm-Am
For ghosts glide from the hay ricks, in the hay field, the hay field,
Dm-------------------------------------C---------------------Dm
Ghosts glide from the hay ricks, as sinks the blood red sun.

The farmer crossed the hay field, the hayfield, the hayfield;
The farmer crossed the hay field, as sank the blood red sun,
And he passed behind the hay ricks, in the hay field, the hay field,
And he passed behind the hay ricks, as sank the blood red sun.

The sun sank down and the moon rose, on the hay field, the hay field;
The sun sank down and the moon rose, on the dark hay field,
And a cry came from the hay ricks, the hay ricks, the hay ricks,
A cry came from the hay ricks, it was the farmer's ghost.

There is a parody in Irish of a song to a polka tune - An bhfaca tú mo Shéamaisín? "Have you seen my Séamaisín?" but think of the Scottish anglicisation in the Gaelic vocative case, Hamish. So Hamisheen, which becomes "An bhfaca tú mo hay machine?" in the parody.

Here's a song from the Digitrad - not for the kiddies though:

THE MOWER

As I went out one morning on the fourteenth of July
I met a maid and I asked her age and she gave me this reply:
"I have a little meadow, I've kept for you in store
And it's only due, I should tell you true, it never was mowed before"

She said: "Me handsome young man, if a mower that you be
I give you good employment, so come along with me"
Well it was me good employment to wander up and down
With me tearing scythe all to contrive to mow her meadow down.

Now me courage being undaunted, I stepped out on the ground
And with me tearing scythe I then did strive to mow her meadow down
I mowed from nine till dinnertime, it was far beyond my skill
I was obliged to yield and to quit the field and the grass was growing still.

Now the mower she kissed and did pretest, this fair maid bein' so young
Her little eyes they glittered like to the rising sun
She said: "I'll strive to sharpen your scythe, so set it in me hand
And then perhaps you will return again to mow me meadow land."
