Lyr Req: La Vie en Rose (Edith Piaf)

12 Oct 98 - 11:54 AM (#41333)
Subject: Lyrics wanted:French songs
From: steve

Not sure if any of you can help, but I am looking for the lyrics to "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix". It's from the Camille Saint-Saens opera _Samson et Dalila_. If possible, I'd like both the French and an English translation.

And I'm also looking for an English translation of Edith Piaf's "Mon vie en Rose".

Thanks, Steve

The following is copied from http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/3958/piaf.htm
It looks there much better than it is bound to look here.

16. La Vie En Rose (en anglais)

LA VIE EN ROSE
(Mack David)

Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
I'm in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak
Angels sing from above
Every day words
Seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose

I thought that love was just a word
They sang about in songs I heard
It took your kisses to reveal
That I was wrong, and love is real

Hold me close and hold me fast
The magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
When you kiss me, Heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
When you press me to your heart
I'm in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
And when you speak
Angels sing from above
Every day words
Seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose

Words by Mack David
Original French Lyrics by Edith Piaf
Music by Louiguy

One of my favorites! In case you wanted to know the meaning of the French words, Steve, here's my best shot, with a few places where I'm not sure. The title is especially hard to translate. "Life Rose-colored"? I'll try it less poetically as

Life in Pink

Eyes that make me lower mine
A laugh that gets lost (?) on his mouth
There's the picture without retouching
Of the man I belong to

When he takes me in his arms
[And?] he speaks quite low
I see life in pink
He says to me words of love
Words of every day
And that does something to me
He has entered my heart
A part of happiness (?)
That I know the cause of
It's him for me, me for him, for life
He said it to me, swore it to me, for life
And once I see him
Then I feel inside me
My heart beating

Nights of love to end no more (?)
A great happiness that takes its place
Annoyances, sorrows are erased
Happy, happy enough to die of

When he takes me in his arms, etc.

Might as well have the French lyrics here, too.

From paroles.net:

LA VIE EN ROSE
Paroles: Edith Piaf. Musique: Louigy, 1942

{Refrain:}
Quand il me prend dans ses bras,
Il me parle tout bas
Je vois la vie en rose,
Il me dit des mots d'amour
Des mots de tous les jours,
Et ça me fait quelque chose
Il est entré dans mon cœur,
Une part de bonheur
Dont je connais la cause,
C'est lui pour moi,
Moi pour lui dans la vie
Il me l'a dit, l'a juré
Pour la vie.
Et dès que je l'aperçois
Alors je sens en moi
Mon cœur qui bat.

Des nuits d'amour à plus finir
Un grand bonheur qui prend sa place
Des ennuis, des chagrins s'effacent
Heureux, heureux à en mourir

{au Refrain}

{Nota: variante pour le dernier couplet:}

Des nuits d'amour à en mourir
Un grand bonheur qui prend sa place
Les ennuis, les chagrins s'effacent
Heureux, heureux pour mon plaisir

Anyone who is a fan of the film Sabrina will remember that she tells Bogie that the song is about "looking at the world through rose-colored glasses." The "glasses" may be implied in a metonymic way in the French version of the song, without actually being mentioned.

From: GUEST,Renate Gloudemans

I have to do an essay about Edith Piaf where I translate five songs. Could you translate La Foule and l'hymne a l'amour for me.
thank you .

Tant qu'l'amour inond'ra mes matins
Mon amour puisque tu m'aimes

Mon amour crois-tu qu'on s'aime
Dieu réunit ceux qui s'aiment

Then YOU should translate them, not ask us to do your homework. This kind of request comes along regularly enough that many of us recognize the attempt at a homework shortcut. Some of us may resent the request, but others simply recognize that it isn't doing you any favor to do your homework for you.

Once you have sorted out the verbs and tenses and want to see if the meaning you have teased out seem acurate, then come back and ask for help. Post your translations and the originals and let people compare them. You'll get a far better sort of feedback that way.

Good luck. If you don't have a copy, I found this book very helpful for translation.

Perhaps if you went to Amazon and listened to some of the sound clips. "Hymne a l'Amour" perhaps. My problem is that I like too many of them to single out any one.

Clips of all of them are at amazon.com, so it should be possible to identify the song from this cd.

The soundtrack cd I mentioned above, to my mind has some faults, e. g., "La Vie en Rose" only in an English version (also an instrumental version, accordion).

If the song is "Il m'a vue nue", you can hear it sung here. It's an old Mistinguette's song from 1926

Un soir, je faisais une pleine eau.
Pour tout maillot, j'avais la peau,
Nul ne pouvait me voir
Que le ciel noir.
La lune soudain vint s'exhiber,
J'allais lui dire : "Ta bouche, Phoebé !"
Quand j'entendis près d'moi
Un cri d'émoi.
Y avait un homme sur un rocher,
Pas assez haut.
L'homme a fait "Ah !" et moi,
Dans l'eau,
Moi, j'ai fait "Oh !"

{Refrain}
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Sans cache-truc ni soutien-machins,
J'en ai rougi jusqu'aux vaccins.
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Je me suis, par respect humain,
Voilé la face de mes deux mains.
Mais je crois bien
Que par ce geste irréfléchi
J'ai négligé d'voiler quelques petits chichis.
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Plus que nue.

Pendant qu'il descendait d'ce rocher,
Moi, je me suis mise à nager.
J'atterris rapid'ment,
J'prends mes vêt'ments.
Mais, comme un gibier à poil, voilà
Qu'il me poursuivit, oh ! là ! là !
J'cours pour le dépister
Sans m'arrêter,
Et je pensais :
Il va me rejoindre bientôt,

{Refrain}
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Il était parti comme un dard,
Mais je n'ai pas eu de retard
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue.
Tell'ment nue,
Super-nue.

Bob Bossin wrote some great lyrics to this tune. They are French words to be sung by an anglophone. It makes no sense in French, but is hilarious if you know a little bit of French and want to laugh at yourself.

While I do sing the English "version" of La Vie En Rose for many of my audiences because they are familiar with those lyrics, I also often do my own "singable translation{" of the original French lyrics after I sing the song in French:

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks to me so low,
It's life with roses blooming.
Then he speaks to me of love
With words like "evermore,"
And that does something to me.
He has come into my heart,
Of happiness a part,
And, oh, I know the cause!
It's me for him, him for me in this life.
He's made a promise for all of our lifetimes,
And the moment he's near me,
Then all around I see
La Vie En Rose.

Or, alternatively, for the last 3 lines:

And the moment he is near
Then I can feel and hear
My beating heart.
