Senator Byrd is a fiddle player himself and is likely to care about the cultural heritage this instrument represents. For those who heard that Bill Monroe's mandolin had been sold to a Japanese investor for $2.5 million, IT WAS NOT. That was part of an elaborate April fools joke involving several stories, including bogus elections to the County Music Hall of Fame. |

According to this article at MSNBC News, Mother Maybelle's famous guitar has been purchased by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum thanks to a generous donation from philanthropist Bob McLean. I'm sure glad to see this guitar stay out of some private collection. It's too big a part of the development of country music to be shut away. - Mark |

Check out this web page -- http://www.wsmv.com/ -- and look under "featured videos" to see a news video clip of the news story. Nice clips of Earl Scruggs and Marty Stuart playing the guitar. But the highlight for me was seeing the clip of Mother Maybelle herself -- looks like it's from the late 50s or early 60s. Someone suggested her video piece might have been from an appearance on the Flatts & Scruggs TV show. Is there much video out there of the Carter Family? |

I once heard Randy Scruggs tell on the radio how Maybelle taught him to play Wildwood Flower when she was babysitting him! Maybelle was a great person as well as a great musician. George Gruhn is also in the clip. It is the first time I have seen video of Maybelle playing her guitar. To say that it made my day is an understatement... Thank you, Mr. McLain. -Greg |
