Digitrad keeps giving me an internal server error message so I hope someone will be able to help. Last night at house group we sang "Washed in the blood" and it took us till this morning to remember it was the tune for "Quartermasters store" that set me of on other songs we used to sing on the bus during sundayschool outings.

It usually started with the taunt song "The back of the bus" and wound its way forward from there through "Rothsay oh" "we've a bairnie in the hoose" "ye canny shove yer granny aff the bus" and "The world must be coming to an end"

It is the last one I have forgoten the words for. I think it like "Quartermasters stores" had very loose verses but i can only remember

I sent her for cheese
oh yes oh yes
I sent her for cheese
oh yes oh yes
I sent her for cheese
And she fell and skint her knees
oh the world must be coming to an end och aye

I think the last verse was Bread and she fell doon dead. can anyone help please.

Hmmm. Yeah, our search isn't working too well today, but I don't think you'll find it here. I found it here (click). I sure would like to know more about the song.

The world must be coming to an end

I sent her for cheese, oh then, oh then.
I sent her for cheese, oh then.
I sent her for cheese,
but she fell and broke her knees.
Oh the world must be coming to an end, oh then.

I sent her for eggs, oh then, oh then.
I sent her for eggs, oh then,
I sent her for eggs,
but she fell and broke her legs.
Oh the world must be coming to an end, oh then.

I sent her for bread, oh then, oh then.
I sent her for bread, oh then.
I sent her for bread
but she fell and broke her head:
Oh the world must be coming to an end, oh then.

I sent her for meat, oh then, oh then.
I sent her for meat, oh then.
I sent her for meat
but she fell and broke her feet.
Oh the world must be coming to an end.

This place is awesome thanks it was begining to drive me crazy.

Just remembered another verse we sang was
I sent her for honey and she ran aff wi all ma money

guess the length of the song just depended how inventive the folk on the bus were.

THANK YOU

I looked for CD recordings, and found the song will be on a Rounder CD from the Lomax Collection called Singing in the Streets: Scottish Children's Songs, due out June 22, 2004.

Tbhis PDF File has a different version, similar to Jim's.

I SENT HER FOR CHEESE

I sent her for cheese, o aye o aye
I sent her for cheese, o aye o aye
I sent her for cheese, and she fell and skint her knees
Oh, the world must be comin tae an end, o aye

I sent her for milk, o aye o aye
I sent her for milk, o aye o aye
I sent her for milk o an she fell an ripped her silk
Oh, the world must be comin tae an end, o aye

I sent her for breid, o aye o aye
I sent her for breid, o aye o aye
I sent her for breid, an she wis almost deid
Oh, the world must be comin tae an end, o aye

I sent her for buns, o aye o aye
I sent her for buns, o aye o aye
I sent her for buns, an she bumped intae some nuns
Oh, the world must be comin tae an end, o aye

I sent her for onions, o aye o aye
I sent her for onions o aye o aye
I sent her for onions, an she stood on someone's bunions
Oh, the world must be comin tae an end, o aye

(Identified as "new version," so I don't know how traditional the lyrics are.)

I have somewhere an EP of street songs recorded by Hall and McGrgeor sometime in the early 60's with this on it.

The Singing Kettle (Cilla Fisher and Artie Tresize or possibly Trezise - could be Tree-size - I should look it up -but I can't be bothered) have also recorded it. It's on one of their earlier cassettes.

Yeah .. go to www.singingkettle.com/acatalog

it's on "The Singing Kettle World Tour Cassette "

It's on the brand new Lomax disc of 1951 recordings of Scottish Children's Songs, on Rounder, with more of a story to it. The kids who sing it omit the first verse
"I merrit me a wife, she's the plague o ma life" that Ritchie prints in his book, but they do sing
"Ah bought her a coffin, an she fell through the bottom,
Ah buried her in dirt and she jumped oot her shirt."
Plus I and other Scots songwriters in schools have made something like a hundred new verses with kids.
For example:
"We sent her for toothpaste, she fell over a loose lace.
She tried to cross the road and turned into a toad.
We sent her for a biscuit but she didny want tae risk it.
We sent her for a bun and she turned intae a nun.
We sent her for spaghetti and she came back wi a Yeti."
There are over 70 songs etc on the album, plus interviews with Ritchie, MacColl and Henderson, all in 1951. It was a serious pleasure top make it.

THE WORLD MUST BE COMING TO AN END
As recorded by Christina Stewart on "Bairn's Kist" (2011)

1. They sent me for bread, oh aye, oh aye.
They sent me for bread, oh aye, oh aye.
They sent me for bread.
I fell and bumped my head
.
The world must be coming to an end, an end, an end.
The world must be coming to an end.

2. … pies … I fell and bumped my eyes.

3. … sweets … I fell and bumped my feet.

4. … eggs … I fell and bumped my legs.

5. … cheese … I fell and bumped my knees.

6. … toast … I turned into a ghost.

Heard this recently and thought it was a fun song......but I think I heard the adult version!

I sent her for whisky and she came back frisky......
I sent her for rum and she came back numb......
I sent her for brandy and she wasn't very handy......

is as much as I can remember, I'm pretty sure gin was in it too.
Can't remember the performer, but the community radio station we were listening to was playing a program of Irish/Scottish singalong songs at the time, and it's 700 kms away from me anyway.
