17 Jun 04 - 05:08 PM (#1209445) Subject: Lyr Req: The world must be coming to an end From: Megan L Digitrad keeps giving me an internal server error message so I hope someone will be able to help. Last night at house group we sang "Washed in the blood" and it took us till this morning to remember it was the tune for "Quartermasters store" that set me of on other songs we used to sing on the bus during sundayschool outings. It usually started with the taunt song "The back of the bus" and wound its way forward from there through "Rothsay oh" "we've a bairnie in the hoose" "ye canny shove yer granny aff the bus" and "The world must be coming to an end" It is the last one I have forgoten the words for. I think it like "Quartermasters stores" had very loose verses but i can only remember I sent her for cheese oh yes oh yes I sent her for cheese oh yes oh yes I sent her for cheese And she fell and skint her knees oh the world must be coming to an end och aye I think the last verse was Bread and she fell doon dead. can anyone help please. |

I have somewhere an EP of street songs recorded by Hall and McGrgeor sometime in the early 60's with this on it. The Singing Kettle (Cilla Fisher and Artie Tresize or possibly Trezise - could be Tree-size - I should look it up -but I can't be bothered) have also recorded it. The kids who sing it omit the first verse "I merrit me a wife, she's the plague o ma life" that Ritchie prints in his book, but they do sing "Ah bought her a coffin, an she fell through the bottom, Ah buried her in dirt and she jumped oot her shirt." Plus I and other Scots songwriters in schools have made something like a hundred new verses with kids. For example: "We sent her for toothpaste, she fell over a loose lace. She tried to cross the road and turned into a toad. We sent her for a biscuit but she didny want tae risk it. We sent her for a bun and she turned intae a nun. We sent her for spaghetti and she came back wi a Yeti." There are over 70 songs etc on the album, plus interviews with Ritchie, MacColl and Henderson, all in 1951. It was a serious pleasure top make it. |

I sent her for brandy and she wasn't very handy...... is as much as I can remember, I'm pretty sure gin was in it too. Can't remember the performer, but the community radio station we were listening to was playing a program of Irish/Scottish singalong songs at the time, and it's 700 kms away from me anyway. |
